Sarah was pretty damn good from the word go. David really improved though from what he did in S1 to playing Angelus in S2 and then Angel again in S3. Emma was pretty good from start to finish but I still think she improved as the series went on. Nick really improved when you look at S1 then look again in S7.

Yeah, Sarah was a two time Emmy nominee and one time Emmy winner, did three years on All My Children, theatre work with Eric Stoltz and Stockard Channing, and tv movies and commercials before BtVS. She was always great. Her speech in Prophecy Girl is one of the best acting scenes on the series.
James was always great but given the right material *S6* was able to really show off his acting range and depth.
David Boreanaz is hands the most improved. He could barely act his way out of a paper bag in the beginning but each season improved to the point that by the end of AtS he was a truly great actor.
