Has anyone noticed that the last thing Buffy The Vampire Slayer ever says in the Buffyverse is 'Spike'. That just makes me think that Joss wants us to know that he means more to her than we were led to think. And I also like that we finally see the FULL FACE of the mutant enemy guy on the last ep, that made me smile through my tears.

Buffy clearly was in love with Spike, she didn't just love him, she was in love with him.

Girls don't sleep in the same bed as their male friends...
Or if you do, I'll be your friend, just don't worry about the wandering hands, I'm a restless sleeper! 😉

you made me smile :)
finally! someone else noticed this!! i've been saying this since the show ended!!
i love the fact that Buffy's last word was Spike, it def means that her last words to himwere true...she WAS in love with Spike.

I love the way you think Lyri!

I do actually. It doesnt mean anything. But thats beside the point. When Buffy slept in the same bed as Spike that night, it did mean something. More than friends. But she still wasnt in love with him. She needed comforting. He comforted her. End of.

I've always said there was love between them
It isnt the same as whats built between Buffy/Angel, but it is love.
Its plain to see in their relationship from way back in the beginning of season 7 when he is on the cross. When she realises how far he went for her. This, to me, was a hark back to Intervention, when Spike protected Dawn at any cost, she realised there that he was not an ordinary Vampire, this helped her view him differently. Infact until they actually kiss in OMWF there is genuinely something true boiling then BAM the writers turned it into a lurid sexual affair, one that was great in showing how Buffy was dealing, but was totally not in the character of Spikes progression, de-evolving him to season 2/3 Spike.
I feel that Spike didnt say the 'no you don't' part because he believed it, i think he said it because he was trying to, in his way, help Buffy not feel too sad at his loss, but allow her to see his sacrifice as a good thing....

i like that
Thank you! 🙂

I noticed the night of the show... that her last words were: "I love you" to Spike and "Spike" to the gang. I mean, what more do you need? 🙂

I think it was to definitely point you in the direction of at least thinking that Buffy did truly care about Spike and he was a huge part of her life. If anything, just let yourself believe that!

And then, force it into your brain that they are meant for each other.... .🙂

OH! i love it!! exactly how i think!
That's not too surprising, people may have not seen it but there was definitely chemistry between Buffy and Spike. Alot of Spuffy romance, I tell ya.

I wasn't really sure which couple had more chemistry though, Spuffy or Bangel? I then came out to figure the theory that it was really Bangel...I'm not so sure anymore though. I always thought Bangel had a bond like none other and they had something...something that was beautiful.

I still think that but I don't discard Spuffy that much anymore, I've always preferred Spuffy over Bangel but I just wasn't sure if it was the right couple but now I know it is!

They're meant to be and Buffy did love Spike a bunch, she just wasn't good at showing her true emotions, as stated by many in season 6.

You are officially invited over!
But thats beside the point. When Buffy slept in the same bed as Spike that night, it did mean something. More than friends.

What the mcgurgles is "more than friends"??
But she still wasnt in love with him. She needed comforting. He comforted her. End of.

End of? No, never, you undercover Bangel! I shall expose you all! Invite revoked!!

I'm not sure how anybody could possibly say Buffy wasn't in love with Spike.

Chosen:
BUFFY
Angel said the amulet was meant to be worn by a
champion.
Spike turns away with a sigh but Buffy steps forward and places the
medallion in his hand.
SPIKE
(smiles)
Been called a lot of things in my time.
BUFFY
Faith still has my room"¦
SPIKE
Well, you're not staying here! You can't buy me off with
shiny beads and sweet talk. You've got Angel-breath. I'm
not going to just let you whack me back and forth like a
rubber ball. I got my pride, you know.
BUFFY
I understand.
She turns to go but Spike runs around in front of her, blocking her way.
SPIKE
Clearly you don't, 'cause the whole "having my pride"
thing was just a smokescreen.
BUFFY
(relieved)
Oh, thank god.
SPIKE
I don't know what I would have done if you'd gone up
those stairs.
Buffy smiles and caresses his cheek with her hand.

I actually saw the medallion as almost symbolic of Buffy's love. She was in love with Angel, she gave the medallion to Spike her new love.

Notice the end of the scene when she caresses Spike's cheek, and gazes into his eyes........ CLEARLY, just good friends!

For me, the thing that truly seals the deal is trust. Buffy trusts Spike, more than she ever trusted Riley or Angel, and trust is so important to Buffy. It's the reason she tells Spike she can't love him in season6. Season 7, she trusts Spike more than anybody. He is her knight, her protector, her pillar of strength, and she likewise for him.

When Buffy tells Spike she loves him, it's not because he needs to hear it, it's because she needs to say it. She has to admit vocally, what she was afraid to, with sharing her power with the other potentials, she loses that superiority complex that held her back from opening up.

Lyri
Lyri
i never thought i'd actually agree with you on any subject...but what you said makes perfect sense and i agree completely!
What the mcgurgles is "more than friends"??
You dont know? It means exactly what it says. Theyre more than friends but not in love. It is possible you know. Doesnt have to be one extreme or the other 😛

End of? No, never, you undercover Bangel! I shall expose you all! Invite revoked!!

I actually hate Bangel 🙂

I'm not sure how anybody could possibly say Buffy wasn't in love with Spike.
The same way I can say Cordy wasnt in love with Doyle. Doesnt mean there wouldnt ever be love there. Just that there wasnt at that point. She cared for him a great deal, but didnt love him. Do you think she'd let Angel sacrifice himself? No, she'd do it herself to save him. But she let Spike.

Notice the end of the scene when she caresses Spike's cheek, and gazes into his eyes........ CLEARLY, just good friends!
Like I said, more than friends but doesnt mean love.

It takes more than trust to love someone.

When Buffy tells Spike she loves him, it's not because he needs to hear it, it's because she needs to say it. She has to admit vocally, what she was afraid to, with sharing her power with the other potentials, she loses that superiority complex that held her back from opening up.
Not necessarily. Maybe by saying it she was trying it out to see if she really felt that way or not. Maybe she was just saying it for Spikes sake. Really, we're never gonna know.

Do you think she'd let Angel sacrifice himself? No, she'd do it herself to save him. But she let Spike.

...

I can't even respond to that sensibly. Just silly.

It takes more than trust to love someone.

Yeah, and? Buffy and Spike have much more going for them than trust. Trust is what they didn't have, and so desperately needed.

Not necessarily. Maybe by saying it she was trying it out to see if she really felt that way or not. Maybe she was just saying it for Spikes sake. Really, we're never gonna know.

She was saying it to see if she felt that way?? Yeah, good one. Find out how it sounds to say "I love you", to a person just before they die.

There is NO way in hell she is saying it for Spike's sake. Honestly, I wonder sometimes if I was the only person that actually watched the show. Buffy(woman) telling Spike(man) what he wants to hear, and not because its true, COMPLETELY mocks the entire show. It belittles the character of Buffy, the wall she builds up around herself throughout the series, and how she breaks that wall.

Buffy was in love with Spike.

that's what i'm saying all the time to people! it gotta mean something. glad someone else sees that!

Fiver:
You are being ridiculous. Youre the only person who watched the show properly? So youre saying basically that other people arent allowed to have their own interpretations of what happened? Im saying, we'll never know and youre trying to force your interpretation on us. Fair enough if thats your opininon but dont try to tell me thats definately what happened, cos we dont actually know.

But Wolf he is right.
Why would the show thats about female empowerment in its purest form end with the lead character totally about face, disregard everything she stands for and say 'I Love You' to a guy who, alot of people believe, isn't worth it.
Its not because she wants him to die happy, its because she feels it.
She even tells Angel that Spike is in her heart.
Love comes in many different varieties, stages and for all intent and purpose, from the way they acted with each other, specifically from 'Lies My Parents Told Me', you can see this level of respect, understanding, trust and love building between them stronger.
I honestly don't know where your interpretation is coming from, because her words were not out of the blue.
BUFFY
(quietly) I don't wanna be the one.

SPIKE
I don't wanna be this good looking and athletic. We all have crosses to bear. (Buffy chuckles) You get some rest now. I'll check in before first light. You can decide how you want... (walks toward the door)

BUFFY
Spike? (he turns to face her) Could you...stay here?

SPIKE
Sure. (looks at a chair) That diabolical old torture device, the comfy chair. (takes off his coat) It'll do me fine.

BUFFY
No, I mean...here. (touches the bed beside her) Will you just hold me?

Spike sits on the bed beside Buffy and puts his arm around her. She curls up on him, cuddling up to his chest as he puts his arm around her shoulder, holding her head with his hand.

This Scene shows that she wants him, not because he is sexy cool Vampire, but because she knows she has a connection with him, she wants him to be there.

The next scene

SPIKE
Honey, you're home.

BUFFY
Yeah.

SPIKE
(sighs) And you did it. Fulfilled your mission. Found the Holy Grail. Or the Holy Hand Grenade, or whatever the hell that is.

BUFFY
Right now we're going with scythe. You like?

SPIKE
Well, pointy and wooden is not exactly the look I wanna know better, but it does have flair. Can see why a girl would ditch a fella for one of these.

BUFFY
I'm sorry about that. (walks away)

Cut to:

33 INT. KITCHEN AT BUFFY'S HOUSE - NIGHT
As Buffy walks toward the kitchen, Spike follows her.

SPIKE
It doesn't matter. You're back in the bosom. All's forgiven. And, uh, (stands in front of Buffy, looking at her) last night...was just a glitch. A bit of cold comfort from the cellar dweller. Let's don't make a thing out of it. (breathes nervously)

BUFFY
Great. I have work to do.

SPIKE
Oh, yeah. Another solo mission, of course.

BUFFY
Yeah, it is.

SPIKE
That's fine. You don't have to get shirty about it.

BUFFY
I'm not shirty. And what is shirty? That's not even a word.

SPIKE
All right. All right. Big secret mission. It's fine.

BUFFY
It's not a secret. Well, I mean, it is, but that's the point of the mission. Find out the secret. This thing was forged by"” I don't even know. I mean, something about... a tomb on unconsecrated ground. That's what I have to do. I need to find out what this is and why I have it.

SPIKE
And that's the thing the preacher man was so anxious to keep out of your mitts?

BUFFY
That it is.

SPIKE
Well, maybe I'll swing by the vineyard when you go, make sure he's sitting tight.

BUFFY
Great.

SPIKE
OK. (turns to leave)

BUFFY
(walks after him) You're a dope.

SPIKE
I'm a what?

BUFFY
You're a dope. And a bonehead. And you're shirty.

SPIKE
Have you gone completely carrot-top?

BUFFY
Do you see this? (holds up the scythe) This may actually help me fight my war. This might be the key to everything. And the reason I'm holding it is because of you. Because of the strength that you gave me last night. Look, I am tired of defensiveness and weird, mixed signals. You know, I have Faith for that. Let's just get to the truth here, OK? I don't know how you felt about last night, but I will not"”

SPIKE
(breathes in, looks away) Terrified.

BUFFY
Of what?

SPIKE
(lets out a slow sigh) Last night was... (looks up) God, I'm such a jerk. I can't do this.

BUFFY
Spike...

SPIKE
It was the best night of my life. If you poke fun at me, you bloody well better use that, 'cause I couldn't bear it. It may not mean that much to you, but"”

BUFFY
I just told you it did.

SPIKE
(sighs) Yeah...I hear you say it, but... I've lived for soddin' ever, Buffy. I've done everything. Done things with you I can't spell, but... I've never... been close... to anyone. Least of all, you. 'Til last night. All I did was... (smiles) hold you, watch you sleep. And it was the best night of my life. So, yeah... I'm... terrified.

BUFFY
You don't have to be.

SPIKE
(looks at her) Were you there with me?

BUFFY
(looks straight at him) I was.

SPIKE
What does that mean?

BUFFY
I don't know. Does it have to mean something?

SPIKE
No. (looks away) Not right now.

BUFFY
Maybe when...

SPIKE
No. (throws up his hand) Let's just leave it.

BUFFY
OK.

SPIKE
(sighs) We'll go be heroes. (walks out the door)

Cut to:

Here, you have to read between the lines here, because the word is not actually said, but this is them saying that the night was 'love' induced.

ANGEL
Is it Spike? (Buffy stops walking, turns to face Angel) You're not telling me something. And his scent, I remember it pretty well.

BUFFY
You vampires. Did anybody ever tell you the whole smelling people thing's a little gross? (walks away)

ANGEL
(follows) Is he your boyfriend?

BUFFY
Is that your business?

ANGEL
You in love with him? OK, maybe I'm outta line, but this is kind of a curve ball for me. I mean, we are talking about Spike here.

BUFFY
It's different. He's different. He has a soul now.

ANGEL
(stops) Oh. (looks up) Well.

BUFFY
What?

ANGEL
That's great. (mumbling to himself) Everyone's got a soul now.

BUFFY
He'll make a difference.

ANGEL
(mumbling) You know, I started it. The whole having a soul. Before it was all the cool new thing.

BUFFY
Oh, my God. Are you 12?

ANGEL
I'm getting the brush off for Captain Peroxide. It doesn't necessarily bring out the champion in me.

BUFFY
You're not getting the brush off. Are you just gonna come here and go all Dawson on me every time I have a boyfriend?

ANGEL
Aha! (points) Boyfriend!

BUFFY
He's not. But...he is in my heart.

ANGEL
That'll end well. (walks away, leans on a tombstone)

BUFFY
What was the highlight of our relationship? When you broke up with me or when I killed you? I'm well aware of my stellar history with guys... (sighs, leans beside Angel) And, no, I don't see fat grandchildren in the offing with Spike, but I don't think that really matters right now. (chuckles) You know, in the midst of all this insanity, a couple things are actually starting to make sense. And the guy thing"” (sighs) I always feared there was something wrong with me, you know, because I couldn't make it work. But maybe I'm not supposed to

This is Buffy acknowledging to the guy that not only is her 'true love' but also Spikes worst enemy, that Spike is not just important to the fight, but that he is important to her, he is in her heart.

SPIKE
Gotta move, lamb. I think it's fair to say school's out for bloody summer.

BUFFY
(worried) Spike!

SPIKE
I mean it! I gotta do this. (holds out his hand to stop her)

Buffy laces her fingers through Spike's, and they burst into flame together.

BUFFY
(softly, looks into his eyes) I love you.

SPIKE
No, you don't. But thanks for saying it. (another earthquake; Buffy lets go of his hand) Now go! (Buffy runs up the stairs) I wanna see how it ends.
This here, it has the actual words, finally. Buffy says it. Yes, granted Spike is about to die, but there is no reason for Buffy to lie to him, not after we have seen there relationship. She simply wishes to tell him, because she believes she never will if she doesnt now.

As for the 'No, you don't' line, this isn't because he doesnt believe her, this is because he doesnt want her to, he doesnt want her to be in pain at his death, so instead gives her an easier option of telling herself she only said it because of the situation......though i actually believe this line was written in for us to believe he wouldnt go after her in Angel, make that believeable....which is so annoying.

So, Wolf, not suggesting you havent watched the show at all, but could you give your 'interpretation' of their relationship with the text from the show season 7 only?

I totally understand where you are coming from (and am very glad you dont feel the need to insult my intelligence while you prove it) but that doesnt mean I have to agree. Everything you said makes sense. But as far as Im concerned, just because Spike is in her heart, doesnt mean shes in love with him. I believe she loves him, just isnt in love with him. I also believe she probably would have been in love with him if they had longer together.
I dont have anything at the moment to prove this because its early and I cant be bothered going looking for proof. And also because, like I said, this is my interpretation, not necessarily how it definately was.
You believe they were in love,I dont. Our opinions. And until Joss says otherwise, this is how its going to be.

(and am very glad you dont feel the need to insult my intelligence while you prove it)

Fiver:
You are being ridiculous.
Thanks, hypocrite.

Youre the only person who watched the show properly?

No.
So youre saying basically that other people arent allowed to have their own interpretations of what happened?
Basically? Yes.
Im saying, we'll never know and youre trying to force your interpretation on us.
When Buffy slept in the same bed as Spike that night, it did mean something. More than friends. But she still wasnt in love with him. She needed comforting. He comforted her. End of.
Ah, so you're a liar as well as a hypocrite. Nice.

Fair enough if thats your opininon but dont try to tell me thats definately what happened, cos we dont actually know.

Firstly, anything I post is obviously MY opinion, why would I post someone else's opinion.
Secondly, I'll tell you whatever I want, if you don't like it, don't read it.

Thirdly, how can we not know what was shown on screen?

Understand, there are things that are open to interpretation, and things that are misinterpreted.

If you don't think Buffy was in love with Spike, then A) You are unintentionly misinterpreting the show. B) You are deliberately misinterpreting the show. c) You're not too bright.

I'm not going to bother taking the time explaining why Buffy was in love with Spike, because honestly, I don't think you'll get it. Well, I know now you definitely wont get it. You think I was questioning your intelligence in my last post, I wasn't. I don't think you have 'intelligence' for me to question.

You can erroneously think that Buffy wasn't in love with Spike all you want. I actually know she was, because I watched the show, and I understood the important beats, starting all the way back in season 6 with 'Seeing Red'.

Oh, and for the record, in one of your previous posts, you said Buffy wanted comfort that night. Buffy and Spike shared the same bed for at least three nights in a row.

Also note that Buffy is the one who approached Spike about their relationship, not the other way around. In 'End of Days' she tries to tell Spike she is in love with him. When he has a moment of self-doubt, and flees, watch Buffy's face. Her expression says it all.
