Official Discussion of 7.14 "First Date" (UPN-US)

Jonathan is not an evil guy! It's a good play though.... because he was so sweet and *innocent* (?) but it really was shocking to see him as the First's toy.

I think that this shows us that The First is not afraid to shock us! This shows that I think it'll use Angel and Tara as evil beings to stir up the whole scooby gang.. God help us!!!

yeah it wasn't the same actress (as a brought up before) but hehehe she was waaaay prettier. yay

God I loved this episode! Jonathan as the First is so amazingly good, the best! And Wood is a cool character! And nothing but praise to Ashanti!

giles' "escape" would have been much more impressive if he had done it all in one shot, rather than cutting to a different angle when he grabbed the axe =\

I like the episode but I wasn't impressed. Of course, it had it's high points. What Buffy ep doesn't? But at the same time I found it hard to stay interested. Maybe because Willow/Kennedy were not really part of the ep. LOL Regardless, I think the epsiode was lacking somewhere.

Ashanti let me down. I thought she would do a better job.. to coin a popular phrase.. "don't quit your day job." She was good, don't get me wrong but it could have been better.

I knew through the whole episode that the slayer Spike killed in the 70's was Wood's mom. I thought that was a nice twist. Even though I knew, it was still great to hear it. I'm looking forward to how Wood deals with this information.

Anya. LOL literally! I love her so much. She cracks me up, every episode. I loved the scene where she was stating how everybody had a date. Funny stuff.

Spike tackling Giles was hilarious. Spike: "You're suppose to be all go throughable." Giles: "Then why the hell did you tackle me for, you burk! What's that suppose to do?" Spike: "Oh yeah, I didn't think of that." LOL

The whole chip thing. Yeah, I think it should have been a bigger deal. But oh well, they did what I wanted so, yeah.

All in all, good episode, not great. I'd give it a 6.

I liked it alot, especially for Robin Wood's backstory.. didn't see it coming, thought it was more than amazing...

still, i have some doubts like all the multiple turok-han thing, was that the same seal of danthazar?? and why didn't the first summon so many turok-hans

also, how could Xander have sent that message to willow??? he was a little tied up... but anyway "gay me up" was priceless

and how come Spike didn't know Giles wasn't the first? they all knew... although i could think spike was having many convultions last week, and he just had a brain surgery so, maybe he overheard something and didn't quite understand it... or maybe it's a goof... any ideas/thoughts/explanations???

Maybe he sent the message before she went all evil on him and the message was in fact... don't call i'm busy all night. Or whatever Willow said their code was.

Hope I'm doing this right... never posted before!

I think this was the greatest episode this season (right up there with Conversations, anyway)... hilariously funny. My favorite lines... paraphrasing....

Anya to Buffy: "Just leave me alone to stew in my impotent rage. Also, I need to pee, so really, you should go."

Giles: "Ice cream is the universal language...."

New SIT: "Are the flashcard monsters attacking?!?"

Andrew to the First: "So, do you have any, um, weaknesses I should know about?"

the First as Jonathan (disbelievingly): "Are you wearing a WIRE?"

Xander: "Gay me up!"

Andrew (dreamily): "Mmmmmmm. Captain Archer!"

I couldn't BELIEVE that Buffy said "Why does everyone think I'm still in love with Spike?"... and Willow didn't call her on it. I actually had to stop tape and ask, "Did she really just say that?"

Another thing I thought was interesting... when Spike comes to the restaurant and interrupts Buffy and Woods' date, and then we see all 3 of them in Woods' car, with Spike in the back seat... as he's driving along, Woods looks pointedly in the rear-view mirror. It sure LOOKS as if he's studying Spike... but of course, Spike wouldn't have a reflection. Surely Woods would have noticed the lack of a reflected Spike in the back seat? And yet, it is only during the later fight, when Spike assumes his "game face," that Woods remarks, in apparent surprise, "He's a vampire!"

Thoughts?

Here's my husband's latest wild conspiracy theory.... Spike has killed TWO slayers. Now we are told the second had a child, who grew up to be the mysterious Principal Woods.... is it possible the other one had a child, too? That slayer was Chinese, if I remember correctly.... any possibility the new SIT could be a descendant? I can't quite remember, but I thought the dead Chinese slayer died with a message to her mother on her lips... was it an apology? Would be interesting if it all tied together somehow... but I suspect it's way too much of a reach.

Still, the fact that a slayer HAD a child raises interesting possibilities for Buffy... though we don't know if Woods' mother already WAS his mother when she was "chosen," or if she became one during her tenure as slayer... and who/where is Woods' father?

Hey Merryman! Good pickup on the no reflection thing with Spike in the car... yeah, wouldn't Wood have noticed that?

Hmmm......

wouldn't Wood have noticed that?

Not necessarily. Sometimes someone is sitting in the back seat and you want to check them out, but you don't want to appear to be checking them out, so you glance in the mirror without moving your body (which is what Wood was doing). If your lucky you get a glance at the person, but it doesn't always work.

Happens to me all the time.

I actually thought that when he said "he's a vampire", he was life comfirming what he thought from the car...

Yeah, he wasn't so surprised at Spike's vampirism because he had suspected it from the car. He does become pretty suspicious in the car after glancing back at Spike in the rearview.

So how was Ashanti? I havent seen the episode yet, im from the UK, but dont mind being spoiled Is she a good actress or did she ruin the episode?

I actually thought that when he said "he's a vampire", he was like comfirming what he thought from the car...

Yeah, that's the way I chose to see it too.

Wood is speeding off to save Xander. He takes a casual sneaky peek in the rear view to check Spike out. He doesn't see anyone there. This doesn't necessarily mean anything, because Spike could be scrunched down out of view. Later when he sees Spike vamp out though, he goes "Aha, a vampire."

There's some other problems with that scene though.

Wood says they're 10 minutes away from the school. They're driving down a road with no street lights, turns, or stop signs. You have to figure they're going at least 60 miles an hour. This puts them a minimum of 10 miles from the school. The school would have to be walking distance from Buffy's.

This means a vampire (Spike) has a sniffing range of at least 10 miles. Spike says he will find Buffy by following her scent. Also, because Spike appeared to be walking, a vampire would have to be able to move incredibly fast (at least 60 mph) in order to make it believable Spike would travel all that distance to warn Buffy rather than just walk over to the school to check out Xander's problem.

Personally I don't think the writer considered all this. I think she just stuffed all that stuff in there for dramatic affect without worrying about the believability factor.

I'm going to choose to excuse what I can and accept the rest blindly.

I actually thought of that, but then i realized it is no mistake... because xander's story isn't happening at the same time... think about it... xander goes with the girl, he sends willow a message saying he got lucky, which everybody obsiouly interprets as something is eating xander's head... spike goes to warn buffy, while xander is probably being knocked out and taken to wherever the seal was (i'm still not sure it was the school's) spike and buffy go rescue xander while he is being sacrificied... so it really isn't a mistake...

Sorry to say it, but i think it will be too much of a reach. The new SIT is Vietnamese (spelling?). I beleive that she is anyways. I thought they had mentioned that. If i'm wrong, someone please correct me, though.
