After finishing all the current episodes available of The Vampire Diaries earlier today, I thought I'd take a look online at the forums and comment pages about the show. Being a massive fan I thought it would be great to see what everyone else has thought about the show etc. Needless to say, it does not compare to this one AT ALL.
I'd pretty much like to take this opportunity to thank the mods and great members on this board from preventing it from turning into a free-for-all for crazy people to yell comments at each other and dismiss everyone so rudely. I spent 20 minutes reading comment among comment about how 'you're so stupid' because you don't have the same views as me. Plus there was A LOT worse than that being said. There was no attempt to even stop this sort of behaviour.
Needless to say, I am relieved to return here to the land of the sane 🙂p) and feel comfortable enough to express my views without having my actual life threatened 🙂confused:😱🙁)
Thanks again! You guys are great!

oh wow, life threatening, that sounds... crazy as mentioned
I don't think I've seen a single episode of The Vampire Diaries. I have invested a lot of time in a lot of other shows, however. When TVD came out it came across as cheesy to me. Like a show capitalizing from Twillight's success. I like to think I am way wrong and I know a lot of people who like the show. What show could one compare it to? Or what kind of show is it, more it less. As far as Vampire shows go, there is Buffy, True Blood.. or movies as different as Twillight, Interview With A Vampire or JC Vampires..

As far as other fandoms go. I've been a Friday the 13th fan as long as I can remember. I've meet many members from forums that I used to go to. At one point a large amount of members from around the world meet up in the states, rented out an entire camp (with the mess hall, ball park, swimming pool, and nearly 20 cabins) and had a F13 Camping (Partying) Week.

I also like Supernatural, True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, The Walking Dead.. and the list goes forever. However, I think I always place Buffy first. Its the only show I currently visit a forum for (this one!)

:sneaky:

I thought the same thing about TVD when it first came out, but it's actually a kick-ass show. Josh even loves it!
The only other real fandom I actively participate in one on Yahoo Answers for professional wrestling. I haven't been as involved as I used to be simply for the reasons you outlined. It can get a little intense, and so many people get so angry and are completely unable or unwilling to listen to other view points. That drives my nuts.

I'm thinking about joining a Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire forum. There's one I've been checking out quite a bit and it seems pretty organized and civil, which are two huge pluses about this one.

Beyond that, I used to, years ago, be a part of a comic book forum but it grew to become more of the same. Name calling and bashing, and for me, there's no fun in that.

Exactly, you want to express your opinions not get abused for having them.
I totally sympathize with you on the TVD fandom- especially the shipper wars that go on between the Stelenas and Delenas!! I joined a TVD forum a year or so ago and was quickly turned off by how rude and overly mean people felt they needed to be to get their point across. Now if I want to talk about TVD, I do it either on After Darkness or another forum that has a big Vampire Diaries fanbase that I frequent.
The Walking Dead has a pretty rabid fanbase, too. I met the craziest troll I've ever encountered on a Walking Dead forum. I have come to appreciate Buffy Boards all the more since getting involved in these other fandoms!

And here I was thinking that the Bangel/Spuffy wars were bad - Stelena's and Delena's are so 'enthusiastic' about it all. The discussions I've seen all turned into which brother is better for Elena as opposed to in-depth intellectual discussions.

That's exactly what I thought about it too. I think my exact thing was 'how can the vampires walk around in the daytime, that's pathetic!' Then I figured I'd give it a go since one of my friends said great things about it. And well, the rest is history. It's got some really great storylines that you really have to pay attention to and some really likeable characters. I do recommend staying out of the shipper-wars though because, just, wow. 😀

I don't participate actively in any other fandom other than Buffy, so I can't really say, but I have gotten my feet wet in the Supernatural fandom...and it was scary, lol

haha! I think I recall the show making fun of its own fans at one point. Even making fun of Sam/Dean Erotic Fiction, lol
I hate the TVD fandom but Smallville has been my worst experience in fandom its just horrible. Seriously hate the smallville fandom.

Yes, the "Smallville" fandom was pretty crazy. I tried with "Smallville" and just couldn't get into the fandom.
In all truthfulness, I NEVER thought I'd ever love a show as much as BtVS to even want to get involved with a fandom. However, "The Vampire Diaries" changed my mind in a hardcore way, and then "The Walking Dead" sealed my fate. I'm doomed to fangirl all my life. LOL

Just a heads for Song of Ice and fire, A Forum of Ice and Fire is great.

I post over at ComicBookResources mostly in the Batman section and sometimes that can get kind of crazy. No threats just rudeness at times. I'm also a huge Star Wars fan and keep meaning to find a good community. For awhile I was involved in a Wheel of Time forum that was really great, but with the last book coming out I'm not sure how much longer it'll last.

The Stelena/Delena war is horrible on forums. Even fans from the same "side" could get nasty with each others at times... Either that, or you could be ignored completely from everyone if you said one thing that didn't agree with their POV...

I'm content here and staying. No way I'm going back into any other fanforum. Way too scary XD

They are gone now - but the two Rockstar seasons, Rockstar INXS and Rockstar Supernova had fans that needed rabies shots. There were accusations, arguments, flame wars and every other type of bad behaviour. Some of it was so bad that the mods deleted entire threads and might have to do the same after a few days. There was a group of people so traumatized by it that they started a separate forum where membership was by invitation only. One of the originators of the forum was a man who lived about six miles west of me in Mississauga, just west of Toronto. He was accused of trying to entice a woman on the board of moving in with him, even though she was a single mother who lived in Auckland NZ! I did get invited to that new forum and joined, but I never had a problem with bad behaviour on the net and sometimes I gave as good as I got.

One of them was a guy named Levin who was always starting new threads extolling Lukas Rossi (the eventual winner on Rockstar Supernova). He would blast anyone who supported any of the other contestants, and I was a supporter of Storm Large. After one blast from Levin, I wrote back a little "fan" fiction:

"Levin’s (Almost) Girlfriend

Levin lives near a nightclub, but he rarely goes there since he has become well-known to the girls who are regulars there, and they can’t stand him. But he checks it out every once in a while for new girls and one night, a new girl arrived on the same night Levin decided to go there. But this girl was a real Amazon, pretty, but six feet tall with muscles like a lumberjack.

One of the girls at the dance hall took a look at her and said to her girlfriend who was also there, “I’ve seen her before – isn’t she a roller derby queen?”

Her friend said, “I thought she was a wrestler.”

Then they saw Levin walking up toward her. One girl said, “Maybe we should warn him – she is not someone you want to annoy.”

Her friend said, “But it’s Levin – let nature take its course. If she likes him, that gets him out of here. If she doesn’t…” They looked at each other with evil grins.

To their surprise, the Amazon left with Levin. He asked her to go home with him. On the way home, she said, “You know, I’m a wrestler.”

Levin said, “Yeah, but you wrestle girls. How hard can that be?”

The girl said, “I think you’d get a real education if you fought me.” She wasn’t expecting him to take her up on it, but Levin gave her a punch to the arm. She was surprised to think anyone would be stupid enough to start a fight with her, so she punched him back with a blow that bruised one of his ribs and knocked the wind out of him.

She said, “Your arm muscles are like overcooked spaghetti. I could flatten you if I wanted and you couldn’t hurt me.”

Levin was enraged. This… this girl was saying she was stronger than him! They happened to be walking by a road construction site where a truck was dumping hot tar on the asphalt, so he caught her off guard and tripped her right onto the street and she landed in hot tar that burned her hands. She lost it. Levin started running away. “What kind of moron are you?” she said as she caught up to Levin, flattened him down on the sidewalk. “You couldn’t hurt me in a fair fight, so this is what you do?” She had Levin crumpled up in a ball so he couldn’t move. “I want you to apologize!”

Levin said, “Don’t hurt me – I’m sorry I punched you.”

She said, “I don’t care about you punching me – I hardly felt it. I want you to apologize for burning me – the punch didn’t hurt, but tar did. So say it – say you’re sorry tar did.”

Levin said, “I am sorry tar did.”

The Amazon said, “Say it three times fast.”

Levin said, “I am sorry tar did! I am sorry tar did. I am so retarded!”

The Amazon let him up and he was never seen in that nightclub again."

I actually really love The Vampire Diaries.
Of course it will never be better than BTVS but it's good nonetheless.
The fandom can be pretty crazy let's face it...but I'm glad I'm not a crazy one. I am a shipper but I respect other people's opinions and constructive criticism. I also know plenty of people who you can freely talk to but beware of tumblr..they're gonna eat you alive.

But if you guys wanna give TVD a chance..it may seen very boring if you just watch The Pilot but it's full of mythology and some characters are very complex and interesting. It's not Twilight at all, I can tell you.

Every fandom can get crazy. Don't think it has much to do with the subject in itself. It's more down to how the community is handled.

Would like to think though that fandoms with an older audience should be a bit more reasonable. But I'm not convinced that's actually true.

I haven't had much in the way of bad experiences with fandoms but I have to say the Glee fandom sometimes scares me. I don't really care for Glee that much anymore but I have a friend who adores it and I hear such horror stories about the scary tumblr wars!

Apart from witnessing a bit of Glee horribleness, I've only really heard of bad fandom rubbish through other people so I can't say I've experienced it much. Mostly I just see people complaining about the problems, not the problems themselves 😛 But I guess I'm not in as deep as some people. I stick to my little forums, the only big forum I go on is this one and the fandom here seems fine to me!

I don't know whether you'd call this a ''fandom'' but my god are Martin Scorsese fans annoying and completely elitist and a bunch of jerks. I've been called a ''Stupid Spielberg fan'' for saying that I'd rate Schindler's List over Raging Bull, and most of them act like he is the greatest person who ever walked the earth, and if you disagree, well, you just have bad taste in movies. The amount of awful users who plague film forums has actually hurt my enjoyment of films, which is very sad for me, because film has played such a massive role in my life. I used to be a massive user in the film section in y!a (A scorsese fan really, really, really hurt me by personally insulting me), but I was too scared to say that I found that Scorsese, Lynch, P.T Anderson, Coppola, Tarantino, Kubrick Godard were overrated, I had a preference for films that has a very strong emotional core to them and were depressing or just simply moving: anything ranging from a Spielberg film to say, a Russian war film called Idi I Smotri. And they just make fun of other fans Oh boy just realized I had a massive rant.

Other fandoms include: Sherlock / Doctor Who. They just scare me. I can't really explain it, but I'll just say I'm scared of them.

I just don't understand why people feel the need to abuse people who don't share the same view as you. The world thrives on individualism.
Buffy fans are the best. I'm so glad we have this forum & there are so many great people on here. I tried to check out some other forums for other shows as well but nothing can compare to BB. I'd rather just chat about the shows on here than join another forum. 🙂

I just can't stand when people are so obsessed with a show or director or movie that they refuse to see the flaws in it. I really liked The Walking Dead when it first started but now I'm just watching it for comedic purposes haha. The first season was fantastic and it's kind of gone downhill ever since. Most of the people I've talked to who are involved in that fandom admit this, and none of them seem overly aggressive, so that fandom doesn't seem too bad. I really don't participate in any of them to be honest, I occasionally look through the Breaking Bad and TWD tag on tumblr but I will never love another show as much as I love Buffy. I could talk about it forever. Haha I just started TWD a few months ago and I'm already sick of it 😉 and although I love Breaking Bad, its sometimes *too* good and I need to take a break.

I am sometimes annoyed by members of the Xena Warrior Princess fandom. So many can't accept Xena & Gabrielle being soulmates without a romantic/sexual aspect. And they hold Ares to regular standards and see him as an abusive boyfriend/ex. He did many horrible things but he was the freakin God of WAR.

I hated when a lot of 90210 fans started calling Silver a "slut" and "whore" for sleeping with Liam. I hated that plot and disliked their characters for it but how on earth did that make her a slut? And they completely reduce her seasonal or even series arc to that when that year she was dealing with having the cancer gene, needing a mastectomy, etc.

I love the Doctor Who & Supernatural fandoms. Well, at least I haven't had any issues with them.
