If the fandom is big enough it'll be scary to some. Simple as that. Obsession is one thing. It's when you refuse to see/admit others point of view it gets scary in my opinion. I don't care if you think that Buffy, Vampire diaries, Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga is the best thing ever. Ok. Not totally true. At all. I won't agree with you and might try and make you see things differently. I will however have no trouble at all if you love them. Shipping wars, or fandom wars can be fun for a while. It rarely stays that way since people take it too serious and personal. "If you don't like what I like, you don't like me." Now that's scary.
I'm glad you think that way but in general I can't agree with you. There's some amazing Buffy fans but there's also bad ones. I'm guessing the same can be said about most, if not every, fandom.
What's so great about this forum is that it's being managed very well. In my opinion. At least when the staff have time. People have lives after all. None of us "outsiders" can imagine the amount of crap that get thrown at them for keeping the boards as they are. Personally I'd given up a long, long time ago. My point is that some boards give a good impression of the fandom while others don't. Of course what a "good" impression is can vary between people. I like how it is here most of the time. How Twilight lovers have been treated in the past was for example a low point for me. Not Buffy fans finest hour if you ask me. Also, no I haven't always agreed with the staffs decisions on everything. Still I'm here. Which says a lot. Some others really don't like how they or other have been treated here. Each to their own.
Buffy fans are the best.
