from EW:

It's time to return to the Hellmouth!

EW can exclusively reveal that original Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars are returning for a new story set in the show's universe, but this time with Spike (James Marsters) as the hero. Audible's Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is an audio original set 20 years after the series finale and features Marsters reprising his role along with Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Head, Juliet Landau, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson, James Charles Leary, and Danny Strong, as well as newcomer Laya DeLeon Hayes.

According to author Christopher Golden it is a bit misleading to say that it is about Spike, and he corrects on Facebook that yes, it is about Spike and Drusilla but also the Slayers Cordelia and Indira. And that fans will see what that means... (according to EW it is a parallell universe where Cordy is the Slayer)

Who wants to tune in?

Cordelia and Spike in focus is a bit much for me, but I'll be curious to hear what others think of this 🙂

Sounds interesting, mainly as the cast are in it. But I'll wait til @TriBel panic buys it with her excess of credits! Then see what her review of it is before I restart Audible again.

I thought Cordelia only slays when it comes to dating...

Bad jokes aside, this could be interesting! I'm hoping ASH will tutor James a bit with the accent, because (as to be expected, considering the role ended 20 years ago) when people request for him to do it now, it sounds...not good.

Pass. An alternative universe where nothing previously from the show happened because they could only get certain celebs to return and had to work a story around that.

I have a strong feeling this is going to be awful

I’d like to preface this by saying I fully support Charisma Carpenter in what she says about Joss but I have a feeling this is going to be horribly indulgent romanticised Cordelia stuff

Was it the whole Cordy is the slayer thing that tipped you off? LOL
Tiny clue…. 😂

It’ll probably be Amber wanting to do a ‘fix it’ of sorts only to go completely the other way and we’ll end up with ‘Cordelia is the bestest hero ever!’ schtick

The official synopsis:

A decade has passed since the epic final battle that concluded Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV). The game-changing spell that gave power to all potential Slayers persists. With new Slayers constantly emerging, things are looking grim for the bad guys. Rebellious vampire Spike (James Marsters) is working undercover in Los Angeles with his old pal Clem (James Charles Leary) when he meets feisty, rookie Slayer, Indira (Laya DeLeon Hayes), who wants Spike to be her mentor. Stakes intensify as Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter) emerges from an alternate reality where she alone is the Slayer, and Buffy Summers doesn’t exist. Cordelia enlists Spike’s help with a classic big bad terrorizing her world…his ex, Drusilla (Juliet Landau). Giles (Anthony Head), Anya (Emma Caulfield Ford), Jonathan (Danny Strong), and Tara (Amber Benson) also return, but through the years and the vastness of the multiverse, not everyone is who they used to be…

Oh.. yikes. I don't think I like that.
Wait, Anya, Jonathan and Tara - all dead - return. So they must also come from the Cordy-reality then.

I like that it is something in audio-form though. Nice break from comics and novels.

Incredible news. Buffy is back!
Well, strictly speaking Buffy isn’t back 😉
She is so not back that Cordelia’s reality is entirely void of her existence.

But also, yay Clem gets a part!

And also, I'm sorry but Buffy has to have a Buffy to be Buffy and to me, Buffy is a TV show and any other iteration it really isn't "Buffy".

edit: tv show or movie of course, but I don't expect we'll get another movie, like, ever

I heard about this. Not sure if I'm interested if there's no Buffy. But good for the cast to get some work, I guess.

I don’t think they could make a good tv-series or movie, so I’d rather have this. Let them milk it without subjecting us to some terrible new version.

Also they already made the Slayers comic didn’t they, where Willow is a Slayer? And there is the new Tara book.
The last Buffy comics I read sidelined Buffy pretty hard.

Buffy may be too traditional of a hero to be interesting at the moment, for the stories they want to tell. Or they’re just bored/tapped out with the character. Again, a good reason for them to not even attempt a show

Really hardcore fans will surely tune and enjoy this iteration.

Rereading it it seems like they are intending it to be in the TV canon universe with other characters coming from different universes

So where will they explain Buffy and Angel (the biggest characters in the Buffyverse) are?

I’ve read (for my penance 😂) Cordelia wish fulfilment fanfic before and they’re usually insanely obnoxious so it’ll be kind of funny if it leans into that. There’s no doubt Cordy is going to be written to be pretty much perfect imo

Most non Joss written comics sidelined Buffy. He literally had to pull Gage for the fact his season planning ignored ‘the Buffy of it all’. That’s why when he returned for S12 and addressed Buffy as her own character with autonomy again and not just the ‘uffy’ in Spuffy you had fans having tantrums about it

Joss had many faults and his writing wasn’t always perfect but he always understood that the show Buffy was about well, Buffy

I just got the email from Audible. Only signed back up a couple of weeks ago. Super excited seeing all those cast members involved! Lack of actors, their voices and input, was always something I struggled with in the comics.

... But it's original Spike only with a load of alternate universe characters. And no Buffy. And no Whedon. Less keen on the sound of all that.

Honestly, I'm here for it. Original actors will make it fun. And Charisma back to make Cordy fun again? Yes, please!

Also, Golden was one of the THE best Buffyverse novel writers. His stories always felt very true to characters and plots. Maybe we will get an audio version of Lucy Hanover?

But it really makes me wonder why the franchise continues to sideline Buffy? There are the prequels and sequel books that don't have Buffy in it. As most mentioned, the comics are being very Buffy light. Why is this?

Phrased it like that intentionally. To me Buffy doesn't need Buffy to count as Buffy.
I love Buffy Summers and Sarah Michelle Gellar and of course would prefer her to return.
But this is more than I've hoped for.

Though as it's an audio series they could later have Giselle Loren reprise her role as Buffy.
She voiced her in the XBox videogame Buffy the Vampire Slayer and sounded
indistinguishable from SMG at times.
Or Sarah, who still does voice work (e.g. Teela from Masters of the Universe), just does it herself.

I thought about that too, couldn’t remember her name, but recall she did a good job in the Xbox games
Well this should be a fun ride!

Obviously they are gonna have to do some gymnastics to get around the lack of Buffy and Angel, and my fanfic alarm bells are ringing pretty hard-but let’s see !
