New Buffy Reboot Discussion #4

It would be really cool if the first half of the movie was kind of set up introducing Buffy, Giles, Willow and Xander, and Angel all lurky in the shadows watching over Buffy. And then Spike turns up on a mission to kill another slayer. Kind of amalgamating season 1 and the first half of 2. That would be epic I rekcon...Spikes such a brilliant villian when hes all energy and hate and violence, would work very well on a big screen.

I will hate it at first. I will walk to that cinema muttering curses and frowning at the posters, but when the movie is done I'll probably think it was a pretty decent reboot.

There is only one Buffy though.

Perhaps if this movie is a success Joss will get some inspiration to get his fat ass right on writing more seasons for Buffy or making a new Buffyverse TV-show. Though another Firefly season would be nice too...

Lots of food for thought...this is a tough one...it really is.

I'm not sure Buffy fans are ready for a reboot UNLESS it's handled respectfully...

Are you personally ready to accept new actors playing your favourite characters...? For instance look at the voices in the motion comic for season 8...they did not go down well at all...now imagine completely new faces too...would they be viewed as impostors by the original fan community...?

WHERE would they look for these actors? Would they look at say, the cast of programs like Victorious or iCarly? Or would they go with virtual unknowns...???

Is it perhaps too SOON to think of reboot...????

Twilight has been this generations Buffy for a lot of young girls...yet Buffy is SO much BETTER! Do you think the next generation of teens are ready to enter the Buffyverse...???

I'm personally thinking that in another 5-8yrs it will be the right time to bring Buffy back...by that stage you will win 2 new generations worth of fans - the teens and people in their early to middle 20's...PLUS if it's done properly they will probably win back at least 80% of the original Buffy fandom, who admittedly will then be in their 30's - 50's!!

This would work much in the way of the new Doctor Who series...you have classic Doctor Who fans now watching the new series with their kids, who are fans of the current Doctor/s and episodes...

Also what about the idea of bringing in some of the original actors and recasting them for the reboot...personally, I would love to say see Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy's mom, or Anthony Steward Head as the principal or even James Marsters as Giles...WHO would you get to play Giles anyway...???

I'm not saying bring in the entire original cast and recast them as different characters in the revamp, but surely Buffy herself (!SMG!) would be a must for a cameo appearance at the very least...this is quite the in thing to do today in hollywood remakes, so why not??

AND what shape should the reboot take? Should they make a new television series or a trilogy of big budget feature films?

I just hope it's set during the Buffter's years at Sunnydale...

I think my idea would save alot of anger and arguements. It is so simple, they would still get to use the Buffy franchise without using Joss, Sarah Michelle Gellar can still have a cameo if she wants, but it wouldn't seem missed if she passed..... So here goes:

At the end of season 7 they used the power of the scythe (which i thought looked like an axe and nothing like a scythe), and gave every single potential in the world the power of a slayer.... so..... if they kept that story going they would be able to create a NEW slayer. That way they would have the freedom to pick ANY actress they wanted, create ANY friends they wanted, with ANY storylines they wanted. It is still attached to the Buffy plot AND they don't have to worry about our bias getting in the way of us enjoying the movie. They double their fanbase instantly and create less headache while trying to figure out how to write/direct/cast/film the movie.

It would be a no brainer for me if I was in charge.

Yeah I always thought the same!

My thoughts exactly. I've mentioned Taissa Farmiga would be my choice for the role of the slayer.
In all honesty, I hope they don't go ahead with it.

For one, it won't be the same series I remember. I don't think any actress other than Sarah Michelle Gellar can play Buffy; she's made the character her own, and I can't see anyone else in the role. Same with all the other characters.

Also, the whole reason for making the movie could be to cash in on the Twilight fad, and I do not want to see Buffy become a horrible Twilight clone.

Well... if they do decide to go ahead with it I just thought of something. Now I haven't read through all of the threads on this subject so I hope I'm not repeating somebody else's comment. But while casting the main Scoobies would be quite a task, I think I have the perfect person to play Spike... What do you all think of Tom Felton? Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter.

- he is British so the accent doesn't have to be faked.
- he has played a villian for years. With great charisma.
- he has already rocked the slicked back blonde hair look.
- has proved he can act.
- he is in his twenties now so right on target for the part.

The role was pretty much made for him I think.

omg, you just named the one actor I'd actually like as Spike

This! So much! :D
Well a reboot couldn't include Spike, or an of the scoobies unless Joss was doing it. The reboot people only have the rights to Buffy and the movies characters.

I believe 20th Century Fox has the rights to all the characters from the series, not Joss himself.

Yeah sorry shouldn't have said Joss, 20th Century Fox own the scoobies. But Warner Bros only optioned the rights from the Kuzuis, they only own the rights for the original movie, so the scoobies don't come with that package.

So then technically we have nothing to worry about. There is no way they can ruin a story they don't have access to. I might actually go see this movie now............ if it ever gets made.

Yeah exactly, thats why I've never seen an issue with the reboot. It wouldn't be a continuation or prequel. It can't change the BtVS TV show story in anyway, it's a reboot of the original movie not the TV show (Which you have to admire everyone being so annoyed at a reboot of a reboot).

It's hard to say whether or not I'd want a reboot. I would watch it, without a doubt...though possibly out of curiousity. And I'd try to enjoy it. So I suppose it would just depend on the delivery of it all.

Just gonna throw my never-gonna-happen wish into the ring - if Joss were to have anything to do with it, I'd love to hear many a pun about glittery vamps - before, during, or after they went poof. Just because I very much dislike what the modern "vampire" has become and it would just give me a happy 😉

For me, its fine with a new movie without joss or any of the original cast.

I can separate the movie from the tv show. I would just enjoy a new good movie of the buffyverse so to speak. As long as its good ocourse that is 🙂

It would be refreshing.

Compare it to Batman, which has been played by several different actors - in that case, the comic came out before the movie, so anyone could play it. The Batman franchise has enough followers that they can continually crank out new movies with a new Big Bad every time. They can do this because the stories were written and read before the movie performances were done.

Buffy is different. There was a movie that was fun, but rather campy and not that good followed by a good TV series. But still, the number of followers is low - we have 9920 members on this board right now. The televised performances came first before any written comics or screenplays were available. Buffy is forever etched into peoples' minds as an actress and not as a story.

Also, as SMG herself said, the story of Buffy is best understood as a character arc that follows her exploits over an extended period of time. It really isn't a suitable choice for a movie where everything gets resolved in 90 to 120 minutes.

As a counterpoint to that though, how do you explain the smash success of the Star Trek reboot film series? It's built off a television series which, although bigger than BTVS, came first with a dynamic and entrenched leading cast. And yet, the movies have been huge, and the new actors cast have redefined the roles they inherited. Why is that prevented from happening someday with Buffy?

Just a bit about the current "Star Trek" version. Technically, the new characters aren't the same people as the original Kirk, Spock, and so on, because their entire universe is the result of a reality changing anomaly. They inhabit an alternate universe, created by Romulans from the future either changing history or splitting reality into two separate timelines at almost the exact moment of James Kirk's birth. Almost certainly, the producers did that with the express intention of being able to defend the new actors by saying that they actually weren't the "real" Kirk and crew, therefore the new story line isn't really an infringement on Roddenberry's vision.

Something similar could be done with the Buffy's time line, some change both subtle and far reaching so as to result in an alternate Buffy Summers, a Slayer who in no way would infringe on the character Sarah created, but would simply be as different as the new Kirk is from Shatner's portrayal.

Of course, it took several decades for a recasting of the original "Star Trek," and it will probably take just as long for the same thing to happen with "Buffy." By then, Sarah could play her own grandmother.

Perhaps she can play Spike's mother and make BEG's (and some writers) theories about Spike's mommy issues even more creepy. 😉

/SK

Not a theory it's fact. The writer for that episode says in the commentary thats why they picked the actress and gave her that name.

haha, yeah I know the writer has said it. Still prefer to see it as a theory. Also funny to see if would let is pass or not. Sorry for that. :o
I hope they do make it, it'll be interesting to see another persons take on it and with different actors, obviously it will never be as good as the original or the tv series but I'm still intrigued and would definatly watch it 😀

Aren't you missing Nikki Wood from your Slayer signature?

Omg! Your right! 😱 That was my first attempt at making my own signature thingy lol I'm a bit clueless when it comes to things like that! 😕 Will have to try and make a new and improved one! 😀
