Mental health

One thing I had forgotten about having depression is how freakin' tired it makes one. I am exhausted almost all the time, sleeping way more than usual and often just go home from work and crawl straight into bed and just lie there.

This is my first week of doing only two days, so fingers crossed that it helps my mental state improve. My brain has been pure mush these past few weeks. Today I forgot how to spell photographer 🙄

Yeah. I completely understand. And I know the dark thoughts you're experiencing. Dark as a bottomless pit. 😞

Does the name Donald Trump come to mind when extolling those who argue with themselves?
A few months ago he said how good were China for stopping the virus now he is saying they were/ are not.

I had a breakdown yesterday and realised I hadn't dealt with some trauma I'd went through in the last 6 months. I dismiss a lot of things and am quite flippant towards life, but it festers still, and it's only when say it out loud does it sound bad. Just because it's my normality doesn't mean it's not important and needs dealing with. It's good advice I've learned in the last 24 hours.

"Just because it's my normality doesn't mean it's not important and needs dealing with." That is a very important point. Hang in there.
Like @Bluebird I tend to dismiss a lot of things; I HAVE to, otherwise they'd overwhelm me. But it's so very difficult to do that on a daily basis!! Because no matter how much you suppress things, they're still there. And right now, I NEED a rest in hospital. There's just too much going on for me to deal with...

*hugs* hope you get that rest!
Clearly apple is a bad word as it's the fruit that ended man's time in paradise. Apples are evil.

Apples are unjustly maligned. The Hebrew word indicates ”fruit” but not apples specifically. Could’ve been a pomegranate or grapes, so don’t drag the apple name in the mud!

You're just an apple apologist.

Unapologetically so!

Breaking open a pomegranate looks like you've just murdered someone, definitely makes sense for it to be that.

Apples aren't mentioned in the bible. In Lucifer, Eve claims the forbidden fruit was a (very big) banana. Lucifer agrees (but then he would, wouldn't he?).

Doesn't Judaism suggest there were two trees in Eden? The Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life. I think the latter was allegedly a ficus (The Sacred Fig).

Pomegranates (and figs) are far more interesting than apples.

"Pomegranates have diverse cultural-religious significance, as a symbol of life and fertility owing to their many seeds but also as a symbol of power (imperial orb), blood and death. Pomegranates already symbolised fertility, beauty and eternal life, in Greek and Persian mythology. The Ancient Greeks considered a pomegranate a symbol of fertility and associated it with the goddesses Demeter, Persephone, Aphrodite, and Athena. The Bible only mentions pomegranates in the Old Testament. The hems of Jewish priestly vestments are decorated with a stylised form of this fruit (Ex. 28, 33f; 39, 24-26) and, as such, a pomegranate is a metaphor for the richness of the promised land of Israel (Deut. 8:8); in the Song of Solomon, Sulamith’s cheeks are compared to halves of a pomegranate (Cant. 4: 3).

In Christian symbolism (Hieronymus) the numerous seeds in this fruit represent the Church, unity in faith and a community of believers; in the same vein, a pomegranate appears in depictions of Mary as ‘the Mother of the Church’.

Pomegranates play an important role as a symbol of righteousness in Judaism, as they supposedly contain 613 seeds, which correspond to the 613 commandments of the Torah. Thus, at Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), Jews eat this fruit one seed at a time, for as many wishes as possible to be fulfilled.

In Buddhism, pomegranates, peaches and lemons are considered three blessed kinds of fruit.

The Koran mentions a pomegranate three times (6:99, 6:141 and 55:68), representing, for example, the good things created by God, whether earthly fruit or that of Paradise, hence it is also sometimes referred to as the ‘apple of paradise’.

In the Middle Ages, the resemblance between a pomegranate and an imperial orb made it a symbol of power, probably a relic of Ancient Germanic representations. Albrecht Dürer painted two portraits of Emperor Maximilian I holding a pomegranate, to represent the imperial orb. Since then pomegranates have been seen as an aphrodisiac and are an ingredient of many love potions".

Meh...apples. (I became interested in the above because a) of the Giles mini b) I have too much time on my hands).

@nightshade consider yourself one of the fallen as now you get to answer one of my questions.
Spanky obviously didn't read that bit properly, it wasn't an apple that forced mankind to leave the garden it was God who forced mankind to leave. But having said that and considering the name of this thread and if you consider that Spanky says he wants to change houses.
So nightshade how do Spanky and Mental Health come to be connected?

Just couldn't resist 😳

I used to suffer from anxiety and depression, mainly because I got bullied at school but it always helps to just talk to people. Just be confident in yourself and know that everything will get better. I joined a little Wicca group and everyone there was so nice and supportive, I realised that people were bullying me because they were jealous of me which made me want to do better. Let your anxiety drive you to do better and overcome it. I became a practising Wicca, learnt Mandarin Chinese, Greek (my family is Greek), Japanese, Spanish AND German, as well as studying hard at school. People hated me even more, but I felt better knowing that I had that power. I think that that is the main thing. Have the power. Once you get it, nothing can take it away from you! I also found that you can’t just pretend to be confident and laugh when people are mean, you have to ACTUALLY believe in yourself, because (and I quote) ‘even though you have the stake, they have the skill, and they will use it’. I don’t know if this helps or makes any sense for that matter but I hope you guys get what I am saying! Stay safe ya’ll 😊 💕

I guess I'm one of those weirdos who's actually relished working from home.... I moved into a new house the week before the UK locked down, and while at first it was strange, I got used to the solitude and video chats.

I've purposely kept myself busy at home during lockdown, so much so that now we're getting out of it here, my schedule doesn't accommodate much else, like socialising and seeing people! 😂 Lockdown has actually meant me meeting new people online, doing weekly film re-watches online, and we've all got on so well we're arranging a real life meet up once it's safe to do so! My mental health has actually struggled more with returning to an office environment, seeing people; I get anxious if I feel remotely unwell thinking I might have COVID and isolation actually helps me not feel so anxious....

Wow! It sounds like you were so busy... I haven’t really done anything productive in lockdown... my life has revolved around watching Buffy, and doing Duolingo 😂 😊 💕
Funnily enough, my mental health has actually improved in the last few weeks during Covid-19, as I’ve gotten back in touch with friends I hadn’t been in contact with for a few years. One friend’s letter to me inspired me to get back into the art of letter writing and I’ve sent 4 letters in the past week.

I enquired about volunteering at the Community Garden in my locality and was told that I can start helping out from 27th July for a few hours each week. It’s a good thing to do and a good way of meeting new people.
