Meaning of Life

It's probably not mean watching Monty Python non-stop, but to each his own. And I was just wondering what do you think the point of life is? Maybe you think it's having endless philosophical debates about what it is and if so, you're in the right place! If not, you're still just as welcome. I'm just curious to see what everybody thinks of it. What are all of us doing on this planet? Apart from paying spending our hard earned money on taxes to keep bureacracy working and slaving for our bosses from 9 to 5 everyday and for our husbands/wives/parents the rest of the time. Maybe it's really just to watch Buffy and Angel; you sure'd have a point. So, to any and all... why are you here?



PS: I wonder whether the point of life is to make 8,000 posts on this board?

Doh! I shoulda stopped posting here when I got that many, lol. Can you btw maybe explain why the Hitchhiker's Guide holds that 42 is the answer to everything?
 
Personally I believe the meaning of life is to Live, obviously your going to live, but truly Live, enjoy your life, enjoy each day, take the bad and the good and let it build you as a person, Like, Hate, Love the people around you, as long as you feel something. Enjoy the company of Friends or Family, hell enjoy the company of strangers or of yourself, but don't regret having not done something, or talking to someone. Then when you die, you leave behind your memory to live on through others, to carry on your life through the generations. You can't have a Life if you don't Live.

Well thats never truly answered but a couple of nights ago, I just had a serious coversation about the number 42, the quantum-mechanical wave-function of the Universe, and its possible correlation to Douglas Adams book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

But as we all know that numbers are the foundation of well everything it's all too possible that the number oculd crop up somewhere with regards to major universal questions.
 
I'm glad I didn't go study Physics, cause that link is just a bit too much. And I don't think numbers are the foundation of everything. I mean you couldn't have "two blind mice" without the two, but you couldn't have them without the mice either. (Watch "Phantom Tollbooth" if you're interested in it.)

I can see your train of thought BEG, BUT I have one (big) objection, which is that it does not encoorporate the concepts of "good" and "evil"; personally, I think that somehow doing the right thing has to work into this, but to be honest, I just don't know how yet.
 
I personally think there is no one true meaning of life. We're born, we live, then we die. You can sit and hypothesize till the cows come home(usually better if its 4 in the morning, and your pissed....i've had some rousing meaning of life debates in this state!!!!).
The only thing thats important is 'Whats the meaning of life....for me?'
Thats the only question that matters. Live life to the best of your abilities, enjoy what you can, do whats needed. Be the best you you can be....and as Baz Luhrman said....use sunscreen!!!

Personally I believe that you have to do the right thing for yourself, not for everyone, it is impossible to please everyone, but you can please yourself. I am the most important people in my life, I know that sounds weird but I am, and I have to do what I want or I don't please myself and that means I regret something, and I don't believe I should have to regret anything.

Now I know people believe that by saying that I live by my right and wrong then people could take that and abuse it, saying that they believe stealing and murder is right, But I believe that some moral grounds has to be taken.

I guess I believe in the old saying "what goes around, comes around". Yes, you are the most important person in YOUR life, but in life in general, you're just a tiny bit; not any more or any less important than anyone else. I think you should try to help other people to the best of your abilities. If you do, you'll be rewarded accordingly in the end. If you devote your life to helping others, what you give to others, they won't have to spend on themselves in in the end return it to you, in full circle.

I'm not saying that it will always work. I mean, we're only human and we're flawed... very self-centered... but we ought to fight it.... I guess selflessness is really the meaning of life. Then again, if all you do is give and give more... maybe one day nothing will be left of you.

So, philosophical question... is selflessness the path to nothingness?
 
I belive life is just this... it's living. And as said in Buffy, "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it" and i agree with this. We breathe than we die and we are taken to a better place... we are in gods waiting room waiting 2 go up 2 heaven.. to the gardens of heaven. There is no explanation for life but just to live and to take every obstacle as it comes... we are not meant to live forever.... and no living thing in life can exist forever and that includes the sun.. the sun is a star and all stars blow up.. so because we are close to the sun.. all humanity will be lost unless we lived on a farway planet.... the way things are, are the way things are and everyone should appreciate every beautiful second on this planet and every breathe until you die.
 
Saw an interesting doco last night about the possibilties of time travel. There are some wacky ideas out there, some of then coming from esteemed mathematicians/astrophysicists. It was basically concluded that the amount of power/energy needed to create "time travel" was always going to be beyond us.

However, the program then went on to say that the processing speeds/power of computers has been growing exponentially for quite some time. If this continues, it's possible to imagine a not-too-distant future where computers are capable of creating virtual realities of the past that look/sound/feel/taste/smell absolutely real to the virtual traveler. And, what fun is it traveling in this virtual reality by yourself? These computers would be able to populate this entire virtual world with simulated people. Several billion people could be simulated carrying out gazillions of operations at any one time. For example, George W. could be a virtual traveller from a couple of hundred years in the future, playing out a fantasy where he gets to be President of the only superpower in a truly global world. How else could he become president? Furthermore, for the sake of realism, this fantasy would have to be populated by simulations who acted like real people. And for them to do that they would have to actually think they were real people, making their own decisions, etc.

"How does this relate to this thread?" I hear you ask. It's simple. Stop worrying about the meaning of life because we're all simulations anyway!

some months ago i read this article writen by a man, who is a theologist and a sientist and his article was a coment on the whole davincie code thing.. and well he said something i found interesting: that men at that time, in jerusalem and around, eternal life for them was to have kids and grandkids etc.. to keep the family line going... or their own dna... maybe thats the mening of life..? to just live while you here and leave pieces of yourself(dna) before you go?

LOl or maybe we are just at the hands of mice, who see us as their expiriment?


or maybe there is no meaning to life? maybe it just is.. (i can't talk about that though LOL whole anxiety thing, when i go down that line i start thinking about what if there where no planet earth, no us, and maybe no universe, there would be vertually noting.. NOTHING.. or maybe there are other universes, and maybe there were non of that either, so it would be a whole NOTHING.... )
 
The point of life to me:

Make your friends happy (I think I do that)
Have your biggest dream come true (done)
Somehow contribute to make the world a better place (kinda done?)
Be happy with what you have (I am)

So I can actually die happy now since I kinda achieve all of it at some point of my life ... :nuts:

That's pretty much exactly how I feel. Plus, Baz Luhrman is a genius and listening to that song kind of gives me some sort of hope.. comforting and true..

a million quadjillion points if i could....a very healthy look on life and a place for Baz too....cool
I remember when the sunscreen track was released....it was one of the wierdest pieces, but it helped me define myself that summer....ohhh and our College tutors thought it would be 'cool'(note College Tutors + Tweed x lame = Dorky NOT Cool as they thought) to do a revamped redition...urrgh!!

If people haven't heard it....i recommend you try to find a copy....

Well, I usually steer clear of the "deeper" questions...probably cause I'm so shallow! LOL 😉 But I think life's just a gift from someone above, and your body's just the bag you carry it in. Lifes the time your given to do with it what you will. Some people think it's more important to become president, or be rediculously wealthy...I'm just here for the ride. I'm here to say I've lived and had a damn good time doing it. I've never turned down an opportunity to do something crazy, or different. I love to travel, and I make myself as social as I can be. I want to see and do as much as I possibly can while I'm still breathing, even if it's just a lesson learned.......so after all that rambling I guess I'm just here...well, to live. :Bolt:
 
DEATH.


There is only one thing that we all got in common and that is death. Life is just a journey that's supposed to take us to our destination which is death. So obviously there can't be any sorta meaning to life itself besides the dieing bit, which leaves our lives as complete blanks with which we can and are supposed to do whatever we feel like doing.
