Netflix Genre Codes

Netflix has an almost unimaginably large content library. So large, in fact, that it can be pretty daunting. How do you pick a movie when you could just keep scrolling and looking at descriptions infinitely, searching for that perfect flick?

It turns out that Netflix engineers have a huge number of genre codes for things as specific as “foreign satanic stories” and “visually striking stories for ages 5-7.” All these genres and micro genres have associated number codes. For example, going to this page (you have to be signed in to your or somebody else’s Netflix account) will show you all the French-language coming of age dramas, whereas this one will give you all the feel-good gay and lesbian movies.

You can find the full list of Netflix genre codes, listed alphabetically, here. Netflix’s codes change from time to time and can vary by region, so this is more art than science, but it’s still good to know.

Enjoy your British independent thrillers (3534) and critically acclaimed African-American crime movies (2715).

That's handy. I spent most mornings, afternoons and evenings trying to pick something to watch on Netflix. It's soul destroying stuff.

They do make me laugh and half the time their quite verge or non-descript. Its like "dark movies" What are they films with a lot of black people in them?

Or how about "Movies with strong female leads" well I'll be the judge of that when I see the film thank-you!

Does this mean Swedish 'flix is smaller in selection or what? I'm so densey. I've used American, Canadian and UK and they all seem different but much the same in content size. I guess that's the thing though, I can never actually tell just how many movies and TV shows there actually are available. I just scroll through the same section for about 14 hours per day.

Maybe. Really liked V For Vendetta & Cloud Atlas too. Didn't care for the Matrix trilogy.

Interesting. Only seen V once and actually didn't like it that much. Visually it was excellent, but there were issues with the plot and thought Portman was miscast. Not seen Cloud Atlas yet. I did like the first Matrix, so I'd say either that or Bound as my fav.

I wouldn't categorize Bound as a feel good movie, althout it is a good movie! (And not on Netflix Canada I should note).

But as far as true feel good movie, I would say

Kissing Jessica Stein is an AWFUL lesbian movie. Complete trash. One is a bisexual that goes to women because she's sick of men, spreading the idea that bisexuals can just choose between girls and guys at will and fall for the gender they choose to want, making it seems as though bi people really can just choose to be straight or gay. And the other is a "straight" girl that "turns gay" also because of men, but then goes back to guys once she realized she could never really be with a woman, ignoring the idea of panromantism and asexualism. The movie is full of stereotypical tropes about the LGBT community.

Kissing Jessica Stein is an AWFUL lesbian movie. Complete trash. One is a bisexual that goes to women because she's sick of men, spreading the idea that bisexuals can just choose between girls and guys at will and fall for the gender they choose to want, making it seems as though bi people really can just choose to be straight or gay. And the other is a "straight" girl that "turns gay" also because of men, but then goes back to guys once she realized she could never really be with a woman, ignoring the idea of panromantism and asexualism. But besides that you liked it right?😀 To be fair I've only seen it once and that was a long time ago, and its clearly a subject you would know more about, but at the time I thought the comedy was pretty funny, I liked the performances, and I believed in the relationship. To me it just seem to be showing than everyone makes mistakes in relationships, and for the film to work you kinda have to see that otherwise there's no plot. Anyway, I will go back and watch the film and get back to you.

Fair enough. But I'm a Cheerleader is the one with Clea Duvel in right? I like her. The title did suggest than it was quite tougue in cheek and I will give it a watch.

Just of another good one although it isn't a Lesbian movie per say, but Boys Don't Cry? I think the relationship in that is treated very sensitivly and the drama is very powerful. Big fan of that film.

Part the problem is that because Hollywood (and maybe film in general) is still so male dominated then women are under represented in films, which mean than lesbian films are struggling to break through. Its only the last few years where we've seen more mainstream gay films. Wow who would have thought the thread about netflix genre codes would turn into this😀

Also a couple with some lesbian aspects: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Pretty Persuasion, Foxfire, or Boys on the Side. To be fair I dunno how many of these may be on Netflix, tho. 😉

PP I've seen once and remember quite liking it. Need to see it again, really like Evan Rachel Wood, and not just for super ficial reasons😛 Foxfire's the one about the Girl gang right? Still need to see that one.

Just thought of another good one. Anyone seen the French Film Water Lillies? Pretty sure if I remember correctly there's a lesbian storyline in that. Anyway, its a great a film🙂 Oh and how could we forget Blue is the Warmest Colour?🙄
