Leigh Conrad, March 1941 - January 1942

Part One

May 1941
Audrey Wilson walked down an empty alleyway. She knew it shouldn't be this quiet, it never was this quiet. Cambridge wasn't the busiest city in Massachusetts, but it wasn't the slowest either. There always was something going on. Someone was always on the street, be it prostitutes, drug dealers, or the homeless.

She roamed along the dirty alley and finally reached the main road. She still saw no one as she glanced to her right and her left. She glanced at her watch. 2:28 am. She knew she should be inside, she knew she should be somewhere safe, but she had no where to go.

She made her way up the street, heading to the park. Maybe she'd sleep in the baseball team's dugout, they were covered, and if the thunder in the distance was any indication, rain was on it's way.

She noticed the street light bouncing of metal on the ground and she bent down to pick it up. It was a small gold heart pendent. Audrey placed it in her pocket and stood back to size. She was met with a pair of glowing yellow eyes. She gasped and took a step back. His face was horribly disfigured and he was smiling... at her. It wasn't a friendly smile either.

"Hey, cutie." he said and Audrey caught a glance at his teeth.

"Wh-what are you?" she stuttered, backing up.

He glided forward, following her. Audrey was soon pressed up again the grimy wall of a nearby building. Her breath caught in her throat as she felt the cold wall through her shirt.

"What do I look like? Cause's that's what I am." he responded, reaching for her face. His hand grazed her cheek and ran his fingers through her strawberry blonde hair.

Audrey whimpered and closed her eyes. She felf his hand travel down her arm and back up. She shivered, his hands were so cold. His hand stopped at her neck and he lightly traced circles there.

Suddenly, he yelled and his hand was no longer on Audrey's neck.

Audrey opened her eyes, to find a pair of blue ones staring back.

The girl in front of Audrey had a piece of wood in her hand and she had it raised in the air. Audrey's eyes widened as she stared at it.

"Sorry," the blue eyed girl smiled as she lowered the stake.

"What d-did you do?" Audrey asked breathlessly.

"My job...What's your name kid? You look barely sixteen."

"My name's Audrey, Audrey Wilson and fourteen actually."

"What are you doing out here at the time of night? It's obviously not safe."

"Just roaming...what's your name?"

"Oh! Sorry, it's..."

She was cut off by an older man. "Leigh!" The man ran up to the duo.

"That's my name, what he said." Leigh smiled.

The man doubled over, panting.

"No worries, Chris. It's taken care of." Leigh reassured.

"Ah! Good then!" Chris sat down.

Audrey looked around, unsure of what to do. She noticed Leigh's beautiful dress. It was adorned with small beads and a dark shade of red.

"What was that thing? It looked like a man, but it wasn't." Audrey glanced at Leigh.

Leigh was trying to push back the curls that fell out of her bun. "Oh, ummm...just a guy...a guy that..."

"It was a vampire wasn't it?" Audrey cut her off.

Chris sighed and stood up. "Yeah."

Leigh's eyes widened. "Chris! You're a Watcher aren't you supposed to be all secretive. Keeping the cat in the bag and all that."

Audrey raised her eyebrow. "What's a Watcher?"

Chris smirked at Leigh. "That one was you."

Audrey decided to change the subject. "What's a Fifth Avenue girl like you doing down here?"

Leigh smiled sadly. "I wish...I actually work around the corner."

"What building?"

"On the corner."

"Oh." Audrey looked down. "Sorry."

"Nothing to be sorry about...let's walk you home."

Chris stood up. "Yes, lets."

"I-I can't." Audrey sighed.

Leigh looked confused. "Why not? Your parents must be worried."

"I don't have a home. My parents died when I was younger." Audrey refused to look at either of them.

Leigh and Chris looked at each other and immediately Chris knew what Leigh wanted to do. He slowly nodded.

"Well," Leigh started. "My apartment's down the street. You could come with me."

"Really?" Audrey looked up.

"Sure."

*~*~*~*~*

As soon as they got to Leigh's apartment, Chris went into a back room and shut the door, assuming that Leigh might want to talk to the girl.

"Hungry?" Leigh asked.

"Starving." Audrey said honestly.

"Turkey or ham sandwich?"

"Turkey."

Leigh started making the sandwiches. Audrey glanced around the apartment, it was a nice apartment, very spacious. Audrey was surprised, if Leigh was only getting money from the street, how could she afford it?

"Um, are-" Audrey faltered. "Are you and that Chris guy together?"

Leigh giggled to herself. "No, we're friends."

"He's kinda cute." Smirked Audrey.

"Yeah, but he's always togged to the bricks and gammin' around."

"He doesn't seem like it."

"You just met him."

"How old are you?" Audrey asked out of curiosity.

"Nineteen."

"And Chris?"

"Twenty-five."

"How did you meet him?"

"You ask a lot of questions."

Audrey smiled. "So I've been told. I'm just curious."

Audrey's smiled faltered. "But I still want to know about the vampire and I want to know what a Watcher is."

Leigh sighed and walked into the living room. As she sat, she handed Audrey her sandwich.

Audrey gratefully took it. "Did you know about vampires? I mean, you were the only one out tonight, there had to be a reason."

"I told you. My job."

"You also said that it was around the corner. How did you know I was back there? I didn't scream."

"I could feel it."

"How'd you know how to kill it?"

Leigh sighed. "If I tell you something, do you swear to keep it to yourself?"

"Yeah, of course."

"I'm trusting you."

"You can trust me, I swear."

"Alright." Leigh took a deep breath. "Here we go. I'm a Vampire Slayer. I was chosen to rid the world of vampires. It's my job. I can feel vampires when they are near. Chris is my Watcher. They...watch, I guess. I'm really not quite sure about his job, but he watches over me and guides me."

"No way!"

"Yeah."

"How long have you been doing this?"

"Almost two months. The deal with this Slayer thing, is when one dies, another's called."

"So, someone had to die for you to become this?"

"Yes."

"Wow."

"Yeah, now if Chris finds out, I'm in trouble."

"Find out what?"

Leigh looked back at Chris, who was standing in the doorway. She smiled innocently, "Nothing."

"What did you..." He trailed off and thought. "No! You didn't!"

"She's not gonna tell anyone!" Leigh defended.

"How do you know?! And that's not the point! You knew the rules!"

Leigh sighed. "I know, but how was I gonna explain that stuff? She already knew about that guy being a vamp!"

Chris sighed and sat on the couch. "I'm too young for this."

Leigh smiled. "Yes, but it's not my fault your dad is a head guy in the Watcher's Council. He made you do it, not me."

Chris looked at Audrey. "Just...don't tell anybody, okay?"

Audrey looked up at Chris, down to the floor, and back up to Chris. "I don't have anybody I could tell." she said honestly.

PART TWO

The next day, Leigh and Audrey were walking down the street, walking into various clothing stores.

"Wow, look at that! It's so beautiful!" Audrey exclaimed.

"Yeah it is, you want it?"

"Oh I couldn't! You got me so much already."

"Oh, come on! Are you really gonna deny clothes?"

Audrey smiled shyly and shook her head.

"Okay. I'll go pay for it, you look around."

"Alright."

Audrey watched her walk away and sighed. She couldn't believe this was happening. Not only did a complete stranger take her in and treated her like an adult, but this girl was a superhero! That's how Audrey saw it, at least. She went out every night saving helpless victims, like Audrey had been and now she was buying clothes for her and letting her stay at her apartment. Leigh was turning into the sister Audrey never had, but always wanted.

*~*~*~*~*

Leigh and Chris watched as Audrey spun in her new dress.

Leigh turned to Chris, "So what do you think?"

"It's nice. Not really suitable for tonight's activities, though."

"I know that! It's for tomorrow."

"What's tomorrow?"

"We're going out! You, me, and Audrey, we're indulging and going to the most expensive restaurant that we can afford. I think we deserve it."

He smiled. "I think you do, too."

She smiled back. Audrey glanced at Leigh and then Chris. "Well, I'm going to go change so we can get going."

Leigh glanced up at her. "Okay."

*~*~*~*~*

"What was up with the oogle eyes earlier?" Audrey asked as her and Leigh were walking around the park patrolling.

Leigh glanced behind her and when she didn't see Chris, she answered, "There were no oogle eyes."

"You were practically drooling."

"I don't drool or oogle!"

"Mmm hmm." Audrey smiled as she answered.

"Don't look all smug. Nothing's going on! What do you know, you're fourteen!"

"First sign on a crush, denial."

"Mouth shut please. Trying to do my job here!"

Audrey smiled and looked around the park. Her eyes roamed across the tree line and then something moved. "What was that?"

"What was what?"

"I saw something over there." She pointed to the spot.

"You stay here, I'll check it out."

"You sure?"

"Yeah, go get Chris, though. Don't want you to be yourself."

"I can handle myself."

"Sure you can." Leigh responded sarcastically.

Audrey sighed and walked back to find Chris. He was patrolling on the other side of the park. The park wasn't that big, so she was there in no time. She spotted him concentrating as he approached the forrest line.

"Hey Chris!"

He turned quickly, hands raised in a battle stance. He then just as quickly lowered his hands when he saw who it was. "Don't do that!"

Audrey smiled. "Okay, I won't do it again. Umm, Leigh needs you. Possible evil."

He nodded and followed her as they walked back to the spot where Leigh was. Correction, where she used to be.

"Leigh?" Chris called.

No answer. "Leigh?" He tried again a little louder.

"Shh!" Came the answer from the trees as Leigh walked out. "There's a nest. We gotta run to the club and get some more weapons."

*~*~*~*~*
Audrey looked at the dancers on the floor with wonder. "How do they bend like that? Wouldn't they break a hip or something?"

Chris turned a slight shade of red. "No need to look at that."

Leigh just smiled.

"Can you do that?" Audrey asked.

"Yeah, actually. But I'm mostly outside. Rarely am I ever in here dancing...I don't wanna break a hip." Leigh smirked and walked back into the building. "It's back here."

They reached the back and entered a small room. Their were costumes and dresses thrown everywhere. Leigh went to the corner and pulled a dresser away from the wall. A cubby hole was in the wall and she put her hand inside. She pulled out a small crossbow and some stakes.

She stood up and handed Chris a stake and turned to Audrey. "Ever use a crossbow?"

"No. Never thought I'd have to."

*~*~*~*~*
The three of them walked through the forest, Leigh and Chris ready for anything and Audrey clutching her crossbow.

They could hear the vamps talking and quickly made their way to them. Audrey followed and cringed as she stepped on a small branch and made a large cracking noise.

"What was that?" asked one of the vamps.

Leigh motioned for them to hide behind the trees and as one of the vamps walked past them, Leigh attacked. Followed by Chris and Audrey who shakingly raised her crossbow.

As Leigh and Chris fought, Audrey slowly backed up against a tree, scared out of her mind.

Leigh was surprised when the vamp she attacked was giving her trouble. he was stronger than he looked. He quickly gained the upper hand but just as fast, Leigh got it back. Leigh got knocked into a tree and she took the time to look around. She counted quickly. 5. 5 vampires that were slowly approaching her. She turned back to her sparring partner and gave it all she had. He quickly defended and then turned her around, arms behind her back. She saw the 5 vamps up close. There was no way out of this. Not with Chris being the only person able to help her.

"Run!" she screamed. Audrey turned to her with tears in her eyes. "Go, Audrey! Get outta here!"

Chris looked up and his eyes grew wide at what he saw. Leigh was struggling to get loose, but she looked up at him and said, "Go! Get her out of here, make sure she's safe."

Chris was about to argue but he was cut off by a vampire attacking. He quickly dodged the punch and he heard. "Do this for me, Chris."

He quickly turned and ran to Audrey. "Come on! We're headed back to the house." He looked back. "Hurry!"

*~*~*~*~*
About four hours later, Audrey and Chris were sitting in Leigh's apartment.

Chris looked up at her. "It's been awhile. I guess we have to fear--"

"Don't say it." Audrey spit out. "She'll come back. She has to."

Chris sighed. "At least get some rest."

"No."

"You're not the only one who's effected by this you know!" He responded angrily. "You don't think I wish she would walk through that door right now?! She meant more to me than you'll ever know!"

She looked up. "Were you in love with her?"

"Of course I loved her..."

"No. Where you in love with her?"

He looked down and whispered. "Yes."

*~*~*~*~*
An hour later, Chris was in his room. After he confessed his love for his Slayer to Audrey, he retreated to his bedroom in silence.

Audrey was on the couch, looking up at the ceiling. Then there was a knock at the door.

Audrey was up in a flash. She unlocked the door and swung it open to find a bruised and bleeding Leigh. "Oh my god, what happened? Get in here, we gotta clean you up!"

Leigh stumbled in and sat in the nearest chair. Audrey rushed to get some towels and some disinfectant.

Chris came out, hearing the commotion and gasped when he saw her. He quickly ran to her and gave her a hug.

"Ow, Chris, covered in wounds here."

He pulled back quickly. "Oh, sorry."

She smiled. "It's okay."

He brushed his hand over a cut on her forehead. "That's pretty bad. Let me help." He turned to the sink and turned on the water. He reached for a towel and put it under the running water. He turned back, only to find Leigh in his way. She was two inches from his face and she had a smile on her lips.

"Did I ever thank you for watching me?"

"Um..."

"Cause, you know I should...What do you want? Anything. It'll be yours."

"Leigh--"

"Even immortality."

He closed his eyes, tears forming. "I'm sorry."

She leaned in, heading for his neck. He closed his eyes, waiting, but the response was Leigh gasping. He opened his eyes just in time to see her explode into dust. As the dust cleared, he saw Audrey, holding the crossbow.

Never thought I'd have to.
