Only Vulcans are totally logical beings, and the only Vulcan on "Buffy" was killed by Faith in Season 3, and reported by Andrew in Season 7. And lest we forget, you are one of the major contributors to this thread, which makes you just as illogical as the rest of us.

That doesn't mean that you should not use logic or rational thought
 
Yeah, the balance of probability indicates Spike hasn't got a destiny, his character has gone through so many radical changes over the years- from Big Bad, to alcoholic love-lorne loser, to comic-relief, to Buffy's punching bag and sex toy.

It's only when he makes the choice to take control of his own life and go and get a soul that he becomes his own man, and not some shell of his former, demonic self, lurking about making people miserable.

To say that this was all part of some master plan/destiny thing makes Jasmine's declarations on Angel look like small meddling in comparison. 🙄

Back to the point of the thread: Spike wasn't killed because: Buffy was too honourable, Willow thought it would be too weird to kill a vampire they knew (she's sentimental like that), Giles thought he had infomation/could be useful to them in the future.
I can't think of a reason for Xander not to stake him, he hates vamps, and never really warms to Spike- my guess is that he was following Buffy's lead on this, like he does a lot of the time.

I don't think so. In my opinion Buffy lets Spike live because he's an asset. His knowledge about the initiative, demon world and past slayers is useful. Spike is still dangerous and Buffy still hates him but she plays it smart and potential benefits outweigh potential dangers.

I was re-watching the season the other day and it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps Buffy keeps Spike around because she misses Angel. She, irrationally and unconsciously, feels more connected to the vamp after which she still pines-- when she is around his former friend and partner in crime.

That's assuming that Angel's vampirism is the reason why Buffy is attracted to him. I don't think that's true as Buffy was attracted to Angel even before she knew what he was and OK, sure, vampirism is totally a part of the package but is it really that important? Does Buffy have a vamp fetish? Is she only attracted to wicked energy? I don't think so. Most men she is attracted to on the show are humans ( Owen, Parker, Riley ) and her most fulfilling relationship happens with a human as well.
 
I didn't mean to suggest that Buffy felt closer to Spike in season 4 because he's a vampire and she misses Angel's vampirism--or that aspect of him to which she's attracted. I just meant, simply, that she misses Angel. Spike, though entirely different from Angel, was by his side for so many years and the idea is that Buffy might feel an emotional attachment to the idea of having him around for that reason.

I can somewhat see your line of thought, and I'd agree to a certain extent. I'd say that maybe Buffy's relationship with Angel had an effect on her view on the world, she's more open to the grey area of vampirism, so is less included to kill Spike, which is an argument put forth succinctly by Dawn 'Angel had a soul, Spike has a chip: same diff' (I know that's not the exact quote but it's more or less what she says.

I don't agree with that line of thought, but I can definitely recognise it.
