yellowcrayon agrees: Some Catholics do fish on Fri all year round. Eastern Orthodox do no meat (at least) on Wed and Fri, and no meat and dairy during Lent.

By 'we' I meant my family. There are friends of my mom's who abstain on Fridays all year, too, but we've never done that. I didn't even do it at all till I was 12 or 13, something like that. Some of the Church's guidelines have relaxed in recent years, my mom grew up in a parish where Mass was given in Latin. Even my own parish, while still pretty traditional, has become a little more contemporary with the times.....more singing than there used to be. They sing the responses now, they used to just speak them when I was growing up.

Hey people, I just realized, I think this whole lent thingy also has some impact on Russia. One of the oldest holidays there is on the last Sunday in February/first Sunday in March, and, surprise, there you eat blini (Russian version of pancakes).

I didn't have pancakes this year, I havent for quite a few years. I do remember having them when I was younger (brought up Catholic). I'm not a massive fan of pancakes, I like them but I have to be in the mood. Anyway one year I obviously wasn't in the mood, I don't remember how old I was, but we had left over pancakes and pikelets on Ash Wednesday. We came home from church with a bunch of other family friends and I decided to use a pancake to get the damn ash crap off my head 😛
