New Buffyverse series on Audible with a focus on Spike

I love Buffy Summers and Sarah Michelle Gellar and of course would prefer her to return.
But this is more than I've hoped for.

Though as it's an audio series they could later have Giselle Loren reprise her role as Buffy.
She voiced her in the XBox videogame Buffy the Vampire Slayer and sounded
indistinguishable from SMG at times.
Or Sarah, who still does voice work (e.g. Teela from Masters of the Universe), just does it herself.

They can't afford Sarah, Aly, and DB. They're not going to come back.

I could be down with someone else voicing the characters, though. I'd take that over this fanfic premise of bringing back dead characters. That's what puts me off the idea more than anything because they are going to have to dramatically warp the characters. Why would any slayer sidle up to Spike and not Buffy or Faith? Are they dead? And Cordy being a slayer? Come on. Just resurrect her as a ghost if having Cordy is a must.

Of course they could, they just opt not to. The themes in the movie as well as the first few seasons of the show are pretty much universal. They could reboot it and tell a good story if a new showrunner had the autonomy to control the show.

Personally I think alternate/parallel universe stories are only interesting if the story in question could have plausibly happened in the original universe if one or two things happened differently in the timeline of the original universe.

E.g. The Wish works as an alternate world story because it's just the original world in a timeline where Buffy never came to Sunnydale.

E.g. Turn Left from Doctor Who works because it's just the original world in a timeline where Donna turned left and never met The Doctor.

But with this story it just sounds like it's in a different universe (or involves characters from a different universe) because that's the only way this story could be happening, which just feels pointless to me.

But I wasn't interested in the Boom comics or really the actual comics either so I don't think I'm the target audience.

Sarah isn’t needed for the novels though. The character is all that is needed. Lol. Make it make sense.

Though I genuinely enjoyed the Tara prequel. Again, it wasn’t really “Buffy,” but it was fun.

Yeah but maybe they were thinking if any of those stories or books got popular and they could make audio or onscreen stories around them, it might not be wise to centre it on Buffy when Sarah would probably not do it. So the future of the brand isn't Sarah, outside of novels and stuff that she doesn't need to be involved with. I don't think it's a successful approach, especially not with stories like this one, but it could make some sense to them I guess.
 
As I don’t use audible, I prefer to read physical copies of books, I will not be listening to their Buffyverse series. Time will tell if this is going to be successful or not.

I feel like if they have Buffy on board, it'll turn into a whole 'Spuffy' thing, and again it'll take away from the rest of the cast and story. So in a sense, it's best if SMG doesn't appear.

They can obviously refer to both Buff and Angel throughout the story, or explain why they're not there.

Stating the obvious here, but if this is well-written, it can work. If they can come up with the quality of The Wish and an alternate reality.

My Spillow heart aches though for the missed opportunity of VampWillow meeting Spike. 🤣

Audible has audio stories in it too. I don’t like audiobooks but I’m not mad at audio stories. I’ve listened to a few Doctor Who stories. It’s like listening to a tv episode without watching the screen.

I am familiar what audible offers in fiction and non fiction as I know someone who listens to books with it. It is the best of both worlds; physical copies of books for the readers and audible for the listeners.
It's a big universe and a long time has passed between the end of the original two shows and this, so it's not unreasonable that some of our other characters are elsewhere having other adventures. They don't have to explain what every character is up to at all times.

I panicked last month and bought Robert Macfarlene Underlands: A Deep Time Journey then realised it was the one I was reading on my Kindle. I might even have the book. 🙄 Anyway - down to 4 credits now. Confession time: my Audible library is 2 pages long and all I've listened to is Sandman 1,2 & 3.

(My) "Preview" of Slayers: Not as good as Sandman (James Marsters or James McAvoy is a bit of a no-brainer for me) and I won't be buying it. My investment in the Buffyverse was mostly academic and kinda stopped with S12.
 
Have very little interest in an alt verse Cordelia , but the rest sounds worth a listen . I shouldn't get too excited . Grinding beloved IPs into the dust has been a theme of my 2023 . 😉

charismacarpenter I am so damn proud of friends @rebma_nosneb and @Christophgolden for providing a story within a beloved universe that is truly of service to my character, Cordelia Chase. If there was ever to be #justiceforcordelia this audio drama series told over 8 hours (in 9 episodes) on @audible provides it. And I'd very much like to lean into, amplify, and center that fact. After all, it's ultimately why I agreed to be a part of it. Also, I believed it would be redemptive of so many things for both me and the fandom. Who, above all, deserves that.



It’s going to be blatant Cordelia as a Mary Sue stuff then
 
Mary Sue doesn't have to mean it's bad. Both James Bond and Mikael Blomkvist are basically Mary Sues.

The fact that I can only name two not bad ones off the top of my head isn't exactly promising. But we won't know until we hear it.
