This is just so sad to wake up and hear. I don't think anyone especially Michael Jackson for what ever problems he's had in the past should suddenly have to die like this. He was a true legendary icon even carrying on today with so many artists paying tribute and doing cover versions of his songs. This man literally stopped traffic where ever he went and no matter what I don't think he deserved to be taken like this. Today the world is going to be in mourning on a serious level.

I'm actually really gutted he's died, regardless of the accusations, which he was found innoucent of, he was a musical genius! His stuff is some of the most widely known in the entire world. Billie Jean, Thriller how many people have never heard these songs?!

I know my mum's really upset too, she grew up in MJ's golden years, before all the accusations started flying about. He was like her idol, she went to see him live. I guess it can sometimes depend really. You have people who don't care, which is a little harsh but fair enough. And thinking about it his life can't have been the easiest by far! Constantly in the spot light from a tiny age, never being able to be left alone in contentment, constantly shadowed by accusations of numerous offenses. And dying at the age of only 50. It's all a bit sad..

Wow, this is a shock. I just found out from my sister (she woke me up to tell me 😛) and I didn't believe her at first. I heard they said it was anxiety and stress that caused him to have a heart attack. 🙁

I love the "The Boy Who Never Grew Up" piece Revolver posted. I always seen him as a Peter Pan like character, so damaged in his own childhood, that he wanted to prolong it, and make it a happy one. I have heard many stories about Michael's Father, and I truly think he damaged Michael's mind and life.
He was a sad figure. And it is very sad that no matter what he has achieved, the darker parts of his personal life (true or not) will gain the most attention. It would be nice if the media for once could just remember his music, because he was a musical legend.

Side story: The obsessive Michael Jackson fan I mentioned ^ is currently in hospital. She sat in her garden last night, crying, and downed 2 bottles of vodka. And had to get her stomach pumped. She has also changed both of her dogs names to Michael. Poor confused dogs, and poor confused lady. Yikes.

Shit, Yeah. Wow. I was in the car driving to the mall with my mum when I heard this over the radio. I was like....wow.

I got 2 text messages about it. one from my mate saying "I can't believe Michael Jackson is dead"

another one from some bitch, as I was saying over IRC that said "michael jackson is dead. His family are notsure whether 2 bury him or chuck him in the plastic recycling"

I have been a major fan of Michael my entire life. I heard the news last night, and was utterly speechless. My boyfriend and I just sat there watching the live news feed online for hours.
This is a painful day for me, his music shaped my childhood. This is just really difficult.

All the talk of Michael Jackson reminded me of the time he played here. It was at Glasgow Green, which is an outdoor venue in the city centre, but the production of the show was so great that I could hear it all from my house. 😛 And they had the most amazing lights. He really knew how to put on a show.

No matter what people thought of the man personally, he was an American icon. People all over the world knew who Michael Jackson was. Even in places where little is known of American culture, or the lack thereof, people pointed to Michael Jackson as an example of said culture. Loud, brassy Americans......and Michael Jackson...that's us. We can't say he didn't have emotional problems. I believe he did, and I believe they stemmed from the treatment he got as a child and the fact that he spent his entire life in the limelight. I think he was trying to recapture something he lost when he was 6 years old and that it never really worked out for him. When you think about it...that's the saddest thing of all. He must have spent his whole life in his own particular brand of Hell (pink poodles on parade Hell, or lack of shrimp Hell, who knows). I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, and I can come up with some pretty vindictive stuff. Did I make fun of him? Hell yes....he was freaky. I make fun of Tom Cruise all the time, too....doesn't stop me from seeing his movies. I enjoyed his music and I do think he was a great performer and I am sad that he's dead....I think a light has gone out in the entertainment world.

I heard this last night about 11pm (GMT) when it was still unconfirmed. I got goosebumps this morning when I woke up and saw it was for definite, and I've gooten goosebumps all day whenever it's been reported or his music has been played on the radio.

Think what you want about him, he was an absolute musical legend. I feel so sorry for him that after near on 50 years of unimaginable fame and wealth, he never found happiness, I hope he is at rest now.

I think it's a shame that people, in order to remain controversial and get a kick, have to insist on making unnecessary and inappropriate comments regarding him and his personal life. To be quite honest, you know absolutey nothing about the man himself, or what happened with all those accusations. You know as much as I do about it in fact.

Like I said, I hope he finds happiness and security with himself now. He was an absolute legend and deserves the most extravagant of tributes; I'll be tipping a can cider towards him tonight. RIP.

Never been a fan of either the person or his music. But he was one of the biggest stars ever.
I do think he got a bit to big though, It looked liked it got out of control.
Personally I felt mostly sorry for him. Don't think he had an easy life.

Nice post, Atticus. I agree that we should all feel bad for Michael. He had a tough life. Being a child star, usually, seems to leave life-long scars. Considering he made it this far without killing himself is honestly a feat in its self.
