Only real issue with Xander

One possible reason that comes to mind is that Joss wanted to make certain that Xander could never seriously qualify as Buffy boyfriend material. Other than Parker, who I try to totally forget about anyhow, Buffy's lovers have been either superhuman or chemically/electronically enhanced and highly motivated warriors. By keeping Xander limited to being "the guy who fixes the windows," with no more skill than a normally experienced street fighter, he is kept out of candidacy for being Buffy's next snuggle puppy. (Sorry, Bander shippers, but that's just what it seems like to me, despite mixed signals from early Season 8)

That's a good point. But since you're talking to a Bander shipper, I have to admit if this is the real reason, then Joss be DAMNED! They didn't have to make him superhuman. I just try to put myself in his place... If I fought alongside peoples and risked my life all the time, I'd most likely try to learn to fight better so I have less chance dying, lol.

Except Buffy was attracted to Angel and Riley before she knew anything about their superpowers.

Anyway, if that was Joss's rationale then it's a case of terrible writing, a writer shouldn't allow meta reason to get in the way of logical character behaviour.

I always wished we would have gotten to see Xander getting a little more training. It seems like, since Giles was Buffy's Watcher and he allowed Willow and Xander (and later, others) to help them in the good fight, he would have felt the need to give them hand-to-hand lessons.

Exactly... Why didn't Giles train both of them? They were part of the team, they had high risks of dying!

I think Xander (all of them, actually) definitely improved over the seasons, fighting-wise. He could still be knocked out of the way pretty easily but I take that to be a human thing.

As for them not being trained...well, personally, I don't care how many karate lessons I got. I'm still small-boned, rather short, and clumsy as all get-out. Some of us aren't gifted fighters.

That bothered me too. Especially since in Checkpoint, Buffy says Xander's skill is that he's clocked field time... and then they don't train him to do so... it's annoying.

Indeed.
It never bothered me really. I like the fact he can throw a good punch and take someone down, but it takes some work. I'd hate to see Xander with karate moves. He's clocked field time - he stakes vamps, kills demons and can utilize weapons but if he gets kicked or punched - it's going to hurt. That's why I like him, he doesn't have super strength or magic to protect himself. He could die very easily but he'll still fight the bad guys.

I guess Xander wasn't really bothered in training. He can hold himself against a vampire and that slaying isnt really his business
