Destructo Girl
you can't wait to fall
Leigh Conrad, March 1941 - January 1942
Part One
May 1941
Audrey Wilson walked down an empty alleyway. She knew it shouldn't be this quiet, it never was this quiet. Cambridge wasn't the busiest city in Massachusetts, but it wasn't the slowest either. There always was something going on. Someone was always on the street, be it prostitutes, drug dealers, or the homeless.
She roamed along the dirty alley and finally reached the main road. She still saw no one as she glanced to her right and her left. She glanced at her watch. 2:28 am. She knew she should be inside, she knew she should be somewhere safe, but she had no where to go.
She made her way up the street, heading to the park. Maybe she'd sleep in the baseball team's dugout, they were covered, and if the thunder in the distance was any indication, rain was on it's way.
She noticed the street light bouncing of metal on the ground and she bent down to pick it up. It was a small gold heart pendent. Audrey placed it in her pocket and stood back to size. She was met with a pair of glowing yellow eyes. She gasped and took a step back. His face was horribly disfigured and he was smiling... at her. It wasn't a friendly smile either.
"Hey, cutie." he said and Audrey caught a glance at his teeth.
"Wh-what are you?" she stuttered, backing up.
He glided forward, following her. Audrey was soon pressed up again the grimy wall of a nearby building. Her breath caught in her throat as she felt the cold wall through her shirt.
"What do I look like? Cause's that's what I am." he responded, reaching for her face. His hand grazed her cheek and ran his fingers through her strawberry blonde hair.
Audrey whimpered and closed her eyes. She felf his hand travel down her arm and back up. She shivered, his hands were so cold. His hand stopped at her neck and he lightly traced circles there.
Suddenly, he yelled and his hand was no longer on Audrey's neck.
Audrey opened her eyes, to find a pair of blue ones staring back.
The girl in front of Audrey had a piece of wood in her hand and she had it raised in the air. Audrey's eyes widened as she stared at it.
"Sorry," the blue eyed girl smiled as she lowered the stake.
"What d-did you do?" Audrey asked breathlessly.
"My job...What's your name kid? You look barely sixteen."
"My name's Audrey, Audrey Wilson and fourteen actually."
"What are you doing out here at the time of night? It's obviously not safe."
"Just roaming...what's your name?"
"Oh! Sorry, it's..."
She was cut off by an older man. "Leigh!" The man ran up to the duo.
"That's my name, what he said." Leigh smiled.
The man doubled over, panting.
"No worries, Chris. It's taken care of." Leigh reassured.
"Ah! Good then!" Chris sat down.
Audrey looked around, unsure of what to do. She noticed Leigh's beautiful dress. It was adorned with small beads and a dark shade of red.
"What was that thing? It looked like a man, but it wasn't." Audrey glanced at Leigh.
Leigh was trying to push back the curls that fell out of her bun. "Oh, ummm...just a guy...a guy that..."
"It was a vampire wasn't it?" Audrey cut her off.
Chris sighed and stood up. "Yeah."
Leigh's eyes widened. "Chris! You're a Watcher aren't you supposed to be all secretive. Keeping the cat in the bag and all that."
Audrey raised her eyebrow. "What's a Watcher?"
Chris smirked at Leigh. "That one was you."
Audrey decided to change the subject. "What's a Fifth Avenue girl like you doing down here?"
Leigh smiled sadly. "I wish...I actually work around the corner."
"What building?"
"On the corner."
"Oh." Audrey looked down. "Sorry."
"Nothing to be sorry about...let's walk you home."
Chris stood up. "Yes, lets."
"I-I can't." Audrey sighed.
Leigh looked confused. "Why not? Your parents must be worried."
"I don't have a home. My parents died when I was younger." Audrey refused to look at either of them.
Leigh and Chris looked at each other and immediately Chris knew what Leigh wanted to do. He slowly nodded.
"Well," Leigh started. "My apartment's down the street. You could come with me."
"Really?" Audrey looked up.
"Sure."
*~*~*~*~*
As soon as they got to Leigh's apartment, Chris went into a back room and shut the door, assuming that Leigh might want to talk to the girl.
"Hungry?" Leigh asked.
"Starving." Audrey said honestly.
"Turkey or ham sandwich?"
"Turkey."
Leigh started making the sandwiches. Audrey glanced around the apartment, it was a nice apartment, very spacious. Audrey was surprised, if Leigh was only getting money from the street, how could she afford it?
"Um, are-" Audrey faltered. "Are you and that Chris guy together?"
Leigh giggled to herself. "No, we're friends."
"He's kinda cute." Smirked Audrey.
"Yeah, but he's always togged to the bricks and gammin' around."
"He doesn't seem like it."
"You just met him."
"How old are you?" Audrey asked out of curiosity.
"Nineteen."
"And Chris?"
"Twenty-five."
"How did you meet him?"
"You ask a lot of questions."
Audrey smiled. "So I've been told. I'm just curious."
Audrey's smiled faltered. "But I still want to know about the vampire and I want to know what a Watcher is."
Leigh sighed and walked into the living room. As she sat, she handed Audrey her sandwich.
Audrey gratefully took it. "Did you know about vampires? I mean, you were the only one out tonight, there had to be a reason."
"I told you. My job."
"You also said that it was around the corner. How did you know I was back there? I didn't scream."
"I could feel it."
"How'd you know how to kill it?"
Leigh sighed. "If I tell you something, do you swear to keep it to yourself?"
"Yeah, of course."
"I'm trusting you."
"You can trust me, I swear."
"Alright." Leigh took a deep breath. "Here we go. I'm a Vampire Slayer. I was chosen to rid the world of vampires. It's my job. I can feel vampires when they are near. Chris is my Watcher. They...watch, I guess. I'm really not quite sure about his job, but he watches over me and guides me."
"No way!"
"Yeah."
"How long have you been doing this?"
"Almost two months. The deal with this Slayer thing, is when one dies, another's called."
"So, someone had to die for you to become this?"
"Yes."
"Wow."
"Yeah, now if Chris finds out, I'm in trouble."
"Find out what?"
Leigh looked back at Chris, who was standing in the doorway. She smiled innocently, "Nothing."
"What did you..." He trailed off and thought. "No! You didn't!"
"She's not gonna tell anyone!" Leigh defended.
"How do you know?! And that's not the point! You knew the rules!"
Leigh sighed. "I know, but how was I gonna explain that stuff? She already knew about that guy being a vamp!"
Chris sighed and sat on the couch. "I'm too young for this."
Leigh smiled. "Yes, but it's not my fault your dad is a head guy in the Watcher's Council. He made you do it, not me."
Chris looked at Audrey. "Just...don't tell anybody, okay?"
Audrey looked up at Chris, down to the floor, and back up to Chris. "I don't have anybody I could tell." she said honestly.
