(New) 30 Days of Bangel

Aug. 23 - Day 23: Were you satisfied with the Bangel storyline in canon?

Yes, through Chosen. I left BtVS with a very strong sense that Buffy and Angel would end up back together someday. I was less happy with AtS S5 from a B/A perspective and not at all happy with the comics, though like @Mrs Gordo I think of the comics more as a Joss-approved AU.

Aug. 24 - Day 24: Favorite Angel reference on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Probably the Selfless moment. But I also love:

BUFFY: Angel.
GILES: Is he in trouble?
BUFFY: He knows that I'm ... He, he needs to see me. I have to see him.
GILES: Yes, of course. You'll leave for L.A. tomorrow.
BUFFY: Not L.A. And not here. Somewhere in the middle. There's a, a place.
GILES: I see. Well, we should get all these ... bills and things out of the way before-
BUFFY: I gotta go now.

Aug. 25 - Day 25: Favorite Buffy reference on Angel the Series

SPIKE: She is cute when she is hurting, isn't she?
ANGEL: I think she's cuter when she's kicking your ass.

"I think she's cuter when she's kicking your ass" is basically my buffy aesthetic lol
Aug. 23 - Day 23: Were you satisfied with the Bangel storyline in canon ?

Short answer : On the show Buffy I say yes because they way I understand theirs conversation in "Chosen" is that the door is open for us but this will happen not now but in the future. I was happy with that because it gave me hope and that's all I wanted. In Angel season 5, I would have prefer no Bangel at all. Use that as a rivalry get sometimes on my nerves because both Angel and Spike acted like child and with a lot of vulgarities sometimes , coming essentially from Spike for me but whatever. I find them funny sometimes but in episode like "Destiny", this is just too much and I have the feeling that both vampires don't respect Buffy or theirs relationship with her by acting like they do. And let's not talk about "The Girl in Question" please ! And I'm kinda glad SMG coudn't be present in season 5 because honestly I'm not sure if Joss and his crew would have managed Bangel/Spuffy in the right way in this episode because let's not forget Spike is in Angel season 5 and I'm a fan of "you're welcome" and think Cordelia need a closure.
Concerning the comic, big NO. Because of the story Twilight, the Angel/Illyria thing, overall like I love calling all this mess "The great assassination of the character Angel". Please why did he have to endure all of that, it will have been easier to kill him .... ohhhhhhhhhhhh sorry I forgot that's the next step.

I LOVE a lot that Angel have a pics of Buffy with him. The first times I was really surprised because we never saw them taking pictures of themselves or talking about pics at all. It brings a more human side to Bangel and I don't know why but I love it.

This is probably the most obvious possible choice, but I’m gonna pick it anyway. The specificity of Alexis Denisof squinting painfully into the distance, a la Season 1 David Boreanaz trying to emote, is so funny to me. I do not mean to insult David’s performance by saying this, but he was literally discovered walking his dog, and the evolution of his acting abilities has truly been a wonder for us all to behold.

Incorrect myth. He went to college for acting and directing (had a football injury, so that was out). He had already begun working on bit parts like Married... with Children, though wasn't terribly successful yet. He wasn't discovered as a non-actor.
Aug. 22 - Day 22: Favorite quote about Bangel from other characters
Wesley "Angel experienced true happiness because he was with Buffy. Do you know how rare that is? True happiness?"
I love this, bc I hate how people think sex is the key to Angel's curse trigger. No the key is Buffy, his true happiness happened bc he was with Buffy. This is confirmed again when he has sex with Darla, Nina, and Eve. And yes even his sex dream with Cordy because he yells Buffy's name which tells me all he was thinking about was Buffy.
I'm just glad Wes said it!

Aug. 23 - Day 23: Were you satisfied with the Bangel storyline in canon?
For the most part, yes. I loved what we got in s1-3. I mean sometimes I wish we had gotten more scenes of them, but I thoroughly enjoyed them. I also enjoyed the shows references and crossovers after Angel left. I also was satisfied with the open endedness of Chosen. However, I did not care for how s5 on AtS handled Bangel. And do not get me started on the comics. That crap shouldn't even be considered remotely close to canon. All that is, is Spuffy fanfic.

Aug. 24 - Day 24: Favorite Angel reference on Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Gonna have to go with Selfless
Buffy "I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this life and I put a sword through his heart because I had to."
This quote shows not only how much Buffy loved Angel, but also how strong she is.

Aug. 25 - Day 25: Favorite Buffy reference on Angel the Series
Heartthrob
Angel "The woman I love is dead."
Angel again "No one ever mattered, not like she did."
For a 250 year old vampire- for nothing to matter to him like she did, means a hell of lot considering how long he has been alive.

Aug. 26 - Day 26: When would have been the best time for Buffy and Angel to renew their relationship? Or would you prefer they didn’t?

This isn't really a question of time so much as it's a question of circumstances. As long as he has the happiness clause, it simply wouldn't happen. So either they fix his curse or he Shanshues, and then the main obstacle between them is gone. I feel very strongly that it's insane and nonsensical that the characters never even raise the question of whether or not it's possible to fix Angel's curse in canon (and lazy or negligent on the part of the writers), but that could have happened at any point in either show (including before he left Sunnydale), and it could happen at any point afterward.

Or now that the prophecy has been fulfilled that Buffy would die but she was resurrected, they could find another Mohra demon to turn him human. And bonus! He would like ice cream again.

Aug. 26 - Day 26: When would have been the best time for Buffy and Angel to renew their relationship? Or would you prefer they didn’t?

If staying human wasn’t an option...

When Angel and Buffy met in between cities after her resurrection would have been a good time. Numerous FFs exist bringing them back together then and I think it’s the most realistic one, staying in character. Till that point both had grown so much and were at a point were they had seen it all and had established their characters. Buffy needed comfort/unconditional love but also somebody who understood her. I am sure Angel could have helped her through her - lost phase - without any graphic scenarios first hand.
Her death should have shown him what he really loses and he should have asked himself if he cannot bear being close to her and be in control of himself for a "few" more years compared to his long-lasting existence. BUT Willow's magic grew so big that it would've been easy to find a way around the loophole. Srsly if Spike found a demon ensoul him, there should be a possibility for Angel. That just doesn't make sense at all.

Day 26: When would have been the best time for Buffy and Angel to renew their relationship? Or would you prefer they didn’t?

I like a post-NFA reunion for B/A. I really liked the entirety of their journeys in canon and I think it makes sense for them to find their way back to each other after what we saw on screen. This is after both of them have had the biggest battle of their lives. And I also think there are great stories to tell of them getting to know how they have changed but also how much they have in common in their journeys since they have been apart.

Day 26: When would have been the best time for Buffy and Angel to renew their relationship? Or would you prefer they didn’t?

So, as a literature student, I am interested in how stories work. A common story structure is the classic "Hero's Journey," which usually includes three stages, i.e. the home-> away -> back home again structure aka. harmony -> chaos -> harmony aka. naivety -> development ->maturity. Buffy starts her story in a good relationship that breaks down. Then she has a relationship with Riley and Spike, who are both mirrors of Buffy, but they are cracked mirrors. Each of them embody only part of Buffy's personality, Spike being the romantic individualist and Riley being the responsible team player. I've always felt that the best way for Buffy's journey to end would be to reunite her with Angel, as he, like Buffy is a balanced character. Buffy and Angel both struggle to be the best version of themselves while they are apart. However, their time apart was necessary, because it has allowed them to explore their strengths and flaws.

So, IMO, Buffy and Angel should get back together after Chosen, which Chosen seems to suggest they will, but rather than go with my plan, the comics instead gives us a more rounded Spike, and then breaks them up right before the finish line. While the show has a nice structure to it, the comics feel rudderless and storylines just bounce back and forth like pinballs.

Like most of my critiques, this one hasn't proved particularly popular, but I keep on preaching, hoping someone will take an interest.

I agree with you wholeheartedly!
Day 26: When would have been the best time for Buffy and Angel to renew their relationship? Or would you prefer they didn’t ?

I must say that I am divided on whether or not I want Angel to become human. Part of me would like this to happen because for Angel it would be the ultimate reward, it would be the absolute redemption, he would finally be free from all the guilt he has been dragging with him for a while. It would be like a kind of eternal rest for him after all the fights and sacrifices he has done and of course the perspective of a human life with Buffy please me. But on the other hand, I'm not so sure that Angel will support his human condition, being weaker, less useful to the world, not being a champion, but just the man of the heroine that Buffy is and will always be. Can he bear not to help her if the situation demands it ? That's the question I'm asking myself. And honestly I do not know if I want a normal human relationship for Bangel, normality is sometimes so boring, Buffy and Angel are extraordinary people, out of the ordinary, their stories must be just as extraordinary and abnormal.

The other solution would be that Buffy become a vampire but I do not like this idea at all. Already I'm sure Angel does not want that for her and then it would be so unfair to Buffy.

So I do not know what is the best time for Bangel to resume, I just know that I do not really want to change the basics of the relationship. It's sure that after "Not fade away" Bangel would necessarily be different since Angel and Buffy themselves changed, but deep down I'm sure the relationship would be even more beautiful and deep than it has ever been . So a Buffy slayer and a vampire Angel, that's fine for me even if I know that with this configuration eternity is not possible and that for Buffy it means the sacrifice of a human life and all the benefits there are with it.

Aug. 24 - Day 24: Favorite Angel reference on Buffy the Vampire Slayer ?
Oooh so many!

#1: 'Flooded':

BUFFY: Angel.
GILES: Is he in trouble?
BUFFY: He knows that I'm ... He, he needs to see me. I have to see him.
GILES: Yes, of course. You'll leave for L.A. tomorrow.
BUFFY: Not L.A. And not here. Somewhere in the middle. There's a, a place.
GILES: I see. Well, we should get all these ... bills and things out of the way before-
BUFFY: I gotta go now.

I love the urgency here from them both.

Also in 'All the Way':

ANYA
I know. I'm the luckiest ex-demon in
the world. To be able to find the
one person in all dimensions that I
was meant to be with... and have
everything work out just the way I
dreamed. How often does the universe
allow that to happen?
She hugs Xander close, not seeing how her words have hit Buffy right in the Angel parallel.

And the more I think about it the more I really love:

Buffy : We don't destroy it.
Giles : Well, Buffy, any vampire that gets his hand on this is going to be essentially unkillable. (He looks at Buffy for a moment.) Oh.
Oz : I have that gig in LA. I could swing by.
Buffy : Thanks Oz.
Xander : What's going on. What's in LA?
Willow : She's giving the ring to Angel. Don't make a fuss.
Giles : Buffy are you sure.
Buffy : He should have it.

Aug. 26 - Day 26: When would have been the best time for Buffy and Angel to renew their relationship? Or would you prefer they didn’t?
Post-Chosen/NFA. They've both grown so much as individuals and been through so many experiences that I can really see them finding their way back to each other and rebuilding their relationship on new foundations. As Mrs Gordo says I think there's so much potential for new stories to be told about them progressing to the next chapter of their lives. Far from being boring, as some people claim, I think it would be really interesting to see how their more mature personalities both clash and (re)connect. Great drama-fodder there.

However, purely from a character-perspective, I think that S6/S3 might have been an emotionally beneficial time for them to reconnect. For Buffy, being able to confess her depression to Angel might have prevented her downward spiral and helped her recover faster. For Angel, the arrival of Connor was already causing him to think more about family and the future so it would have been interesting to how Buffy factored into that for him. (But saying all this I'm not sure how you would explore the sexual aspect of Buffy's S6 journey with Angel there)

I didn't notice the claddah ring.. Great reference
Aug. 26 - Day 26: When would have been the best time for Buffy and Angel to renew their relationship? Or would you prefer they didn’t?

Someone mentioned season 6, during her depressive period, and I think it would've been nice if Angel was with her in such a crucial time, and had been the calming patient understanding voice she needed to help the demons inside of her. Building her up, encouraging her best traits & helping to remind her all she's fought for, and what good can still be seen in life.

I'd have much rather seen that than what we ended up getting. If not there, perhaps a reconciliation in Chosen that sees them back together, but needed to split again to deal with the threats and Buffy possibly tying to move to LA with Dawn to try continuing her relationship with Angel, and this time, trying to find a cure for his curse so that Angelus is no longer an issue. But naturally, that's too happy Disney for Bangel. But I am a sucker for anything that would / could see them back together again.

Aug. 26 - Day 26: When would have been the best time for Buffy and Angel to renew their relationship?

I'm with those who prefer post-Chosen/NFA. They were already great together, but I think their relationship would be stronger for the time apart.

Aug. 27 - Day 27: Is there a particular quirk about Buffy and Angel’s relationship that you find endearing?

The "Buffy." / "Angel." greeting is incredibly endearing!

And I don't know if this is really a "quirk," but there's something about this hand-holding that gets me...

Quirk ? Not sure if I understand well this word. Is it a synonymous of strange ?

A quirk is basically something that is cute, weird, and unique about a person or situation (or, in this case, a couple).
Aug. 27 - Day 27: Is there a particular quirk about Buffy and Angel’s relationship that you find endearing?
How they can express so much with their eyes and looks much better than using words. It is like they don't need them. You don't see that with other couples.

Aug. 27 - Day 27: Is there a particular quirk about Buffy and Angel’s relationship that you find endearing?

I would say the way they say each others names when they meet. But I don't remember if that's a FF thing or a real series thing as well. I am just too tired to rewatch their greetings right now. Maybe you can help?

Thanks Taaroko for the clarification.

How Buffy can feel that Angel is here without really knowing it.

I love all the things you guys have said—the saying each other's names instead of "hello" thing and the soulful gazes in particular—but another one I love is the way they walk in lockstep. Particularly impressive given their major height difference, and it's such a subtle way of showing how in sync they are.
