Many reason why Joss might have refused...

* He's just not interested in doing a Buffy movie without his cast

* He has no free time to work on it

* He doesn't want to work with the Kuzuis again

* He doesn't want to jeopardize his relationship with Fox by participating in a Buffy franchise that competes with their own (especially if there's legal action being planned)

* He's simply not interested in the premise of this movie

I couldn't say how Joss really feels about this movie. My guess is it doesn't make him happy, but he doesn't lie in bed at night crying about it either. I think he was resigned to the idea that his Buffy was only going to continue in comics form, and this does nothing to change that.

I imagine it's a bit galling that these people are waltzing in out of nowhere and doing a Buffy movie, while he couldn't get the time of day from the studios for the past 6 years to do one of his own.

I think there's 2 reasons he doesn't want to do it.

1.It's a remake not a continuation.

And

2.What Andrew pointed out about him not wanting to work with the Kuzuis again.

I'd love one of those writers too. I also think Doug Petrie was a great writer. But yeah, this seems like the chance Joss should take, he may not get another, and if he wants Marsters and Giles etc in it times running out.

* He's just not interested in doing a Buffy movie without his cast

And how would he know that this isn't possible without speaking to the Kazuis?
In fact I would think that them wishing to use Joss would mean they wanted his verse which opens up the use of his cast.

* He has no free time to work on it
How would he know as he didn't talk to them so doesn't know what time frame they are looking at to see if he could juggle it.

* He doesn't want to work with the Kuzuis again
This is probable, but he has shown that he doesn't mind working with Fox and they have screwed him a couple of times too.

* He doesn't want to jeopardize his relationship with Fox by participating in a Buffy franchise that competes with their own (especially if there's legal action being planned)
Constantly saying this doesn't make it an actual point.

* He's simply not interested in the premise of this movie
By bringing Joss on board, they open it up to him having a say in the premise of the movie.

They aren't 'waltzing in out of nowhere' considering they gave the entire Buffyverse the start it needed to be where it is now.

The fact is, he could get the time of day now, if he collaborate with the Kazuis, but he isn't going to.

Just because some TV shows transfer to the big screen immediately, doesn't mean its easy for all.

Buffy has at least 7 years of TV show plus a further 5 of Angel, means that a continuation movie is going to be a very niche market - thats why he should have done the TVM's when he had the chance, but he passed it off to David Greenwalt and that seemed to have pissed of the people who wanted to let him make the movies (remember how sure Amy Acker was that they were to be made).

I would wager Joss wasn't as interested in making a movie as he let the fans think because he wanted to do other stuff (in the same way SMG didn't exactly want to reprise Buffy), which again is fair, but just because he isn't interested doesn't mean there shouldn't be something made.

I don't think Joss should do the movie, I know there's no chance of that, but I don't think would even be concidered. Joss has made a story from the original Movie, He's gotten pretty much all the fans he can from it, (Yes there are new people watching the show all the time, but I mean on a large scale)

If they want to go and make something from the original Buffy, and they don't want to make it for the fans, they want to try and generate a new fan base, why not.

Just because they make something else from it, doesn't effect our Buffy.

I would totally go see it, it will probably be bad, but I'll still go see it.

And how would he know that this isn't possible without speaking to the Kazuis?

Fox owns everything having to do with the TV show. Joss doesn't. Besides, Vertigo and the Kuzuis want a franchise they can own and keep all the profits from. Any movie based on the Fox Buffyverse would ultimately belong to Fox, not them.

How would he know as he didn't talk to them so doesn't know what time frame they are looking at to see if he could juggle it.

The producers have said the script is already being written, or at least outlined. Considering all he has on his plate now (running a TV series, doing a feature, producing a major comics series, and who knows what else), dropping everything to write a feature film right now probably wouldn't be realistic.

Constantly saying this doesn't make it an actual point.

What point needs to be made? Unless Vertigo signs a deal with Fox, their two Buffy franchises will be in competition with each other.

They aren't 'waltzing in out of nowhere' considering they gave the entire Buffyverse the start it needed to be where it is now.

I guess that's right in a way... they screwed up the movie so badly that Joss could afford to buy the then-worthless TV rights from them.

I would define "waltzing out of nowhere" as jumping in to claim the rights to a character they bankrolled 17 years ago, after she acquired value through the efforts of other people. Much like parents showing up and claiming custody of a child they abandoned years ago.

The fact is, he could get the time of day now, if he collaborate with the Kazuis, but he isn't going to.

What you say may be true, but the point remains it must be galling that the Kuzuis can get a movie off the ground where he couldn't, despite his work being the reason Buffy has any value at all.

I would wager Joss wasn't as interested in making a movie as he let the fans think because he wanted to do other stuff (in the same way SMG didn't exactly want to reprise Buffy), which again is fair, but just because he isn't interested doesn't mean there shouldn't be something made.

I'm fairly sure that if he could have gotten SMG on board, he could have at least gotten a TVM off the ground, even if it didn't necessarily have the budget he'd like. I think he genuinely wanted to do a movie, but her holdout (and possibly that of other key cast members? I don't know) made that irrelevant.

I think JW now sees Buffy as a creative outlet rather than necessarily a big source of income. That's why he can just shrug off this movie. I'm sure he'll continue telling Buffy's story as long as he has a story to tell, regardless of how many people are listening. I know I'll always be there.

Ugh As much as more Buffyverse would be good... If this is going to be like the other movie, plus with none of the characters we all love.. *groans*

And you have no evidence to suggest Fox haven't been approached.
It wouldn't take a genius to work out that they would contact Fox.
You're closing doors for them before you know anything that has actually happened.
What actual, verifiable, 100% accurate information do we have about this movie?

Being written - thats not anywhere close to them saying its on on the lot being filmed.
Movie scripts are notorious for having many re-writes, sometimes even during the filming.

On top of that there are film makers out there that work on more over a 3-4 year stint than 'running a TV series, doing a feature and producing a major comic series', and lets not forget they are aiming for a 2012 release, but at such an early stage of development that could easily move a year or two.

What point needs to be made? Unless Vertigo signs a deal with Fox, their two Buffy franchises will be in competition with each other.
The point is you are hypothesising something that hasn't occurred. You're saying that there will be this issue as it will be actual fact - when in essence who can say what will happen.
Because it happened to Watchmen doesn't mean it will happen here. On the contrary, lets assume Fox doesn't want to be involved, the Kazuis will know that there might be an issue so they might have a proposal in the offing that Fox might want.
But thats speculation, just like what you are suggesting is.
I guess I could constantly state that the Kazuis are going to offer Fox something, but then I don't know so why would I say that?

I guess that's right in a way... they screwed up the movie so badly that Joss could afford to buy the then-worthless TV rights from them.

I would define "waltzing out of nowhere" as jumping in to claim the rights to a character they bankrolled 17 years ago, after she acquired value through the efforts of other people. Much like parents showing up and claiming custody of a child they abandoned years ago.
And those parents still have rights, even in a diminished capacity.

It also depends on the definition of 'screwed up' because I really liked the movie. The problem I have with that movie is the problem I have with most, I don't think 1.5 hours is long enough to tell a decent story so all the characters get decent depth - doesn't mean the movie was bad.

We here have the benefit of hind sight and comparison.

What you say may be true, but the point remains it must be galling that the Kuzuis can get a movie off the ground where he couldn't, despite his work being the reason Buffy has any value at all.

Of course its true - he was contacted to be part of something that is going ahead.
I don't believe he has tried that hard to get the movie off the ground, there would have been some interest.

And, as I said, the bit of evidence we do have that he could have at least had TV Movies, well he didn't seem too interested in that and passed it on to someone else.

This is obviously assumption. I'm fairly sure that he didn't want to do a Buffy related movie because he wanted to do other things and since that fell through he has had to change his tack.

I think JW now sees Buffy as a creative outlet rather than necessarily a big source of income. That's why he can just shrug off this movie. I'm sure he'll continue telling Buffy's story as long as he has a story to tell, regardless of how many people are listening. I know I'll always be there.

Again, I think Joss Whedon sees Buffy as a way to keep his fans around.

How many people on this forum alone stated during Dollhouse that had it not been for Joss Whedon they would have left the show after a couple of episodes and they stuck with it because they were waiting for him?

I don't believe Joss really wanted to continue in the Buffyverse, but he is intelligent enough to give a little to keep the fans hanging on.

I would like to know how many of the people who watched Dollhouse were already 'fans' of him or Buffy.

I really don't like the idea of a Joss-less Buffy movie. I don't like that fact that people other than him own the rights to Buffy at all. That part just really makes me angry. However, I probably will see it out of curiosity and just hope that maybe if we all go see it that it'll show how many people are interested in a Buffy movie. The way I figure it is if we all go see it and it is really popular, then maybe Joss will reunite the cast for a proper post-series film. We can only hope.

Don't let that get your hopes OR your blood pressure up. The script for Edgar Rice Burroughs' "A Princess Of Mars," one of my all time favorite books AND series, has been "being written" for the last ten years that I know of, and probably well before that. "Being written" usually just means that someone is thinking about coming up with an idea that they can outline, then find a writer somewhere willing to write a script based on that outline. If that's all that they've got, my granddaughter may be able to see the finished movie while she's in college.

Let's not forget that it's not like they did the original movie and then haven't been involved in the show since...

They weren't involved in the show at all. Their involvement consisted of a production credit and a paycheck, both as a result of contractual obligation. I doubt very much they even spoke to Joss during that entire time. He bought the TV rights from them, free and clear.

Many reason why Joss might have refused...

* He's just not interested in doing a Buffy movie without his cast

* He has no free time to work on it

* He doesn't want to jeopardize his relationship with Fox by participating in a Buffy franchise that competes with their own (especially if there's legal action being planned)

* He's simply not interested in the premise of this movie

* He doesn't want it to overshadow Season 8.

@Buffy: Maybe that helps reinforce the idea that he's not interested in movies. I mean we can all see how motivated he is to make Ripper.

Naw, sorry, my point there was that the Kuzui's own the rights to movies and if he was interested in making a movie he shoulda woulda coulda bought those rights as well.

🙂

I think the most frustrating of all this is the fact that, us fans have wanted MORE of Buffy (whether a S8 or direct to dvd movie, tv movie) and it really hasn't been talked about UNTIL this whole "vampire trend". They figure all the teens/preteens out there fawining over Twilight will be ready and willing to spend $$ on the new Buffy. If it was really about the fans and the Buffy franchise, Joss would be involved as well as the rest of/most of the cast.

I will be curious to see what happens with this, though I don't think I'd like a new Buffy. I think I'd rather see them come up with a new slayer for a new generation.

I'd also like a new slayer story to be told

That would be preferable...
What story could Joss tell?

He has an hour and a half movie, in which time he would have to introduce ALL the characters from the show he plans to use, he would have to give them all decent enough character information to not make them 2d, he would have to explain at least some of what has gone on over the 7 years of Buffy and 5 years of Angel as well as having a decent story going on to tie it all up and have the big showdown at the end.

How does he do ALL that in one movie to appease hard core fans (who don't really want that because they already know ALL this because they took the time to watch Buffy)?

The general population need that movie but its too soon for that.

The movie everyone on this forum wants can never be made because its too big a thing.
There was a chance with the DDVD/DVDM/TVM but Joss wasn't having any of it, and now its probably too late.

A Buffy continuation in any form other than the comics is not gonna happen.

All there will ever be able to be is a retool/reboot and Joss has already told his story, so why do we want that again?
