According to newscasts, record heat is expected to hit Los Angeles...in Woodland Hills, it's supposed to be 113!!! 😨

We're reaching 86F/30C plus. This is the moorland above Manchester. To the best of my knowledge, we're not dead: just suffering from "smog, sore eyes and nosebleeds".

PFFT!! In oHIo we just had 10 days where we hit low mid 90s with 50-90% humidity (so real feel was 5-10° higher). 😕

I've opened all the windows to let the cool air in before it gets hot. Now, I'm going to lie down and not move for while. As a matter of fact, I think I'll go back to sleep...it's 70 degrees right now at 6:23am. *yawn*

Time to toast this extra-dry, drought-stricken Sandy Eggo! The remaining plants are barely clinging to life already.

My mom and I have spent the last month or so clearing away a woodpile behind our house that was a fire hazard.

The 2003 Cedar Fire came right through our yard, burning palms, some wooden boats and my mom's orchard. Firefighters (one of whom my mom went to high school and had gone on a date with) had to break open the back gate. Luckily, the pool was in the way between the fire and the house. We were all down at Qualcomm Stadium with our motorhome and kitties. R.I.P. Dad and kitties.

Our neighborhood has also been experiencing a rat-pocalypse for the last few years. We've caught 400+ rats in cage traps. Neighbors and us have all had mice/rat invasions in houses, too. Currently trying to get one of those little f-ers. I have to remove the nuts from my parrot cages every night. The coyote packs disappeared when we had the fire, but we've also started to see them return. Haven't seen rattlesnakes lately, thankfully. The joys of living on a canyon!

I can't remember the last time it sprinkled enough to even water the plants here.

Half the neighborhood has AstroTurf, wood chips or dead dirt lawns. My old Norfolk pine Christmas trees, however, have gotten so huge that they hide the house from the street! Luckily, we do have some massive trees on the property that keep the house in the shade and cool (along with it being closed up with fans). We don't have air conditioning (or heating that has been turned on in 30 years).

Where are our resident Texans who would point and laugh at the idea of 113°F being excessive? I have been through Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin, Round Rock, Houston, San Antonio and a few other places there where the humidity is high and a car is only as valuable as its air conditioning. I have also been in Mesa AZ when it has been 116°F. Are they still trying to fool people with the idea that this is a dry heat, so it doesn't count? And I was in a three-piece suit all the time there.

Worry about the rest of California drying out and burning up that didn't get caught in fires last year. The temperature is not the problem. And there will be a lot of military vets around who could regale you with stories of the heat in Iraq or Viet Nam.

We've (he) had to water the garden yesterday, which is unheard of in rainy Scotland. I've spent some time outdoors topping up my freckles, but the heat doesn't suit me, and that's only with a high of 30c, which is apparently only 86F lol. Good luck living in the Hellmouth!

Present. I gotta say 110 and above is still a rare event for us. Anywhere from 100-110 is a normal August day but I’d say getting over 110 is pretty rare. But with the humidity it’s not uncommon for us (especially coastal areas) to have 110 that feels like 115 + Which is basically a sauna. I just can’t imagine going through this type of heat wave without AC. Is California one of those places where it common for homes not to have AC? Everyone in a Texas has AC.

I know a few years ago I was balking at the New Yorkers who were freaking out because it was 90 degrees and we Texans were like yeah it’s 90 degrees for Christmas here sometimes! But what we forget is some of those North East homes don’t have AC so they are not equipped for that kinda heat.

My chickens didn't want to go in their coops tonight, which meant I spent way too long outside for comfort. Their little tongues are hanging out panting. They've got a lot of water sources, but the bees were turning one of them into their personal pool. My little Bantam chicken didn't want to leave the cool entryway. I had to hand out extra treats to entice them.

It's Hades outside. I'm in my undies under a fan. No air conditioning in this house, but it's much cooler inside.
