(New) 30 Days of Bangel

Aug. 17 - Day 17: Have you created a Bangel fanwork of any kind (vid, icon, banner, fic, meta, gifset, etc.) that you love?

I think most of y'all have read it (and I very much appreciate that!), but I'll say Another Minute. It's the most Bangely thing I've written, and I hope that it captures a little bit of why I love Buffy/Angel so much.

I've made several fanvids and written several fanfics. My favourite fanfic of my own atm is the most recent. It is called The One Where Angel and Buffy Never Met and Never Fell in Love, and is a fairly short bit of fluff. It is meant to say something about essentialism and consistency. Like Embers in Rain is a much longer, much weirder story that is still unfinished and includes several other ships, such as Spike/Dru, Will/Ken and Andrew/Original character. Read the last one at your own peril, because it is my indulging all my worst vices as a writer.

I've made my first Bangel-fanvid 9 years ago and still love doing it. It is very relaxing and I can indulge in editing and practically rewatch at the same time and listen to music.
As I don't have a vid that I love the most, I linked you my playlist. Fell free to watch some.

I taught myself "close your eyes" on a keyboard ages ago. I am very musically-untalented and a lefty. Still, despite the mistakes I am proud that my brain was able to transmit the sequences of notes to my hands.

Oh boy have I. Buffy/Angel fanworks have been a not-insignificant chunk of my entire adult life. But probably the one out of all 600k+ words of fanfiction and dozens of manips/fanart that filled me with the most glee during the creative process was "Dancing with Death," my film noir style '20s NYC AU with Angel taking the place of your typical Humphrey Bogart character (and no, it's not an all-human AU, it's just the Buffyverse set in a different decade). I did a ton of research on what '20s NYC looked like, the slang, the technology, the culture, the politics, etc. to nail down the tone and atmosphere, and it was ridiculously fun to do. I even flexed my much atrophied first person muscles, because as much as I usually dislike first person, it's an integral component of film noir, and even that part of writing it ended up being a lot of fun. Angel makes a great cynical narrator.

I just read this fic for the first time this weekend and I enjoyed it so much!!!
Day 17

(I skipped a few because I have to go back to work now that summer is over. boo.)

I wrote Escape Velocity as my first Bangel fic. I am editing another one now for the IWRY marathon coming up. I love how many great fics and other fanworks there are in this fandom. Still very active with great authors and artists!

Loved Escape Velocity! Can’t wait for your next story!

I write stories and I made a vid but I haven’t produced anything in those to mediums that I’m 100% satisfied with. I guess this banner I made with the lyrics from Buffering is pretty cool:

Aug. 18 - Day 18: Favorite Bangel dream sequence?
For sure, the Amends sex scene.

I am currently reading your stories and I like your writing style - a LOT.
Aug. 12 - Day 12: Why do you think Angel is a good fit for Buffy?
So many reasons. Initially Angel was the only person who could truly identify with her loneliness and her feeling of straddling two worlds but never being a part of either.
Later on during their relationship he provided patience, understanding, comfort. Angel is a good listener and he was always there to hear out her problems and worries and provide advice or reassurance when she needed it. He was her place of safety; as someone outside her friend-circle, Buffy could go to him with worries that she couldn't express to anyone else and he could offer a perspective with the little wisdom he had from experience. Later on, and as they have grown as individuals, I think he's become even better fit for her as their journeys have paralleled each other's. They're both stronger, wiser, more sober after having to fight so hard and experiencing the loss of loved ones, and coming back from the depths of despair. As a vampire he obviously has the strength and skill to fight by her side as a partner and equal. I also think Angel is one of the few people - maybe the only person? - in whose presence Buffy completely relaxes. WIth him she opens up more and her body language eases.

Aug. 13 - Day 13: Why do you think Buffy is a good fit for Angel?
First of all she's his inspiration. It was seeing her, and empathising with her situation which motivated Angel to get out of the gutter and finally make something of himself. Her humanity, warmth and heart is a shining light for him, something to aspire to; as he says to Faith, until he came to Sunnydale he thought people only existed to hurt each other. Equally Buffy sees humanity in him too. She helps him not hate himself and I think Buffy putting her trust in him early on encourages him to grow more confident and sure of his purpose in helping her. Then of course she basically provides him with his mission statement for the rest of his life.

I've seen some people say that Buffy and Angel wouldn't be good for each other because they're too similar - both leaders who naturally take charge and have a tendency to retreat into themselves when anxious or depressed but I disagree. I think they each have enough opposing differences in their personalities to acually counteract each other's inward tendencies. Buffy tends to be less guarded and tense in Angel's presence so his quiet solidity actually gives her space to breathe and open up aout her issues in her own time. Equally I think the brighter more energetic aspects of Buffy's personality help Angel to come out of his shell a bit. He smiles around her and can even crack a dry joke every once in a while.

Aug. 14 - Day 14: Favorite season for Bangel post-BtVS Season 3?
S4/S1

Aug. 15 - Day 15: If you were going to pick any Bangely episode to watch right now, what would it be?
'What's my Line' (can I cheat and pick both parts?)

Aug. 16 - Day 16: Favorite moment of physical affection (hug, kiss, hand-holding, etc.)
Oh this one's cruel! How am I supposed to pick just one? I'm a sucker for Bangel 'hands' and 'foreheads' moments and since @Grace has taken the best hand-holding one, I'm choosing the WML one for it's significance and the look of surprise on Angel's face at realising no-one's ever touched him like that:

Though I have to say if we're talking touches this bit ticks so many boxes for me: foreheads touching, noses pressed, hands cupping each other's face, big smoochies. I just love how they're always so effortlessly tactile with each other. (Of course this is all a lie. I don't have a favourite since I'm physically incapable of choosing just one as they're all so goddamn beautiful).

There's one other I want to point out because it's so brief that it's hard to catch - though I'm sure some of you will have spotted it:

If you look carefully you can see he kisses her hand just before he drops a kiss on the top of her head and I don't know why but I absolutely love it, even though it's not necessarily my favourite. I think maybe because it's such tiny little thing and looks so natural that it feels like it could very well have just come from the actors themselves rather than any kind of direction.

Not yet but it's in the works! 😉 In the meantime I'm just linking the IWRY archive - go gorge on the plentiful B/A goodies: IWRY Marathon Years List

Aug. 18-Day 18 Favorite Bangel dream sequence
Amends dream-sex. No contest.

oooh I forgot about the little hand kiss in Surprise. I love those soft subtle little moments of tenderness :)
Aug. 18-Day 18 Favorite Bangel dream sequence

WEDDING

Despite the horrifying nightmare ending, that dream sequence has been extremely useful to the entire Buffy/Angel fandom for vids and manips and stuff. No matter what the context was, we got an onscreen wedding. That's awesome.

Aug. 19 - Day 19: Favorite “I love you” (or romantic declaration in general)

"In all those years, no one ever mattered like she did."
"I loved Angel more than I will ever love anything in this life."

I love that they talk like this about each other to their friends, years later.

Aug. 19 - Day 19: Favorite “I love you” (or romantic declaration in general)

I love that we have so many options to chose from! They declare their love for one another to each other and to others quite often. I’d say it’s hard for me not to choose Buffy’s Selfless speech in which she unequivocally puts to rest all of those who say what Buffy and Angel had was just mere “puppy” love or some diminutive description like that. But ultimately I’m a sucker for the first time Angel says it here:

tumblr_p9dvxr6P9l1xpfeglo8_400.gif

There is a vulnerability in Angel finally admitting his feelings, after fighting them, after we saw him try and fail to tell her at the docks. It is the first time he has ever been in love and this is new to him. And when DB delivers this line, his voice hitches at the end when he says “stop” so the delivery of the line just oozes with authenticity. It’s such a perfectly intimate moment. It’s framed so lovely. And it’s iconic! So many beautiful declarations come later but this first one is very special and it is certainly a favorite.

Aug. 19 - Day 19: Favorite “I love you” (or romantic declaration in general)

I gotta go with the first ones in Surprise. It was just such a tender moment, and a new step for both where they could say that. Plus Angel said it first, which was a good change from Buffy usually being the more forward one.

But that's tied with Buffy saying she loved Angel more than she ever eould anything. She was an adult there, and had gone through a 2 relationships, one with a lot of abuse. She'd experienced death, rebirth & raising a kid. And she still describes what she felt for Angel as real & deep. Debunking the HS puppy love argument.

Aug. 19 - Day 19: Favorite “I love you” (or romantic declaration in general)

" I would have given up everything I had to be with - I loved him more than I will ever love anything in this life. "

Aug. 20 - Day 20: Favorite episode/scene that showcases Buffy and Angel’s ability to work as a team?

Becoming part 2 when Buffy put a sword through his heart.
„Yeah, but I made her do it. I signaled her with my eyes.“
Just Kidding 😀😉

I go with Enemies (of course 🙄). They played Faith and the Scoobies very well and got all of the information they needed.

(off topic: @Mrs Gordo I caught up with the comics and I am thrilled for the last two issues. I couldn't sleep last night and in the morning I overtexted my hubby and kids at the breakfast table.)

Aug. 20 - Day 20: Favorite episode/scene that showcases Buffy and Angel’s ability to work as a team?

I'm going with Choices. Nothing is more entertaining than a Mission Impossible that goes wrong but at the end you still get the object you came for because you can perfectly throw a ball (or box) around while beating up bad guys together.
