(New) 30 Days of Bangel

Aug. 28 - Day 28: Favorite Bangel headcanon?

I'd love to think Buffy remembered IWRY after her resurrection.
And I also imagine the meeting in between cities was quite physical, because of the ice cream reference and her "it was intense"-statement.

But I do have my very own Bangel headcanon - kind of my own bangel/buffyverse - were Angel stayed human and opened up AI with Cordy and Doyle/Wes in Sunnyhell. Because there are enough dark forces and demons in Sunnydale for everybody. When I feel down or need a bit time on my own and don't feel like reading or sth else, I kinda flee in my own version and imagine various stories in that timeline. I do that while shopping, bringing the kids to the kindergarten, before going to sleep, while cooking etc. - I have years of practicing multitasking behind me. If I would be good in writing and all that, I would have written my own mega FF, but I am not and so it all stays in my mind and delights me.

Day 27:
My favorite quirk of theirs is how Buffy touches Angel's lips. She does it when kissing frequently, and a few other times. I giffed it because I love it so much. Such a small intimate thing that builds the chemistry and gives this sense of reverence to their scenes.

Day 28:
Headcannon would be that Buffy and Angel both have little momento boxes from their relationships. Angel keeps his clauddagh ring, Buffy's photo, tickets from night time movie dates. Buffy has her cross necklace, the poetry book, one of Angel's shirts. I think they both treasured their relationship so much as they intellectually knew it couldn't be permanent. So, they kept phyiscal reminders of what once was.

Aug. 28 - Day 28: Favorite Bangel headcanon?

I have so many! I'll just pick a few to share:
  • Angel had a nightmare in Nightmares (the S1 ep) about turning Buffy and that is why she's a vampire. This is based on reading Wish Your Heart Makes by Viola Claire.
  • Angel wears his Claddagh ring in Judgment (the S2 opener) because the Shanshu prophecy has made him hopeful about someday being with Buffy again. Based on @Taaroko's post here.
  • Angel and Buffy communicated in some way about the Gem of Amara. He sent her a letter or they talked on the phone or something. But it didn't go unacknowledged between them.
  • Buffy and Angel went skating again together at some point, as in @Kairos' Pair Skating.

I love all of these.

And I wonder if they talked about Connor as well. What do you think?
Aug. 28 - Day 28 : Favorite Bangel headcanon ?

I know that I have said that I won't answer to this question but finally an idea came to my mind. Angel should have been affected by chocolate in "Band Candy" and behave like Liam the teenager he was in his day. It could have been funny that Buffy discovered him in this new light.
Of course we should rewrite the episode a bit since scoobies do not know that Angel is alive at that time. Either they are all under the spell and forget everything when they recover their minds or they do not meet Angel but that it seems to me to be big lol. And we need an excuse for Angel to eat chocolate

Aug. 29 - Day 29: Do you relate more to Buffy or to Angel ?

More like Angel because :

I'm often funny despite me

I like reading I have a preference for stories that are a bit dark and mysterious. Thoses days, I'm reading "Miserables" from Victor Hugo

I'm like Angel. Angel is only more brave than me.

I'm writing a Band Candy where Angel eats the chocolate for the IWRY marathon in November! My reason for him to eat the chocolate is a little flimsy, but hey, it would be too funny for him to act like a teenager not to.
Day 28 ~ Favorite Bangel Headcanon?
It is more like the lack of headcanon, but I love that even though they were no longer able to do crossovers after the move to UPN, the writers still had Buffy and Angel go see each other after she comes back in Season 6. And I love how when they return, they both separately request privacy about what happened between them, and how the show then respects that request. The sole Buffy comic that I own is "Reunion", written by Jane Espenson, which has Xander, Anya, and Dawn speculating about what happened, but even the comic ultimately respects their requests for privacy. I feel like they have both more than earned the right to it, so I am more than happy to give it to them.

Aug. 29 - Day 29: Do you relate more to Buffy or to Angel?

I have traits from both characters. There's Angel's introvert / withdrawn nature. I prefer keeping to myself a lot of the time. I guess Angel is my answer. But like I stated before, the BTVS character I am closest to is Jonathan. Sad as that is.

Aug. 29 - Day 29: Do you relate more to Buffy or to Angel?

It's kind of a strange question. Buffy is my Buffyverse avatar character, but I'm really not a lot like her aside from being blonde and female. I used to loathe "Witch" because my avatar character was a cheerleader and I loathe cheerleaders, so that was tainting her for me. (I have since come to appreciate how awesome that episode is.) I've always had a really hard time forming an opinion of Buffy because she's my lens through which to view everything else. And then there's Angel, with whom I deeply sympathize, who is one of my favorite characters ever, and who is an introvert like me, but whose experiences are obviously very different from mine—except when he's forced into social situations he didn't want to be in. So I'm really not sure which of them wins.

Aug. 29 - Day 29: Do you relate more to Buffy or to Angel?

I was drawn to the Angel character a lot due to his preferring to be alone. I am more like Angel than Buffy. I 'd rather be alone pretty much of the time. Plus Angel likes to read a lot which is what I do every chance I get. I always was a bookworm and still am. Curling up with a good book is how I prefer to pass the time.

Aug. 29 - Day 29: Do you relate more to Buffy or to Angel?

Buffy is definitely not my favourite character, but I relate more to her. She is a strong woman, knows what she wants and she pulls through no matter what. She loved her soulmate wholeheartedly and is always loyal to her closest friends. She makes mistakes and has downs as well, but eventually she will be right back on track and overcome her issues. She is a leader and my role model. I grew up with her and especially Bangel's love for another shaped my character in romance and loyalty.
As Buffy said: "At some point someone has to draw the line and that is always going to be me." - I often need to make major decisions for my family when nobody wants to. My mom was a fulltime working single mom for years and I grew up being indipendent and pull through. You can do everything in the world, if you want to. ( I moved to a different country once for 2 years, didn't speak the language - I even was alone in Nepal for 2 months and did bungee jumping - I am a bit proud : - D )
In her highschool years Buffy was an outsider - a bit strange. Well, I wasn't slaying any vamps or demons, but yep.. I can relate.
However a big difference is, she sees good in most people - I clearly don't. I am highly sceptical towards people and choose my friends very cautious. A person hurts or disappoints me once, will not get a second chance and can go to hell *whoopsy

Aug. 29 - Day 29: Do you relate more to Buffy or to Angel?
Now, I don't really have much at all in common with either of them. Buffy and I are both blondes, but one of us is a real blonde and one of us is not (meow!). One quirk that I share with Buffy is that we are both babblers who tend to speak in real-time-sync with our thought process.

That being said, I have a tremendous amount of love for both of these characters. They are my favourite characters of their respective shows by far (perhaps bar Willow). I can't remember a single moment where I don't feel as though I get Buffy. She may surprise me, but never confuse me. I mostly feel as though I get Angel, but not always and he is much further removed from me personality-wise than Buffy. I guess it helps that Buffy, aside from her monster-slaying, leads a normal life and has recognisable experiences. Also, in relation to Bangel, I don't feel Angel really comes alive as a separate character until S3 of BtVS.

I do the real-time-sync with thought process speak thing too... it can be bad!
  • Aug. 30 - Day 30: Why do you think the Buffy/Angel relationship became iconic in pop culture ?

Last day. Everything has an end...

To quote Joss Whedon : "Buffy/Angel is the grandest love story I will ever tell" Bangel is iconic in pop culture because no one is like them. They tried to copy them but nothing is better than the authenticity ! They tried to draw inspiration from them and we only take examples from the best !

Day 28: Favorite Bangel headcanon

That in s3, Angel would make breakfast for Buffy on those nights when she would stay over after a late night of slaying.

Aug. 29 - Day 29: Do you relate more to Buffy or to Angel?

Buffy. I certainly have been through times in my life when Angel felt very relatable, but for the most part, I am kinda like Buffy some ways. As @WillowFromBuffy mentioned I also have that habit of basically saying the first thing that comes to my mind even if it's absurd or outlandish. And sometimes it makes me sound dumb. Like Buffy I'm a bit insecure, I used to have a bit of a jealous streak, I have a much younger sister and know a thing or two about that dynamic as well. I had some similar boy issues as Buffy did on the show. Oh... I also tried out for cheer my Freshman year and didn't make it. But in my case, it's because I couldn't tumble not because of some magical spell thingy. 😀 When I was in college I related to Buffy s6 story. And as I get older I still relate to her in different ways. Of course, although I see similarities, Buffy is a much braver and heroic person and I admire her for both her strength and her vulnerability.

Aug. 30 - Day 30: Why do you think the Buffy/Angel relationship became iconic in pop culture ?

Loads of people love the Beauty and the Biest and for me Bangel come close. The Beast behaved cruel and is supposed to exist in darkness and aby. But there comes the Beauty, a rebellish girl, a heroine in her own way, facing up danger. The Beauty and the Biest fall in love. Although the Biest isn’t socialised anymore, temperamentally and a freak so to say, she loves him beyond borders. She is his salvation.

Additional they were the first popular vampire/human couple. And as far as I know (cause I boycott any other vampire shows) there were/are some tv shows now (Twilight, Vampire Diaries) and they all got hyped by their own target audience. So it is the mystery/danger/forbidden love that attracts people.

Aug. 30 - Day 30: Why do you think the Buffy/Angel relationship became iconic in pop culture?
Because it follows a trope. It is a cliche. It is easily digestible by the larger population. To become iconic, you play upon the archetypes that already exists within culture. You have a beautiful young girl and a beastly boy, whose beastliness represents both the terror and mystical appeal of a young person's burgeoning sexuality. It is a story that has been told a million times before. It is a story that everyone knows. You can show any dofus a five minute clip of BtVS, and they will immediately get Bangel.

As always though, the devil is in the details, and that is also where you find true beauty. Sometimes, even when we see a story portrayed for the nth time, we find that it suddenly clicks in a way that it hasn't done before, or that it hasn't done since we were younger and heard the story for the first time. Then we need to ask ourselves: What is different, why does this resonate more strongly, and why does this feel oddly fresh?

Was it the sonic inventions of Strawberry Fields Forever or the existentialist angst of Nowhere Man that made the Beatles iconic in the US? No, it was a two and a half minute song about hand holding on a cheap variety show.

So, rather than ask what made Bangel or BtVS iconic, I think it is more interesting to know what created the cult of continued interest. What was it about the brazen young girl and her broody vampire that grabbed some people's interest between its fangs and held on to it for so many years?

Aug. 30 - Day 30: Why do you think the Buffy/Angel relationship became iconic in pop culture?

1. Because David x Sarah wwere both HOT with amazing chemistry. More than just characters & writing. The actors have to pull,it off to make you feel for them.

Then there's the forbidden love aspect. It never gets old. Especially for a relatively new concept of a vamp & slayer falling for each other, anf said vamp is the only one yo ever have a soul.

Aug. 30 - Day 30: Why do you think the Buffy/Angel relationship became iconic in pop culture?

Both SMG and DB suspended the disbelief in portraying characters that love each other. That these two characters love each other when they should be enemies. The odds are stacked against Bangel, which makes you root for them. That they can't be together, which makes them want to be together even more. People relate to that, because in their own lives they have fallen in love with someone that they couldn't have.

Aug. 30 - Day 30: Why do you think the Buffy/Angel relationship became iconic in pop culture?

I think a big part of it is Sarah and David's chemistry. I've never seen another pair pull off star-crossed longing as compellingly or convincingly as them.
