Lorne's make-up is a tough one to start with and you are doing it last minute by the sounds of it so your problem is at least two fold.
For years I would alway's be approached by people at the last minute to do make-up for them, be it for theatre or just for Halloween, so I'm going to pass onto you a little advice that I alway's shared with those people:
If you want it done right you should alway's plan well in advance so it can be everything you want it to be.
Now I realize we are in the month of October here and your time is short so here is my direct advice to you:
This year, the day after Halloween, start planning your next years make-up and costume. NO JOKE...do it. You and everyone around will be much happier you did.
Since it's so late in the game this year I would advise cutting all the corner's you can.
You have black hair already? it should be a cake walk to frost the tips with some spray on Red or If you can find it, Rust color and you'll have Lorne's hair once it's all spiked out.
The horns can be shaped up easily enough out of super-sculpey and then, after they are baked and hardened, sanded or filed into a closer shape. Two tips for working with Super-sculpy for what you want:
Once you get the horns about the shape you want them, take and gently press each one against your forehead in the places they will go later when they are hard, Then bake them.
Don't over bake your sculpey. I find 20 minutes at 150 degree's to be sufficient. This will allow you to add more sculpey if you want and re-bake later.
If you burn them, you gotta start over so take it slow and do it right the first time.
Once the horns are done they can be pre-painted and set aside for later application.
Before you start your application you should wipe your face down with alcohol to remove as much grease and oil as you can from your skin.
Now you are ready to put down your guide lines for your later horn application.
Take each horn and hold it to your fore-head where you want it to go and with the other hand and a green make-up pencil, draw a circle around it. Set the horns aside again.
Lorne's make-up is all about texture and variances of color and also differs greatly from early season's to later.
Decide which season Lorne you are doing and get as good and close a photo of him from that season and tape it up next to your mirror where you will be applying your make-up.
Lorne's colors are wide and varied so purchase your colors after identifying as many of them as you can in your photo.
Off the top of my head I can say your going to need some base color Green and lot's of it.(don't forget your hands and behind your ears!)
Also a lighter and a darker green for highlighting and shadowing and all those wonderful spots that go up and down the sides of his face, neck and fore-head. I'm pretty sure there are some yellows in there too and some burnt reds.
When the make-up application is complete make sure and powder well.
Apply your powder liberally to your sponge and double it over itself and rub the sponge together which crushes the powder crystals and makes it spread better.
If you can, roll the powder on don't pat it on and get everything covered well.
After the powder has set for a while you need to take it off.
That's right! When the powder has soaked through the oils in your skin and set the make-up as close as it can you need to remove it because it's done it's job.
Eyeliner is the very last thing you'll be doing so you shouldn't have to worry about anything running when you go to remove the powder with water.
For powder removal I find some kind of good spritzer is in order.
Take a paper towel and have it at the ready.
Spritz your face liberally and DON"T SCRUNCH UP YOUR FACE!
Relax and just let the water spritz run down your face and then use your paper towel in a rolling motion to remove the moisture along with the used powder...DON'T
RUB IT OFF...
roll or
pat if you must.
You will find that not only are you refreshed from this powder removal but your skin is cooled and the colors that you applied so carefully have now popped back to their original vibrancy.
Lastly, if you are concerned about the make-up getting rubbed off at all, you can use Ben Nye's FINAL SEAL which is a matte sealer that will set the make-up. Apply this too with a spritzer if you can and again Dab or pat it with a sponge to cover your whole face and hands.
Now, in the next year you can get an early start by finding someone who knows what they are doing and get a good life cast made for your self on which you can sculpt Lorne's face (his face was one big appliance).
You should also consider getting contacts made as they REALLY tie a make-up together. I highly recommend looking at
http://www.9mmsfx.com/index2.html
as they can make contacts for you from a picture! They did this for me for my Angelus Make-up and it was a life saver as they weren't just yellow as you would think, I found a very close picture of Angelus' eye's and they had an extra ring of orange around the outside!
Anyway, there's some BASIC suggestion's for you to get started on.
Just think what you could accomplish in a year?
🙂
Good luck and post some pics when you are done!
