Los Angeles heat wave starts tomorrow!

I know a few years ago I was balking at the New Yorkers who were freaking out because it was 90 degrees and we Texans were like yeah it’s 90 degrees for Christmas here sometimes! But what we forget is some of those North East homes don’t have AC so they are not equipped for that kinda heat.

I don't have A/C and it really sucks. Currently, I'm sitting between two fans; and actually, it feels pretty good! I am SO happy that I bought the second fan at Target yesterday!!! Thank God. 😃
 
We have central AC plus a portable room air conditioner in our bedroom upstairs. The portable has two hoses, one for condenser inlet (outside air) and one for condenser outlet (hot air). You can get them with only the outlet hose but this uses inside air for cooling and the same quantity of outside air has to leak into the house to keep it running, so the efficiency is minimized. The hoses are mounted to a plate which is placed vertically in the window. Nothing hangs out of the window. Our room unit is 13,000 BTU and works well. We have had temperatures over 90°F here in the past week.

I have heard San Diego described as the land of the short thermometer (and I have been there twice). It's about to lengthen.

We also have seven ceiling fans in the house.

Why do you need the portable AC if you have central air? Just curious.

I’m surprised to hear Cali is about 50/50 with a/c. I have visited a few times. One thing that always struck me is how cool it feels in the shade in Cali, even when it’s hot outside. I think maybe it’s becauae y’all are dryer? Here you cannot escape the heat it follows you and it’s sticky (especially in Houston, SA and Austin is a little better). I was in Vegas last week and it was 104 or so and seriously it didn’t feel all that bad. Still I snuck back into whatever a/c casino was close by!

I swear to God that I'm getting one of those portable air conditioners!! My DREAM is to have my place at 60 degrees (or lower) at all times.


Everybody says that it is global warning warming that's making it so hot. But I believe the sun is getting HOTTER..perhaps its going through the first stages of becoming a super nova.

Our house is a four-bedroom backsplit with the central air in the basement. The circulating fan does not do very well at pushing cold air up to the top floor because cold air is heavier than hot air and the ductwork is longer and resists flow more. Ideally, the furnace should be in the basement and the air conditioning on the top floor to take advantage of natural airflow but that would require separate ductwork and no one wants that. The portable air conditioner fills in a gap in upstairs coverage.

Even within the Los Angeles area, the San Fernando Valley may be at 82°F when Malibu on the coast is at 74°F. It all depends on where you are.
 
It's nearly 4am and it's 90 degrees. HELP MEEEEEEE! 😩 Its so hot, I just woke up to get some cold water. Now I'm going for some Sunny D in the frig. Two fans going and I'm still sweating. This is hell...
 
Cant say I miss the summer heat. Plus, I refuse to live anywhere without air conditioning. What good is a house if ya get heat stroke anyway? Currently 40F here.

Yup, it's usually significantly cooler in the shade in CA, and it usually cools off a ton in the evenings. Unfortunately this heatwave is a weird one where the shade doesn't help any and it didn't get below 90 at night. Most people without central a/c are able to keep their places cool by opening windows in the early morning and evening with only an hour or two of uncomfortable heat in the afternoon.
 
I remember one summer when I was a kid our air went out. It was the height of summer so what we would do is take a super hot shower (seems counterintuitive but think how much colder it feels when you come out from a hot shower?) anyway we’d take a super hot shower then lay down in front of a fan and that was the only way to fall asleep before you got super hot again.

Yes, I do that. It definitely works but it's torture jumping in a hot shower when you're already burning up.

That's smart. I've put a damp washcloths on myself then lay in front of a fan...that works pretty well.
It's crazy. Last night was a complete NIGHTMARE. What's really annoying is today its humid and hot.
 
Last week we were having your weather but now it's 79°F and 33% humidity. At least the fires haven't started yet where you are.
