Shit......

Really teally hope things get better for him.

That last sentence...... No words. 🙁

Yeah, this.

So many "child stars", young actors and people trying to get into the business have had to suffer this, and a lot of the time end up in the same boat as Nic Brendon, or worse.

I hope he finds happiness.

He's back doing cons now, he did Dublin Comic Con last weekend.

going on Dr. Phil?
Yeah, it's funny.. he sent out a plea for Dr. Drew and get's Dr. Phil instead. That's hardly a step in the right direction... though I am not sold on Drew either, but at least he seems more 'reputable'

Can't imagine either would help. I wondered he's getting paid to be on the show and if so how much.
@brinkster130 "I wondered he's getting paid to be on the show and if so how much."
I doubt he's getting paid.. and if so, it would not be much at all.. it's not like he is a big ratings draw, is he? Maybe 10 years ago. But I doubt the MOTS would know who he is.

No way is he a big draw. I suspect he's reaching out for opportunities to be on tv again more so than getting real help.
@brinkster130 "I suspect he's reaching out for opportunities to be on tv again more so than getting real help." That is EXACTLY what I thought.. get his own reality show. That is exactly what I thought.

Dr. Drew still has several rehab type reality shows on air, right? Nick must be bummed only Dr. Phil was interested.
Yeah, that's what I was gonna say - maybe he'll be in one of those rehab reality shows. I can vaguely remember an American show with some Z-lister types on it. Not sure if for publicity or actual rehabilitation, or both.

Both. But it went off the air years ago. I think he wants his OWN show..
I don't really think we should be kicking someone when their down, not least when they have such a serious issue. At least he is taking steps in the right direction, its a start anyway.

Uhhhh, how have I only just noticed this. HAHA.
I don't think anyone's "kicking someone when they're down" - Brendon's taking his problems to the public by going on Dr. Phil, and a lot of people here have said they don't think that's the right thing to do in making progress with his condition. I agree - it probably isn't. He needs a long stint away from everything, TV and cons and media in general, to help get himself better and find happiness.

While I am not too familiar with Dr. Phil as I don't watch that type of program, I'm not sure he can be trusted. I've heard of a few stories he's gotten that sound scripted for entertainment.

I've got to say that I'm disappointed in Brendan.
He's stated at least twice that he wants to receive treatment for his condition but to think that he can fulfill that by appearing on Dr. Phil tells me that either he doesn't understand what he needs or that he's only interested in milking the fan sympathy his condition is receiving.
On top of that to also be due to attend another convention after the incidents he's had at them which he claims to be regretful of is irresponsible and invalidates that regret.

@Mr Trick: No one is "kicking someone when their down" in pointing out that this might not be the right way to handle Brendan's condition. Sometimes it can't be helped when the truth is harsh and sometimes it NEEDS to be harsh to get through. That doesn't make it cruel. It more often than not is actually a gesture of truly caring.

The fault, I admit isn't all his own, however. It's clear that Brendon isn't always in his right mind and obviously his publicist isn't discouraging him from remaining on the public radar nor is anyone from his personal life seeming to have an interest in helping him which is quite sad. I do offer my sympathy that he is suffering and that it could have stemmed from his being sexually abused as a child if there is any truth and logical connection to that claim, I've been there (though I'm mentally fine and refuse to touch alcohol) but I can't condone a lot of his actions and choices, that he's made claims of regret and wanting help that he's not doing a very good job of showing that he means.

He needs to check himself or be checked into a rehabilitation facility and disappear from the radar for a while. The media attention isn't good for him right now, it's only being counterproductive.

Maybe he should've just gone to long term rehab in the first place. Dr. Phil is, on some level, about ratings so NB shouldn't have been surprised that maybe Dr. Phil went for the 'juiciest' stuff first.
I don't blame him for walking off, I'm sure I would've done the same if somebody had confronted me with my worst excesses right off the bat, but just have a little foresight about what you're getting yourself into.
I hope Nick learns to focus on himself and what he needs.

"When I was in that seat, I felt that Dr. Phil went for the jugular, talking about some of my recent mistakes, with no build up. I felt that he wanted me to lay the darkest parts of myself on national TV right from the start, and I'm not willing to do that."

Clearly he has not seen the show and should have done his research before going on it. That's pretty standard operations on that show (yes, I watch it when I have the time and I love it!)

Referencing his most famous role -- as Xander on Buffy -- he added, "Buffy never chased ratings, and neither should I. Rest assured I am in private treatment and we are going deep so I can live a long and happy life."

Ugh, sigh, and another sigh... I'm sorry but "and neither should I" - THEN WHY GO ON THE DR. PHIL SHOW IN THE FIRST PLACE? If you're not looking for good ratings, i.e. attention, then off-screen rehab is obviously a better option than on-screen pseudo therapy sessions!

Exactly.
Maybe things are getting so desparate for him than he will just take anything that he thinks will help, I hope not. I also hope that he has good people around him to give him better advice. This is starting to get scary. I did think that he spoke very well in that interview though.

I have always seen Dr. Phil as a pompous ass who peddles Psych 101 as his own special brand of insight. The first part of psychological treatment is doctor - patient confidentiality. If he doesn't understand that then all he is doing is being Jerry Springer with a degree. If he is a member of any body politic such as the College of Physicians and Surgeons, they should punt his butt out of the organization and strip him of the right to practice. People should not be forced to discuss private matters with an audience looking on or the cure becomes worse then the disease.

Preach it.

Well.. the people aren't forced. The agree to go on the show. The know what the show is about.

And you know.. we have Oprah to thank for him.

But.. on a side note... does any think that if there were to do a Dr. Phil movie that Jeffrey Tambor would not be just ideal to play him? First time I saw Dr. Phil I thought it was a joke and it was Tambor.

Jeffrey Tambor is Dr. Phil's long-lost brother.
Dr. Phil released the statement

Nicholas Brendon appeared on Dr. Phil yesterday. Unfortunately, he chose to disengage before a dialogue with Dr. Phil ever began. There was no drama, he simply chose to leave and did so in a respectful manner. His family and associates remained and participated fully and productively in the episode. Dr. Phil has nothing but the highest respect for Nicholas and wishes him the best in his quest for physical/mental health and sobriety, and stands ready to assist him in any way possible. The episode was completed as scheduled. An airdate will be announced in the future.
