My Kennedy rant

As for Willow/Tara being a reason for my hating her, it might play a small part but then again I really didn't like Tara for a bit because of Oz but learned to love her as the seasons moved on.

gasp! ok this is where if anyone says something like this, i stay shocked. How can anyone hate Tara? Or dislike her in your case. I can understand that Woz was an almost perfect relationship and I really enjoyed seeing the two of them together. BUT!!! You have to remember that Tara gave Willow a choice, and even almost gave Willow up so she could be with Oz. There is no reason to hate her. Ok well maybe dislike her a bit in Family when she kept that whole demony thing at bay but still!! Tara never forced Willow to be with her. So there lol

I really disliked Dawn in Empty Places for kicking Buffy out of her own home, Dawn might live there to, but she still had no right to do that to Buffy!

True dat homie! I was so pissed off! Like wth why are you going to kick her out of her own house? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

And I want to slap Dawn every time I watch Empty Places. It was like "Uh, you ungrateful bitch. Buffy has DIED to save your life and THIS is how you repay her? How DARE you?"

LOL 😀 That's exactly my reaction every time!

WOAH! Hold on! I would never say hate in relation to Tara.. ever, I just disliked her at first. I don't believe anyone could really hate her, even during Family. I just felt bad for her in that ep, having to grow up with a family like that!

Oz and Willow made a great couple, that's true but Willow and Tara were better together imo. I just wish that Oz didn't leave BtVS then, he should have stayed on. HE was a true Scooby.

this is true. I was sad to see him go. And even though he returns in s8 it's not the same! *cries*

I can't believe this thread got revived *hangs head in lap and sighs*. I'll never understand the God-like hero worship Buffy gets but I know better now not to try and debate against the Buffy acolytes lol. I also don't think Kennedy is anywhere near as bad as you guys make her out to be but I'll stand aside and let the bashing commence/continue.

I agree with you B. ;) But there's nothing wrong with a good discussion!

Buffy's not a god. She makes mistakes and I think she made several in season 7. Going to the vineyard the first time was a bit rash... I see why she did it and I probably would have made the same call... but it was a bit rash. The second time though... was perfectly logical and thought out. I honestly don't understand where everyone else is coming from in Empty Places. I just really don't get it.

Apologies for restarting the thread, but after reading it all I couldn't help but comment. Don't get me wrong I like Buffy, but I also sometimes dislike her, my feelings towards her vary each time I watch. My point here was that in those episodes her actions, although a bit harsh and unfavourable, were justified.

If you can stand Kennedy to the point of actually liking her then congratulations. I love the show and would rather not hate any of the characters but with Kennedy and sometimes Dawn I can't help it they just drive me mad!

I tell myself not to engage but sometimes I can't help it LOL 😛

See, I'm on the opposite fence. I can't fault her for the first trip to the vineyard because she didn't know who Caleb was or what he was capable of but once she knew, she had no right or sane mind to take those girls back to him. As evident by what happened. She managed to sneak in, grab the Scythe, and get around Caleb without even physically confronting him. Which shows she didn't need the potentials there and definitely shouldn't have tried to bring the potentials back there, for both their safety and the overall effectiveness of the mission.

On my first complete rewatch I was glad for Willow to move on with Kennedy, but now on my 3. I absolutely hate her 😀, and I have to confess it's probably mostly because of Tara.
Anyway, Kennedy really makes it easy to hate her.

Don't want to fuel the "Empty Places" war but everybody didn't even want to hear some suggestions or plans, they blocked off the going-back thing at instant. Which I can understand, because no one can expect blood-bath surviving little girls to go back in the dirt but how they came from this to the Buffy bashing - that's what I dont get. It kind of escalates out of nowhere.

Okay, in retrospect that's true, but she didn't know that at the time and asked for help. The end of the world was what was at stake, Buffy had to weigh the odds and ask herself, is it worth it? She was willing to lay her own life on the line to save the world, so shouldn't these "potential slayers" be ready to do the same?

In the end if it hadn't been for Spike's pep talk she wouldn't have managed it on her own anyway.

That she does!

I suppose the "Buffy" bashing would have come from the resentment towards her building from her earlier comments in "Get It Done", but imho it was still way over the top and Dawn had no right to kick her out of her own home..

Buffy's been the slayer a long time, battling great evils, adjusting to the new life and abilities. She's trained long and hard, been able to get used the calling and the danger that comes with it. These 'potentials' are nothing more than fifteen-year-old girls who were thrust into peril, terrified beyond belief and ripped from their normal existence, forced to be in SunnyDale, facing an EVIL that none of them have the ability to sustain any real offense, damage or threat to. So, I'd have to say no, they aren't ready to do the same IMO.

EDIT:
I agree though, Spike's role in 'Touched' is what gave her the strength and resolve to go to the vineyard on her own and succeed. It's why I love Spuffy so much! 😀

While I'm not sure I want to fuel the fire of off topic conversation... I just want to remind everyone when Buffy was called, she was 16... and she knowingly went to her death to save the world. The potentials had the right to be scared, but they had no right not to trust her.

The three dead girls that Caleb murdered and Xander's right eye were their right not to trust her. In the end Buffy did it alone and it should always been clear to her, that was how it was supposed to be.

You are forgetting that the Potentials hadn't watched the show and couldn't know for sure if Buffy was being temporarily stupid or was just an idiot with superpowers all of the time.

Okay, in retrospect that's true, but she didn't know that at the time and asked for help. The end of the world was what was at stake, Buffy had to weigh the odds and ask herself, is it worth it?

The thing is there was no reason known to the group to go back to the vineyard, except Buffy's premonition that something was there (bad writing 101 - in the previous episode she thinks it's a trap now she is sure the key to victory is there). Couldn't Buffy go alone and see if Caleb was even there - for all they knew he had just used the building as a trap one time and his base could be anywhere. What's with the desperate rush - Buffy read the script and knew the final episode was coming?

Kennedy's a bit of a brat and that's the real problem. She's a smart girl, decent fighter and she reads people quite well. A lot of her views on Buffy's leadership are quite accurate, she just runs her mouth off. She spoiled and has an ego and expects her views to not only be heard but accepted. Basically she's used to getting her way. I don't hate her for that it just doesn't make very interesting viewing and unlike Buffy who also has an ego and wants her views to be accepted, Kennedy hasn't done enough to warrant that. Buffy doesn't deserve complete blind loyalty from the group but she's earned the right to be heard. With Kennedy it's very much- "Who are you again and why are you talking so much" 😀.
She's an ok character for me but it's really her relationship with Willow that damages the character for me. I never bought it, not only was it way to soon after Tara but there was zero chemistry between Alyson and Iyari. Tara and Willow should never have worked but it did because it was portrayed well and became a believable relationship. Willow and Kennedy could have been two straight girls kissing really, I just don't think they clicked at all. I like Iyari a lot I just think Kennedy would have been a better character without the Willow relationship.

I would continue to post about Buffy and the events of Empty Places but I think this thread needs to get back on topic...

Like any potential slayer she has her skills, it partly comes with being a potential. You are right about her, she's a brat and used to getting her way and it's exactly that and the way she acts when she doesn't that drives me mad.

You are right about the chemistry between them, it makes the relationship that much harder to watch. It would have been much easier to ignore Kennedy if they'd never gotten together! 😀

the main problem I have with Kennedy is that she thinks she knows every move, everything that's going on, so she's better than all of it. Her whole personality is so wrapped up in her ego she can't see the big picture. She's just a frightened girl like all the other potentials.

And question, do we ever figure out how old she is? Isn't Willow like 22 there?

She was a poor choice next to Tara, but maybe the memory of what she and Tara had she didn't want tarnished, so she went for a whole new kind of girl. I still think she was a poor choice. She didn't even "believe" in magic, but she's dating the most powerful wicca in the western hemisphere. Got on my nerves.

Agreed!
As I've promised to let you rant in peace I'll just add this.

And question, do we ever figure out how old she is? Isn't Willow like 22 there?

According to the shooting script for Bring on the Night, Kennedy is nineteen, and the oldest of the potentials to arrive at that time, though this informaton is never given on-screen, Kennedy does reference herself as being the oldest of the potentials.

The problem with Kennedy wasn't that she was arrogant and bossy. Cordelia, who could probably give her a run for her money, was still very likable and relatable. Kennedy just wasn't written very well. I also think the actress was the weakest of the actresses playing the Potentials, though I'm not sure what difference it would've made. By the way, Rona, who too had a 'rude' personality, never got on my nerves; in fact, I quite liked her.

I also take offense to the fact that Willow hooks up with the first lesbian that comes knocking - or in Kennedy's case, barging in.

And to top it off:

Phi-Phenomenon, a site that provides statistical analysis of online Buffyverse opinion, has demonstrated that the number of lines of Kennedy dialogue is a statistical predictor of an episode's unpopularity, both among committed Buffy fans and among those who by this time were disenchanted with the show.

I agree with your entire post. When I first saw Cordy I thought she was a bit annoying, but like 3 episodes later and I loved her. I was hoping the same thing would happen for Kennedy, but to no avail. She really was written poorly, and Iyari Limon was just the wrong person to play her character. I honestly feel we didn't get to see Rona enough.

To that last comment...my feelings EXACTLY!! She just barged right into Willow's life without invitation and took whatever she wanted, which in this case was Willow.

And to top it off:
Cordy didn't assume she was part of the group because she existed. She earned her place in the scoobies. Kennedy assumed that was her right. And Rona was my second least favorite potential. More times then one, I wanted someone to punch her in her face. When Cordy was rude, it was funny... obviously a joke. With these two, especially Kennedy... I felt it was real.

I do totally agree with the whole taking offense to Willow hooking up with the first lesbian that comes into her life... and the "barging in" is so true. It really pissed me off how she did that...
