Its time we stopped reinventing history and pretending white people have been the victims.
No-one is re-inventing anything, or indeed playing the victim.
But really it all depends of the timescale of your history, doesn't it? There are plenty of 'white' ethnic groups who haven't been that privileged in the wider scheme of things. Jews? Irish? Poles? Slavs? All have been cruelly victimized in the same/similar time-scale some idiots use to talk about 'colonization' and 'white privilege'; political nonsense imported over from the US.
White middle or upper class guys have long been the pilvage group. That hasn't changed a whole lot sadly.
Yeah, I guess working class white people don't matter then. That was certainly the view in Rotherham, Telford and a dozen or so other places around the country.
My take on cancel culture is that its way overblown and has been blown out of proportion.
Disagree entirely; many writers, artists, comedians and professors have all had their careers drastically affected by this, and even more professions point of the atmosphere of fear and self-censorship that has been generated in recent years.
People who have supported J.K Rowling have had their careers destroyed, a comedian was recently cancelled from
The Edinburgh Fringe, for god's sake. Overblown? Really?
To start off with its a very small minority of people saying such and such should be cancelled. I disagree with that small minority, but its a free country so they can express that if they want.
That's a lovely sentiment, shared by many, except those sad, pathetic few who regularly engage in cancel culture and also the large group of higher-ups who often seem to act at the behest of those sad, pathetic few.
Another thing is having a conversation about something which might be outdated or offensive is not the same as saying something should be cancelled.
Many of these self-styled culture warriors do not what to 'have a conversation' in any way, shape or form.
I can understand how a 22 year old watching an episode of Only Fools and Horses would find some of the racial slurs or homophobic remarks hard to stomuch. I like that sitcom but I cringe whenever I hear those lines. Do I think it should be wiped from existance? (whatever that means).
Oh, I guess you haven't heard about sitcom episodes having scenes altered or simply being deleted entirely from a series then?
I mean, a trigger warning for a comedy show is bad enough, incredibly childish really, but actually censoring art? Kinda crappy.
Noting has been cancelled yet people are still moaning.
Or maybe warning and pointing out clear abuses of power?
A lot if this is down to politics. In this country one of the front runners to be Prime Minister hyjacked the issue as a way to appeal to far right voters.
Haha, of yeah, that old far-right dog-whistle of free speech. Wasn't it a go-to liberal talking point way back a few years ago?
Its not an issue most people care about (and that includes many people on the right).
Lots of polling suggests otherwise, what with people getting arrested for posting 'offensive' tweets and the like.
There are many people who can realize two (or more things) simultaneously; the fact that there are many bad things happening in the world on top of the fact that civil discourse of politica (and cultural) matters is kinda in the crapper. Most people acknowledge that fact and also are capable of recognizing those responsible.
