Off With Their Heads! what shows should go.

OMG I HATE HIM! He's responsible for the decrease in quality of my OTHER favorite show! Urrrg...I'm totally with you on the Boycott Dark Shadows thing, that's so annoying! Let's just hope another network picks up Angel though...

I hope UPN takes on Angel, i mean they took on Buffy after their problems with The WB. That guy deserves to be shot!

Everwood
One Tree Hill
7th Heaven
Smallville
Steve Harvey's Big Time
Gilmore Girls

That's pretty much it ... god, now I remember why I hate that channel so much ...

For those of you who keep mentioning Star Trek: Enterprise: It's not on the WB. It's on a different network (UPN).

Now, there are plenty of crappy WB shows with ratings worse than Angel's that they could have cancelled. Here's what they all have in common: they're cheaper to produce. WB can make ten Steve Harvey's Big Times (God help us) for the cost of one show like Angel. Shows like 7th Heaven and One Tree Hill don't have any special effects or action set pieces to weigh the budget down. Smallville isn't a cheap show to make, but it also does much better than Angel in the ratings (even if it's a crappier show). Personally, I would've canned Charmed before Angel, but I've never thought much of Charmed so I guess I'm a bit biased on that one.

As for Dark Shadows, don't bank on it actually making it to the WB schedule next season, it could still (and I'm betting it will) die in pre-production.

That's true, but it still doesn't disprove the theory it was used as a bargaining chip, or that at the time it was part of a larger strategy.

Just for the heck of it though, I decided to try a little search to see if I could find any information on how serious Warner Bros are with Dark Shadows. I found what I think is some interesting stuff.

Dark Shadows Scoop

WB's heavy hitters will be forming the production team.

Original "Dark Shadows" creator Dan Curtis and "ER" and "West Wing" producer John Wells are the creative forces behind the WB update, along with Mark Verheiden ("Smallville"), who wrote the pilot.

As scripting for the proposed WB Dark Shadows pilot gets underway, a recent article in the Boston Herald seems to bode well for the project's fortunes: "It's one of our top priorities," commented Pam Morrison, WB's head of programming publicity.

Ad LD said, I could search for the exact figures but I will say that hundreds and hundreds of pilots are shot each year and only a tiny tiny fraction of them ever are shown to the public. So at this early stage, where they haven't even finished casting the pilot yet, let alone shooting it, the WB could not possibly make a decision as to whether they would rather have Dark Shadows than Angel.

Also, GL said in January that he saw no reason why the two shows could not coexist on the same network, as the show premises were completely different other than having a vampire in them.

Oh, and don't get too excited with them saying that DS is one fo their "top priorities". Fearless was their top priority over the summer and look at how that turned out...

Can we please get off of Dark Shadows now and get back to Angel?

all good points. i guess as viewers its hard for us to comprehend some of the reasons to keep a show up besides quality and popularity. let's not get into the angel before charmed and vice versa debate. i dont want to see too much hair pulling and biting...lol. but yeah, it is probably likely that it wont make it very far. few shows do. what do y'all think the chances of UPN picking up Angel are?

It's hard to say...I mean, Angel might reach too old a demographic than UPN caters to. At the same time, its kind of a safer show than Buffy...so they might give it a try. Personally, I think Angel would be the highlight of that trash network. But i'm not sure they're looking to change their reputation.

The question is really whether the people that would advertise on Angel are looking to reach UPN's audience.

From what I've been reading, another reason UPN might not be interested in Angel is UPN is in ratings trouble right now in that it doesn't have any to speak of. A network in trouble might not be interested in getting involved with an aging series others are saying is on the way out. Also another company holds the rerun rights to Angel, and isn't likely to give them up.

Can we get back on the subject of the thread for a sec though, which is "what shows should go". I choose Dark Shadows. I know it's your board and you make the rules Buffy, but if the rules are you make your point and there's no opportunity for rebuttal, well that's just not fair.

Yes, many unseen pilots are made, but they don't all have the public endorsement of the CEO of the company, nor do they have the cream of the networks talent working on them. My point is Dark Shadows is a credible possibility to be what the network has said it will be, "an entry in the 2004 fall lineup", and even if it isn't, all signs point to it having been used as a political pawn in the effort to control, or failing that discard Angel the Series.

I NEVER tell people they can't disagree with me. But I'm not going to not reply myself either. I'm not going to say "Yes you are right - DARK SHADOWS IS SATAN" lol. And yes, I'm tired of reading posts blaming a show not even made yet for Angel being cancelled.

A good CEO will recognize when a show doesn't work, even when they love the show itself. GL was totally behind Fearless (which had a really great pilot imo btw) too, and its permanently shelved now.

Editing to address your edit: The network doesn't need a 'pawn' to cancel a show.

Okay, as you said, back to the topic of this thread: Which shows should be cancelled instead of Angel? And you can't pick Dark Shadows lol cause its not on the air 😛

I'd say anything other than 7th Heaven, Everwood, Charmed and Smallville which I watch. Obviously if its a choice between Angel or them, I'd pick Angel. But there are all those crap UPN-like sitcoms that could easily get trashed.

I agree with Billie Hunter, "every show on the WB should be cancelled before Angel" (and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be adding Dark Shadows to the list this fall).

damn it...what is this??...fearless....lol...this falkin sucks...

lol...i'm begining to think that i should just throw away my tv...and just watch the shield every week....just so that these falkin networks can't play me anymore...

the wb...is on my shiz list...i will not watch the wb no more...damn falkin CEO...Angel was healla great this season...and it gets falkin axed...and smg won't show up...shiz...if i were joss...i'd be like loosing my mind right now...falk...

Just as I'm pretty sure I'll be sitting there watching it each week.

I'm actually kind of curious now...does anyone know what the premise of Dark Shadows is?

I forget where exactly I got this from. I think it was from,

http://www.collinwood.net/new/ somewhere.

A brief history of Dark Shadows

"My name is Victoria Winters... my journey is just beginning..."

On 27 June 1966, those words began the journey of a young governess to the remote coastal town of Collinsport, Maine, which for the next five years would be the home of the assorted supernatural forces inhabiting the world of ABC-TV's Dark Shadows, the first gothic soap opera.

From the murky images of virginal governess Victoria Winters (Alexandra Moltke) on a twilight-bound train, to the hulking inky outline of the ominous Collinwood mansion, the opening moments of the first episode made it clear that Dark Shadows did not intend to play by any of the traditional soap opera rules. A heady distillation of gothic romance plots and intrigue, producer Dan Curtis' brainchild was not an overnight success. Intially faced with poor viewing figures and wee mysteries surrounding the parentage of the young governess, in desperation a ghost story was added to the mix. When viewers responded positively, the producers decided that the supernatural plots were where the show's future lay, opening the floodgates for a vivid cast of spectral characters to menace the tortured Collins family and their ghost-ridden mansion, Collinwood, a dark wonderland housed in a tiny Manhattan studio.

Nine months into the show's run, grave-robbing drifter Willie Loomis (John Karlen) released vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) from imprisonment in the Collins family mausoleum, and pop-culture history was born. Dark Shadows pioneered the silhouette of the angst-ridden vampire searching redemption some three decades before Angel lusted after Buffy. In spite of Dan Curtis' mandate to introduce a bloodsucking fiend as his vampire protagonist, the writers and production staff took a more considered approach, using the vampire myth as a metaphor for loneliness and isolation.

In the coming years, the residents of Collinsport would be victims to werewolves, witches, and warlocks, even the Devil himself. Amongst the most popular supernatural characters were Angélique (Lara Parker), a beautiful vengeful witch who gave the vampire curse to Barnabas, and Quentin Collins (David Selby) a Byronic teen idol afflicted with the werewolf curse.

Moving back and forth through various time periods with bravado, and featuring an ersatz 'repertory company' of actors in multiple roles, Dark Shadows delivered imagination and adventure in abundance, drawing massive audiences. The cast toured the country to huge acclaim, regularly drawing thousands of enthusiastic fans.

From what i've read about it on the net it sounds really good to be honest. I'm not going to not watch a show just because Angel is getting cancelled. Its the network, i'm not happy with, not any other tv shows that may be seen as replacing it.

I cannot believe they are booting Angel before 7th Heaven!!! 😡 That show is terrible now, was bad before, and will get worse in the future! It is melodramatic to the extreme, and all the actors (except the one playing ruthie!) need to be shot asap, especially the mom!!!
