My Personal theory about why the slayer line became unstable!

I think he was refering to the previous Slayer that visited them. Presumably, Nikki Wood.

No that isn't what he meant. It's my fault though, I misquoted. Here's the actual quote from Get It Done.

BUFFY
I thought I brought me here. Listen, you guys. I'm already the slayer, bursting with power. Really don't need any more.

RED HAT SHADOW MAN
SUBTITLE: The First Slayer did not talk so much.

I also misquoted the Joss Whedon quote. On re-reading I see it caused confusion, because it seems to give the impression I was saying Joss Whedon thought Season 7 lacked complexity. Not at all. I don't believe Joss would ever say that.

Here's what he actually said.

Q: How would you explain the message to fans who didn’t understand season seven?

Joss: Watch it again when it comes out on DVD. I think not understanding it would be the worst, because it’s almost didactic in its clarity.

I've always taken this as meaning Season 7 is almost instructional when you believe what it tells you.

why are you here defending your own theory. I get what you're saying and I agree with it. It does make me think we're rather silly for us to discuss it even then.

Boy, I must have been confusing when I posted last. I apologize. No, I'm not so much defending my theory, as defending the right to hold opposing views. I have a way of looking at Season 7. Someone else may have another way that works for them. Cool. Good for them. They just can't tell me theirs' is the one, true, and only way. If they do I'll be forced to show them how my interpretation makes as much sense as theirs, if not more.

Also I like to offer up the opposing view from time to time for public scrutiny, to see if it can stand the test of debate. That's OK, right? 🙂

Does anyone ever think that maybe the disruption in the slayer line was caused because the line became confused when a slayer died but the slayer stayed alive and then another slayer came, say the line can be confused and only sees when a slayer dies etc, so wouldn't it be confused when a slayer died twice, but the line wasn't passed. I know its a bit of a stab in the dark but like nearly all our theories its at least possible i think

On whether or not a slayer can also be a guardian of the Hellmouth; Giles says this in Bring on the Night -

GILES
That's what it is. It has eternities to act, endless resources. (stands) How to defeat it"”I-I"” (sighs) honestly I don't know. But we have to find a way. If the slayer line is eliminated, then the hell mouth has no guardian. The balance is destroyed

Then it hit me maybe, when buffy came back she was reinserted into the line, but didnt push faith out, instead it brought about the formation of two separate slayer lines running paralell to one another, which would obviously cause instability in the slayer line, i mean whats more unstable than being cut in two!!!.

Buffy's died and been brought back to life twice though so wouldn't that make three parallel lines and therefore three slayers? The way I've understood your theory, it would mean that at the end of season five, another slayer should have appeared....

(Sorry I haven't read the rest of the thread)

Usually the theories involving Buffy being reinserted in the line take place after Season 5 and demand the occurence of Willow's spell in Bargaining.

A new slayer would not be called as a result of the death in the Gift, because the line would still be passing only through Faith. Joss himself said that was the case. Once the spell takes place however new possibilities are present.

I'm assuming Xin's theory would fit in that grouping of after "Bargaining", even though there are twin slayers with the line passing through both of them.

Definately! If there was any disruption in the slayer line it would have to be at the point that Willow used magic to bring Buffy back.
I was thinking about the arguement that buffy now hold the slayer line because she was reinserted into the slayer line when resurrected, and it was this shiftt from faith to buffy that caused the instability. However I thought if that was true then I didn't see where faith would be, would she be pushed out of the line or what?

This means that both buffy and faith's death would cause the activation of a new slayer meanng there will be two slayers forever.

However some may argue then why isn't there two slayers in Fray, well the answer is simple, sometime after buffy the slayer line obviously returned to normalacy because in fray there'nt are like a thousand slayers.

True, buit for the two slayer part, Fray and Harth share the slayer line as she has the strength and he as the prophetic dreams and memory...

Well buffy would have to been literally put back inbto the slayer line..if she wasn't then she wouldn't have any powers..then she wouldn't be the slayer..
I don't think it is meant to be understood.

She wasn't put back into the slayer line when she died in series 1 and she still was a slayer had the powers to prove it

Maybe because once you have it it isn't something that can be removed, once a slayer always a slayer, no one is saying that she isn't a slayer, just that she might not be the slayer

Once more, someone who hasn't seen Get It Done. Slayer Power isn't something a Potential is born with. It's an external invasion of demon essence. If you want you can see that essence as moving on at moment of death.

Now you can see the Potential as being born with an attraction, or connection to the slayer line, but the actual power is an injection from the demon force, and it likes girls.

If you want you can reject that interpretation, but I don't know, show me a better one with support from the series.

Was this a response to my post or someone elses?

Also the essence doesn't move on after death, look at Buffy.

When I say demon essence I'm talking of the thing used to create the first slayer. I'm also talking about what the shadowman calls "source of your strength", not her actual strength. I'm also talking about what the Shadowman calls "The well of the slayer's power". Get it Done tells us the thing which creates power within a slayer's body is external. Somehow, in some way it comes from some place enters the body of a selected Potential and empowers it. When that slayer dies, somehow that external energy finds another slayer and empowers her.

Up until the end of Season 5 we are told first by Marti, then by Joss, the slayer has something within her to pass the slayer power at her time of death, but can only pass it once, then the next slayer has it.

My point is Get It Done only tells us an external energy creates the power within the slayer. I know of nothing within the series which tells us slayer power is an inborn power with an on/off switch that flips you in and out of the slayer line, and is connected inextricably to it.

And actually Xin, I believe I was addressing this comment.

Lol fair enough, glad we cleared that up
I think the reason Buffy still has superstrength could be related to disease, in a way. View the slayer essence as a disease, once you are infected by it, you are a carrier, death won't change that, but the "disease" can be passed on.

The way the demon essence is portrayed in Get it Done, does in a way lend itslef to the "disease" idea.

That's interesting, and might even be relevant to the Whedonverse. In Fray the character Urkon describes vampirism as a disease.

Neither are meant to be completely accurate, I suspect (in that disease is generally thought of as being physically debillitating), but I do get the models.

I think its more of an upgrade, once its done it cant be undoe, your changed forever, pretty much same as N4H said really
