New Slayer.

No there should not have been a new slayer called.
Buffy's first death triggered the next slayer, Kendra.

Then Kendra died and Faith was called. That shows that the main slayer line falls on Faith. But since all the slayers have been activated, if any of them dies except Buffy another will be called.

Buffy's death already activated another slayer, that fact that her second death didn't trigger another shows she cannot do it again.

Then please explain what you think the disruption in Season 7 was....I'd love to hear your theory...

I'm going to paraphrase a bunch of Joss Whedon quotes I've heard over the multitude of times I've heard this subject debated. I can find links upon request.

The first is one is from an interview where Joss was being questioned concerning the seeming loose ends in Season 7. He said he didn't understand the problems some people had with S-7, because to him it was "didactic in it's simplicity".

To me that means it's almost like a text book. You're required to believe what you hear. For instance if S-7 tells you 3 times the slayer line can pass through Buffy in S-7 (and it does), you should believe it.

Also this idea of believing what S-7 tells you creates a problem if you want to believe the flatline death in S-6 caused the "disruption" in the slayer line Beljoxa's Eye spoke of. Anya tells us the disruption was caused by the magic spell Willow and the Scoobs used to resurrect Buffy. Giles appears to agree.

On the "why didn't Buffy's death in Chosen call another slayer" question - Joss and the Buffy crew did a Q & A after Chosen, and before S-6. In it Joss said another slayer was not called after Buffy's death, because the line still passed through Faith at that time.

Also, and I'm not too sure about this one, but I believe he also said the line passing through Faith thing could change in the future if the writers could figure out a way to do it.

None of that interferes with the theory the way the line is passed changes in S-7 though, because the theory says the "disruption" was caused not by Buffy's death, but by her mystical resurrection. In other words it was the magic of the resurrection spell that had a side affect of altering the way the slayer line is passed. Magic often has repercussions in the Buffyverse.

On the discrepancies between Fray and Chosen thing - Yeah they're there. Joss himself has aknowledged them in at least 2 interviews I've seen. The last one was recent. He said he'll fix them in the future. He mentioned the possibility of doing it in a Spike movie, or another Fray.

The idea was as I see it was that the girls/women older enought to fight where activated. I can not see an 80 yr old woman betting a vampire over the head with a cane, thought that is a funny thought. Someone that age should be enjoying the rest of there life.
Yes, but you're thinking logically. The slayer line doesn't follow logic, it follows magic. Of course, no 80-year old woman is going to be fighting demons and vampires, unless she's in really good shape for her age! But that's not the point. The point is that Willow activated ALL of the potentials, no matter whether they were 80 or 16 or 10. They didn't all FIGHT, but they were all activated. Now.....whether they remain able to call another slayer upon their deaths, I'm reserving comment, not having read Fray or anything that goes beyond Chosen or that parallels the 'verse.

The way ive always seen it after Chosen since every girl who was a potential became activated that since Faith still held the calling card, she would hold it until she died somehow passing it on to the next slayer who would more or less become the real slayer and it would just keep going on like that until all the active slayers died and we end up at Fray.

Faith dies, next slayer gets the calling card, she dies, repeat step one over and over again throughout the years.

I've always chosen to think of it the same way, except for me it's Buffy who has the "calling card" at the time of Season 7. 🙂

Either way, it works, I think. Hopefully some day, Joss will explain it all, and we'll be able to see how close we came.

but buffy specifically says 'EVERY girl with the power to be a slayer...'
so that would mean every girl with the potential became a slayer...i don't think willow had the power to pick and choose between the different ages.

I actually have my own theory about this but it was quite a long one so i'll post a link to it

Critical period

The slayer line stopped running through Buffy after she died in Season 1. The slayer line then passed from Kendra to Faith. When Buffy was brought back supernaturally by Willow in S6, she was reinserted in the slayer line, thus causing the disruption the eye of Beljoxa talks about in S7 which makes it possible for the First to attack.

The end.

I don't think that Buffy's return in S6 had disrupted the Slayer line. If it had then the Slayer line should have been disrupted when Xander had resurrected Buffy in the S1 finale. But it wasn't.

But I do believe that Buffy's two resurrections proved that more than one Slayer can exist at a time. And I believe that after the second resurrection, this idea had disturbed the First, leading it to finally act. I also believe the presence of a souled vampire near the Hellmouth - whether it was Angel or Spike - had alarmed the First. I think that it had forseen changes in the Slayer line linked with a souled champion closing the Hellmouth.

i don't understand this.
of course the slayer line was inturrupted after Xander resurrected Buffy in S1...a new slayer was called, making two slayers and the line continued to get screwed up as the show progressed.

Yeah but the point you're missing is that in S1, Buffy was naturally revived and in S6 she was RESURRECTED by magic....there's the difference...

Yeah, to what Cordelia said, and it's not like this an idea that came out of a vacuum in the Buffyverse. Over and over again in BTVS we see how magic can be a dangerous tool. It's irresponsible use can have repercussions.

What I don't get is how some people still don't think Buffy holds the line when the First specifically mentioned it to her and others during Season 7.

C'mon now... don't you think there is a reason why she was the one to find the scythe and why the drawing in Fray resembles her?

Now there is the possibility that they both possess the ability to call another slayer. This could be the disturbance because it would mean two slayers forever.

Also something to factor in: Was the First talking about Buffy when he/she/it ordered the Ubervamp to kill "everyone but her"?

now comma, why'd have to go and start a whole new theory? 😉

but i do like that remark...the First never mentions Buffy by name during that speech...so it is quite possible it could have been talking about someone else!

Like who? Ubie's being sent directly to the Summer's house to kill the Potentials, Dawn, Anya, Buffy and Willow. If the her in 'except her' is not Buffy, then who?

In Sleeper, The First says it's not Buffy's turn to die at that point, so Buffy is the most likely canditate to be the 'her' in 'except her'.

Then there's the bit from Chosen where The First declares flat to Buffy's face that the line passes through her. This suggests a bunch of possible reasons why the First might want to keep her alive. There's no reason I can think of why he'd wanna keep Dawn or Anya alive.

Maybe Willow though...

Nah. It's Buffy. Buffy is the her in 'except her'. It's the only possibility that makes sense, isn't it?

all of these theories make sense to me LOL!! i don't know what to think!!
i think all the theories are possible, some more so that others...but until we get conformation from Mr. Whedon i'll believe it all!!

That doesn't mean that the Slayer line continued through Buffy. That only meant that the First Evil saw her as a threat to its future plans. Or quite possible, a tool for its plans.

But when the First tells Buffy the Slayer line passes through her now, in Chosen - that's significant.

You're also forgetting the fact that because Buffy was resurrected, the First was able to attack....and the fact that the First's whole plan involved making it so no other slayer could ever be called again - to wipe out the slayer line and that plan ended with the death of Buffy so she could no longer activate another slayer.

Okay first I have to say what an exciting topic..also do you guys remember Kennedy saying in season 7, when the potentials were talking about who would have been chosen next, and kennedy had said that "I wonder if I am to old to be called", or something similiar, so maybe there was an age limit at when you could be called to be the slayer?

I wonder that, too. Were they all called around the age of 15 or 16 like Buffy? Out of the several potentials out there, whenever a new Slayer was needed.....maybe only one or two were actually the right age. Kinda like professional athletes.....18 is washed up, LOL!
