Because the movie rights are owned by one studio and the characters created by the show are owned by another. If they were to make a new Buffy movie it could not have any of the shows IP. So no Willow, Giles, Xander, no Hellmouth, no Angel, no Spike etc. There would be the movie universe and the TV universe.

Now some people have said the studios could share rights, a'la Marvel and Sony with Spiderman, but come on, they are only doing that because of the massive amount of coinage. A Buffy movie wouldn't make nearly the same amount as Spiderman in the Marvel universe. They won't share it.

Think I agree. For it to have legs, then you would need some of the original characters IMO. But then I'd rather it be a show if anything, anyway.
