New Joss Whedon Project: Much Ado About Nothing

Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof? I'm in! Brilliant interviews, and I'm all revved up about Shakespeare. I'll probably read the play now, before the movie comes out. -exciiiiited-

I don't remember an adequate movie adaptation. The Branagh version has pretty visuals but isn't particularly deep. I also vaguely remember a Russian adaptation with Milla Jovovich's mother, Galina Loginova as Hero. She was very pretty but the film itself was depressively bland.

It doesn't have a theatrical release date yet, because it doesn't have a distributor. They're planning to take it to film festivals in the early part of next year (maybe starting with Sundance? We can hope) which would drum up interest from a distributor. It's possible it could end up being released online if that doesn't pan out.

I'll definitely be watching this movie. If for nothing else but to go all fangirl about the people involved. Your comments earlier in the thread has made me both curious and excited. I doubt I'll run to the theaters to do it though. If it'll be released (here) at all.
 
Because it is such a small budget project it will probably only get shown in art house cinemas or on screen 95 of the multiplex once per day at two in the morning or something daft. Either way I will see this at the cinema.
 
Whedon's Much Ado is a bold challenge for the director not because of fancy costumes or complex staging, but because he removes two of his greatest assets: his dialogue and a budget. Of course, nothing Whedon (or anyone else) could write would surpass the Bard, but it's an entertaining exercise seeing the director speak only in a visual language, and then having his budget limit what visuals he has available. With no money and another author's work, Whedon finds his film's strength in the superb cast, clever staging, and an expert understanding of dialogue.

Noel's Take: The best part of Joss Whedon's adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing is probably when Fred and Wesley finally get to be happy together, despite the villainous machinations of Simon Tam. Or wait, maybe the best part is when Topher, Dominic and Agent Coulson conspire to play matchmaker. Or when Andrew and Captain Mal show up as bumbling cops. The point is this: There's a very strong possibility that a viewer's enjoyment of Whedon's take on William Shakespeare will be affected by how much of a Whedon fan he or she already is. It's not a requirement, mind.

Lionsgate has acquired North American distribution rights to Joss Whedon's "Much Ado About Nothing" following its premiere at the Toronto Film Fest.

The deal closed on Tuesday night -- marking the company's fourth deal in two days. Lionsgate has emerged as the biggest buyer during the fest, with acquisitions Monday of Kristen Wiig comedy "Imogene" and Sarah Polley's docu "Stories We Tell" and Tuesday of Stuart Blumberg's directorial debut "Thanks for Sharing."

"Much Ado" will be a joint theatrical release by Lionsgate and sister company Roadside Attractions. Whedon's version of the Shakespeare comedy, with a contemporary spin, stars Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, Fran Kranz, Jillian Morgese, Sean Maher, Clark Gregg and Reed Diamond.

Kai Cole and Whedon produced "Much Ago" through Bellwether Pictures, with Daniel Kaminsky as co-producer.

Kranz stars as Claudio and Denisof as Benedick.

Lionsgate released "The Avengers" helmer's "Cabin in the Woods" earlier this year.

"I'm thrilled to be working with my cronies at Lionsgate again, and with the Roadside team. That they all embrace a Shakespearean romance with the same enthusiasm they had for 'Cabin in the Woods' that they're exactly the mad fools we want to be partying -- I mean working -- with," said Whedon.

The deal was negotiated on behalf of Lionsgate by Jason Constantine, Eda Kowan and Wendy Jaffe while CAA represented the filmmakers in the sale.

I hope that Lionsgate acquiring(sp?) it will ensure that we'll have at least one theater playing it here 😀
 
I hope that means it will get released on DVD!

I don't know if is is my kinda thing but I wanna see it.
 
I can't see a Shakespeare adaptation failing to get a European release, especially not a UK release, so I will definitely be checking this out at my local cinema and on DVD. If not, then I'll just get the DVD when it's released in North America 🙂

On a side note, does anyone else find it really creepy seeing Alexis Denisof speaking with an American accent. Especially such a strong one? It actually freaks me out a little bit 🙂

EXCLUSIVE: Joss Whedon, who late last spring set the blockbuster tone for summer with the May release of The Avengers, will venture further into the warm weather season with his next film "” this time aiming for the counter-programming buck. Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate have set a June 7 opening for Much Ado About Nothing, Whedon's contemporized adaptation of the William Shakespeare play. The film will open that day in five markets and then broaden out June 21.

It isn't a Marvel superhero all-star team, but they've got at least two rabid fan bases to market to: Joss and The Bard. The film was well received when it premiered this fall at the Toronto Film Festival. It's a contemporary spin on the tale of sparring lovers that offers a dark, sexy and occasionally absurd view of the intricate game that is love. Whedon shot it in 12 days, probably for less than what The Avengers wardrobe department spent on spandex.
