More football (soccer)

My predictions are all off as well. I predicted Brazil, Ghana and Argentina to be in the Semis... I predicted Spain to beat Paraguay comfortably as well, but it looks like they might prove me wrong as well...
 
That was another odd game, especially the sequence with the 2 PKs. I think Spain did deserve to win though. Germany vs Spain should be a good match.. I'd give the edge to Germany just because they've looked so good in the knockout rounds. I can't believe Klose is 2 goals away from passing Ronaldo. Could be a Germany vs Netherlands final, that would be a fun watch.

Germany and Holland absolutely hate each other judging from what i've heard, so it would make for an interesting final. I'd want a Dutch victory. At least then Germany wouldn't go further ahead of England in terms of World Cups won and the Dutch would only have won one.

Germany v Argentina. I am so glad the German team gave the Argy bargies a sound whooping, the Argy team were crap!
But the Paraguay v Spain game was a debacle. The Paraguayan (?) goal that was given offside, why? The guy was blatantly onside when the ball was kicked.
Spain's penalty - the first was disallowed because of a Spanish player being in the area, on the second attempt there was three Spanish players in the area, so why wasn't it taken again? When the player was brought down by the goalkeeper was the ball still on the field of play? A second penalty? Overall though the Spanish deserved to win, just.
But how good was the referee? He only missed 1 or 200 free kicks.

In years gone by it was possible to say who might win the game / world cup. But not this time, on paper this team or that team should win, that is the best that can be done. These games have another factor in the outcome, the pathetically incomptetent referee's and the seriously bad linesmen. How many times has their pre-match drink of half a bottle of Scotch and 5 tablets of Valium completely affected the outcome.
Who can forget Rooney being called offside after he was played onside by the defender, or Fabiano's goal when he handled the ball twice before he scored.

One thing I find strange, players have to go off to get a cut fixed, because of the blood rule ( the risk of infections being spread ), yet they are allowed to keep spitting all over the place.
 
In regard to the referees it all started so well them. For the first round of games i thought they were really impressive however as time has gone on its kept on getting worse.

Yellow cards being given out by some referees for fouls which warranted little action whilst other players are committing terrible fouls and not getting booked, Van Bommel yesterday was one example. He kept deliberately breaking up the rhythm of the game yet escaped unpunished.

You also have to mention key decisions which have had a huge impact on games which isn't what you want to see in any game let alone a World Cup. Lampard's goal not being given, Argentina scoring a clear offside goal against Mexico, USA having a valid goal wrongly chalked off against Slovenia are just some big decisions that the officials have got wrong.

We don't really hate each other. I live in a Dutch town that is basically populated with a lot of German students, and we get along. There is a bit of a football rivalry, like the one between England and Germany, but we really really don't hate each other. On the contrary, if Germany doesn't win, the Netherlands is the team I would most like to see the Cup win. I was wearing orange on all the days Holland was playing, and yesterday I saw one of my Dutch friends with a German flag painted on her face.

Of course it could get tough here after the final...I won't be in town for that (going to Denmark on vacation the 9th already), but I can imagine if Germany wins and the German fans act all superior and what not, a brawl might break lose in this city.
 
Maybe i was being a bit too heavy with the use of hate but i think i'am right in saying that the Dutch's biggest rivalry in Football is with Germany. They lost to the Germans in the 1974 World Cup Final, they want revenge. :smile3:
 
So incredibly happy that Germany beat the crap out of Argentina. Sometimes life is good. 😀 Seeing Holland winning was also great. I love the final phases of this World Cup. Too bad Ghana didn't manage to win but they had their chance so nothing more to it. And it's not like I mind Uruguay even if I don't want to see them win it all. I like Spain but if they don't play better I hope Germany beat them too. I'm falling in love with this german team, not to mention Müller. Impressive guy to say the least.

I think that Graham Poll, or if it was another ex referee, said that exact thing. I wouldn't mind it.



Leaving the World Cup and on to what I think about Roy Hodgson as Liverpool manager. You need to realise one thing. Liverpool is in a crisis. For a so called big club that is. They're in real bad shape. What they need is someone to take care of that mess. Something I think Roy is one of the best managers suited for the job. Excluding the overly optimistic supporters I don't think anyone will expect us to be big challengers. But with that said if he only gets the players confident, happy and relaxed I think he can do wonders. If Gerrard and Torres stay that is. Low expectations along with harmony in the team I think will show a huge difference to the team we saw last season. But there's no guarantee that he can bring harmony. We can just wait and see.

Of course I need to mention that Roy has been in Sweden and done a wonderful job in Halmstad and Malmö FF ("my" swedish team). Hoping that'll be a good omen. 😀
 
What are everyone's predictions for the Semi-finals? I reckon:

Uruguay - 1
Forlan
Netherlands - 2
Sneijder, Kuyt

Netherlands outclass Uruguay in most areas of the pitch, but Forlan will trouble the weak Dutch defence.

Germany - 3
Podolski, Klose, Schweinsteiger
Spain - 2
Iniesta, Villa

It'll be as close as hell, but Germany will just about snatch it.
 
Oh I can't bother with the score or who scores the goals but my prediction is the same as who I want to see in the final. Sadly that's rarely a good sign...

Anywho. I think Netherlands and Germany will win.

Living in Germany right now, I see the flags hanging on balconies and the black, red, yellow cars.......

But I'd love to see a Netherlands vs Germany.... Should be interesting....

Now Germany needs to win! Holland wants us to win as well, cos they wanna play us in the final...of course they also want to win, but that's another story 😉


You should see what's going on in town here tonight! You can really tell these people haven't been involved in a final since 1978, everyone is just going insane on the streets. Cars honking, city centre locked off, drunk people everywhere, everything orange...and it's nice to see the Germans and the Dutch still getting along, still rooting for each other.

That said, I'm half deaf and pretty hoarse now from cheering on Holland at the pub...need to go to bed to save some energy for Germany tomorrow 😉
 
Congrats to Holland! I get money if Spain win, but I've always had a soft spot for the Dutch team, it'd be great if they won it. And then I like Germany and they've played some great football this year... so to sum up, I'll be happy whoever wins.

Spain deserved to win, Germany put on their worst performance this WC.

At least now I can freely cheer for Oranje without feeling bad. That said, PLEASE, let Holland take home the cup!

Fair result in the end. The final's almost too close to call, but I think Spain might just edge it.

Glad we'll be seeing a new name on the trophy.
 
Now we got a Holland vs Spain... Let see what Paul the octopus would say about the issue of this match.... Will it be right again??!

Nevertheless there is still Germany vs Uruguay... Let see!!
