more Rewind Moments

I don't think I'm the only person that finds fascinating all the little moments in Buffy you only really see from multiple viewings. I thought I'd share the ones I was able to catch from Showtime.

An interesting thing has been happening with the symbols carved into Spike's chest and stomach. In Never Leave me you can make out symbols on the corners of the triangle on Spike's stomach. In Bring on the night there's only a little half-moon on one corner. Now in Showtime each corner of the triangle has a clearly defined symbol. Are these symbols significant?

There's a couple of jokes I missed the first time:

Xander is untieing Andrew's Arm from the chair and Andrew squeals, "Careful, that my Joystick hand."

Xander replies, "I'm not going to touch that one".

The first time I heard this I thought Xander meant he wasn't going to physically touch the hand.

There's another zip-by joke, where Anya is complaining, because no one wants to have sex with her. She tells the demon she feels like a leper. The demon tells her to come back when she is a leper. Was I the only one that missed that joke the first time.

I have to get closed captioning. No matter how mean times I rewind that bit where Andrew is talking about Bond films I can't make out what he's saying. He seems to be saying something about the Brocolli's who I think were producers of the Bond films.

I hear people on the Buffy boards complaining how unlikable the SITs are, because they're so whiny. These people should go back and rewind those scene's to watch Molly in the background.

Molly is super-likable. Molly is this good-hearted, well-meaning, meaning klutz with a Xander-sized appetite. She's a total misfit, but she's anxious to be a part of the group. She's more a scooby than a slayer in that respect. Another thing I enjoy about Molly is the way she totally idolizes Buffy. Even the FE can't shake Molly's Buffy-respect.

To go on with rewind moments though, for some reason the FE wants to keep Spike and Buffy alive at this point in the storyline. We know this, and because we do, there's something we miss. When the FE is giving instructions to the Turok-Han, it says "take them all...except her". We assume it means take them all except Buffy, but that isn't what it said. It said take them all except "HER".

I'm still suspiscious of Kennedy. I realize she's being set up to become Willow's future squeeze, but that doesn't necessarily mean she's good.

There's an interesting thing buried in the mind-speak scene.

Buffy is speaking, but it's Dawn's voice. It's kind of like the scene at the end of a murder mystery where the detective voice-overs what was really happening behind the scenes to create the murder.

I'm thinking the writers wouldn't do this unless they planned to do it again in future episodes, because if it's only used in this episode the technique seems out of place. I'm thinking they're going to use this technique again to explain all the little mysteries from Season 7 like why Wood went into the school basement, then buried Jonathan.

Another thing about the mind-speak scene. Buffy can contact Willow, but Willow has to connect with Xander. Is it possible that Buffy and Willow developed a Psychic connection during the scene at the end of Same Time Same Place, when Willow and Buffy connect Psychically to heal Willow?

The last rewind moment I was able to catch was one you see on first viewing, but you don't really connect full significance to. It's at the end when Buffy comes to rescue Spike. Rewind that scene and concentrate on the shoulder touch of Spike on Buffy and what happens immediately after. For me it was a completely different scene after I did that.

I was wondering the same thing about the Buffy-Willow connection in that scene.

It's possible, of course, that Willow can "receive" psychically from non-telepaths as well as "transmit" (which we saw her do in S5 and S6), and that this was just an additional skill she picked up or honed when she was with the coven.

And it's not surprising that it took a little more effort to contact Xander. 🙂

Yeah, this is one thing I really noticed and thought was kinda strange. Since Dawn is supposed to be an SIT, and this season was supposed to be more Dawn-centric, I'm kind of thinking they were talking about her. If, at all, the FE was talking about another SIT, I'd say "her" is meant to be Kennedy.

I've always been under the impression that Willow's telepathy wasn't something she had at all times, rather, it took a spell to connect her with other people. I don't really have anything to base this on, except she doesn't seem to be reading all minds all the time. Plus, if this power was on all the time, wouldn't she be in an Earshot situation?

So I just assumed they set it up before hand to telecommunicate to one another - possibly in case there was another mole in the house. Or to really prove something to the SIT's.

Actually i heard this season is supposed to be spike-centric....and i believe it so far.....bcuz dawns time was during season 5 with the whole key and glory thing..by the way..i thought that was wicked cool when buffy, willow, & xander were do the telepathy thing...bcuz u had no idea in the original scene....of all of them...until they went back. Also just to say stuff about the episode...i though the big eye thing in the demension was such a smart-ass....but so cool....and it said something about "THE" slayer....not exactly buffy right? bcuz of course it knows buffy isnt the real slayer right now....so it new stuff about faith....thats cool....also i think they should talk more about the whole faith thing...and buffy dieing...it would be cool for them to mention it.

I think that if they have a special connection it would be from the time of "the Weight of the World"

I'm also a little more cosious when it comes to Kennedy at some point she's just too perfect!

One more thing, not an actual rewind moment, but one of the first things Buffy said to Ronna was "Welcome to the Hellmouth" ... sound familiar?

I think in "The Gift" (S5) it may have been a spell that allowed her to project to Spike without speaking.

But a lot of the powers she stole from the coven via Giles during "Grave" became a part of her (as Giles told her in England). And if the coven was as powerful as they were supposed to be, they would have trained Willow to manage her telepathy so as to avoid any "Earshot"-like situations. But I'm just speculating.

I do agree that Buffy and Willow at least came up with some sort of emergency plan to communicate telepathically if they felt it might be dangerous to speak openly during a crisis. (I'm guessing there was probably more to this in the story, but it got cut for time.)

To me the most interesting aspect of the mindspeak scene is the way Dawn's voice is doing the voice-over for Buffy.

Personally I think this is because Dawn fancies herself a kind of detective so she's recalling the scene in her own mind the way she thought it happened-- It's like what Hercule Poirot did at the end of Murder on the Orient Express.

If I'm right it means Dawn is in on how the telepathic thing works between the Scoobies, and maybe we'll get more information on it from her later.

Maybe Buffy didn't know about any of this, and maybe it were Xander, Willow and Dawn who ochestrated all of this and Buffy had nothing to do with it, she was just an innocent bystander!

Except her = Willow 😉 ::wave::

On the other hand it might be Dawn since she is still a key, maybe for the hellmouth?

What? That doesn't make sense. Buffy was in the know, she talked to Willow telepathically in the kitchen, then later, Dawn turned to Willow and said, "You planned this."

Yeah, my guess is that Dawn knows about Willow's telepathic ability, and that's why she was able to figure it out.

I was just talking crazy, trying to explain why Buffy talked with Dawn's voice!

Your guess is best solution yet 😉

Why is everybody saying it's Dawn's voice? It's not. I've watched the scene over and over agian, and I'm only hearing Buffyvoice.

It definatly was, I re-watched it too, and it was Dawn's voice allright, or Sarah must have had a really nasty cold!

I dunno, it's a tough call. I know when I first watched the scene, it never occurred to me it was Dawn. It was one of the things I was going to pay attention to on the rewatch. I think the echoing effect distorts her voice, but it's Buffy's. Sarah and Michelle have a similar tone quality in their voice, so it's hard to tell them apart.

I say that I have to agree that its Buffy's voice. I knew right off that Buffy had spoken. But she and Dawn do sound alot alike. Besides, why would they have Dawn saying it? She wasn't even on the screen right then.

Try this; Listen to that scene again, but this time shut your eyes. I think you may change your minds.

It isn't just the tonal quality of the voice, it's the voice mannerisms.

Btw, I was doing a little research. I think those symbol's carved into Spike's chest are a Mutant Enemy version of Bindrunes. There seem to be basic runes carved into the eyes of the Bringer's and I seem to remember you can see runes floating around above the Bringer's table in Amends. Also runes can be formed in the shape of a wheel with spokes for magical purposes. You can see such a wheel in Amends and Never Leave Me.

The reason I think this may be significant is because Runes are something like an Alphabet. They offer information. If they are runes and Giles should see them, he's going to know the FE's secrets

Double Post (next time use the edit button!):

I just listened to the mindspeak scene 5 or 6 more times.

Sarah Michelle Gellar says "Willow, can you hear me?".

After that Michelle Trachtenberg is speaking Buffy's part.

I've actually done this, several times, and that's how I came to my conclusion. Particularyly, the line, "I have an idea, grab Xander." I dunno, listening to it again....it's a tossup.

Here's your James Bond quote:

Liscense to Kill, huh? Pretty cool. You know, Timothy Dalton never got his props cuz he came in at the end of an old regime, he had it going on, he went rogue with the broccoli's. The were just"¦treading water stylistically.

After Buffy exposes the first evil as Eve, Andrew says "I need to go wash up again!" LOL!!!! It took me several times, but I just realized why he said it! HAHAHAHA!

Thanks 9th.

Actually I stopped listening to that bit, cause I knew you'd help out us closed captioning impaired sooner or later.

Diminished_9th,

Could you explain the Bond reference please? I don't get it at all... never have seen any of the old ones. Thanks!
