I'm so annoyed! I was going to start watching the show "Vikings" but decided to watch a trailer first to get a feel for it, just clicked the first one on the list that appeared and of course some d-bag made it and at the end of the trailer he puts the ending of the first season... I'll still watch the show but man, that's really annoying.

The internet kind of sucks for spoiling people nowadays - the online news sites don't seem to care anymore if their headlines spoil you. 

Taake: I totally will, I just need a few days to get over my irritation at that trailer. 🙂

And somehow I managed to avoid all the Teen Wolf spoilers and sneak peeks until I finished watching the season 5 premiere…

Spoilers can be good, I live in Australia where TV programmers are crap. If it wasn't for a spoiler I wouldn't know if a DVD of a TV show was worth buying.
For instance that Teen Wolf show, I have no idea what it is like as I've never seen a spoiler for it.
The best spoiler ever was for Charmed season 8, the programmers here decided to show the first six episodes one year and next year put the rest of the season on TV, unfortunately for them the DVD set of season 8 had been released a few months before it was on TV.

So, for those of you who hate spoilers, why not get Buffy Summers to have a a thread or two just for spoilers? I could get to see what's on TV in the rest of the world.

I don't see your logic? Just knowing what happens in a show doesn't tell you if its good or not. If you hear about a twist then I guess you might be able to say if its a bad twist or a good one, but you still need to see it in context with the rest of the show. If you want an idea on whether to watch something then reviews or word of mouth are much better ways to know.

It also seems to be an international sport right now. Like for GoT, you're reading a post from someone on FB, then scroll down and read "FYI, Mister X. dies right there".

You just have to ban yourself from every social network the day after the show was aired when you live in Europe.

I usually don't really mind spoilers, it doesn't prevent me from enjoying the show/book. I even look for them, I'm too curious and eager to know what happens. When a movie is too tense, I stop watching, go on the net to get an idea of what's gonna happen and then I resume watching. Also, I noticed that I'm quite good at guessing what will happen anyways.

But, I remember being traumatized as a young teenager. Someone spoiled me a death from Harry Potter. There was a vivid argument after that.

I read a whitepaper a year or so ago from University of Pennsylvania that through their studies posit fans gain more enjoyment from literature or media when they have been 'spoiled' than those that have not. They are doing more testing but the general idea was that when you read or watch a show and you reach the spoiled part your brain releases dopamine. So the spoiler actually makes you feel better, makes you feel rewarded. Whereas when the big plot twist that we should have seen coming we did not, we are subjected to emotional embarrassment at the perceived cognitive failure.

In cultural studies, the act of "spoiling" (getting and giving spoilers) is actually considered to be one of the main features within the panel of fan productions (along with taking part in an online community and writing fan fic). It comes from a desire of knowing the most at the soonest, and of "possessing" somehow the story because for a short amount of time you know more than the "common" audience member. Fans are curious and interested little creatures!
