Who were, in your opinion, the most improved actors on all the shows?

For female, I would have to say Sarah Michelle Gellar. At first, she wasn't the greatest actress, but in The Body she showed us how much she can do in 45 minutes.

For actor, I guess I'll say James Marsters. He started out as the villain and quickly evolved into the anti-hero we were all rooting for (except Flannen. 😛)

Not EVERYONE :D
I'd have to echo your call with SMG on the actress front, she definitely got better & better. As for the guys, I'd have to go with DB. I find his performances in season 1 of BtVS painful to watch at times, but once he had to do Angelus in season 2 that really helped with his range & technical ability. After that, through season 3 & onto his own series he became one of my favourite male leads on TV.

I don't know about SMG, I'm pretty sure she was an Emmy Winner before she was even cast as Buffy.

And I believe Marsters was a well regarded Theater Actor before he was Spike.

Yeah, I'd go with Boreanaz, because I don't think he did much acting prior to Angel, and by AS2 he gave some dynamite performances.

I believe that in s1 no actor or actress could really show a great acting range cause it's only 12 episodes and there was an uncertainty about how the show would turn out to be.

Sarah was good from the beginning, she followed Buffy's steps exactly as she should IMO. From the high school girl who wanted to be part of her society to the hero that would sacrifice herself for the good of others. She definitely proved her quality and although I dislike s6, she was great there reflecting Buffy's darkness.

David definitely improved year by year. In s1, he had very few minutes mostly as Buffy's love interest who appeared every now and then. In s2, as Angelus he kicked ass! and I liked him very much in s 2 and s3 as Angel. Of course in his own show he proved how talented he is.

I like Eliza Dushku who actually was good from the beginning. And Alyson Hannigan also is great and has much potential!

Boreanaz. I'm still re-watching Angel season 3 and I just finished "Forgiving" and the ending of that is a great example of how far he came.

lol, puppet cancer :D awesome line
^ I agree!!! In season 3 of AtS he actually was GREAT! I was so shocked at the episode where Connor is taken away from him and then he attacks Wesley. It was a very powerful scene and David proved that he is awesome!

Boreanaz was the first to come to my mind. I finished watching season 1 last week and the way he delivers some of his lines is just... poor. He gets so much better during season 2 and by season 3 it's easy to see why they wanted to give him his own show.

I'd go with Boreanaz, he was... well not excellent during season 1

So would I. It's really quite impressive how much he improved. He really wasn't very good in the first season, but by S2-3 he was doing a decent job as Angel (and a really good one as Angelus) and then he got better still on his own show.

I was always a fan, but I've got to say early on, I don't think he looked the part. He was relatively thin, and sans-fangs, he just didn't look like a big strapping hero or someone especially intimidating in general. By AS2, he had a more substantial build. And early on he didn't have the type of personality, like Spike where somehow it was believable that a guy 100 pounds bigger was shaking in his boots at the sound of his voice.

I think all of the actors continued to improve as the series went on. James Marsters was consistently good from the beginning whilst David Boreanaz's performances after season 1 were also very good. The characters evolved so well over time and credit has to be given to the actors for that. Giles also changed quite a bit throughout the show and that was represented really well by Tony Head.

I may be biased but in terms of the core cast i can't think of an actor who didn't improve as the show developed.

I don't know, I really thought he looked the part in season 1 but that that was pretty much it. I mean I appreciate the buffness of him in later seasons but slim season 1 Angel still makes me go "Hello salty goodness" every time I see him... at least until he opens his mouth, then I kind of cringe 🙂

I'm not talking attractiveness, I'm talking intimidation 🙂

6 foot-tall, slim, pale guys wearing Velour Sports Jackets don't really strike fear into the hearts of criminals here in the US 😉
