Have you had one, do you have one now? Proper paper and pen ones I mean rather than email

I'm looking into it, as a hobby, just uk based, as stamps aren't cheap! Although I do write to a few international BBers occasionally!

(Also my little rebelling against technology with snail mail!)
 
I have a penpal in Australia and one in the US. I love it! It is so much fun to get a letter in the post. And sometimes sending each other gifts is quite fun as well.

Though sending a letter from Sweden to Australia takes about two months (the reverse about five weeks) so it feels properly like old fashioned letter writing when news are months late 😅

To the US it only takes a week or two.

Made me think of this:
My business partner's young daughter is always sent to camp in the summer. He wrote her a letter. It upset her because she couldn't read it. He wrote it in cursive and people under a certain age cannot read cursive.

So how do you all people write? Block letter or cursive? Do people even write in cursive anymore?
 
Cursive, here. Both in the letters I write and those I receive. But I’m a troglodyte in a cave, so…
 
I block print because my cursive is so terrible even I can't read it.

Cursive here too, and not particularly neat cursive at that!

I can scarcely remember how to write cursive. I don't know if I find it impressive or sad that the two female cave dwellers both write in cursive.
 
Most of the earlier stuff I wrote was in cursive. It was just the way things were done. It was taught, we learned and in spite of what some people said, it was quicker to write cursive. I never had a pen pal and I still don't know anyone in the pen that I would want to write to.
 
I had lots of penpals as a kid, pre email. Now I only write to one person and keep adding more and more things until it costs too much to send and then I dont send it 😆

My writing style is whatever is most comfortable at the time. I enjoy writing letters and notes, I always have. Probably why I am so attached to forums now 😂 I get overwhelmed by PMs though, so I do not like those much. Would prefer handwriting over emails if they were as cheap as emails.


For my religion stuff I do a lot of letter writing, thats cheap but no one writes back 🙁

One more thing: I'm afraid that my religion has this pen pal policy. Yes, I know it's silly. But I don't make the rules. 🙁

"When embarking on a new pen pal relationship, if one writer happens to be male and the other female, the man shall send the woman a cheque in the amount of $666. For the record, this is a one-time formality."

I love the notion of using that thing some folks call cursive writing, unfortunately when one starts a sentence it is correct to use a capital letter (not cursive) should you say you are going to use words in italics those words will not be cursive, should you want to use the shortened form of et cetera you would not use cursive writing etc: Should you write to a male it might be Mr. J. H. That is not cursive, so just send an e-mail. Considering all the poor spelling on these board, with joined up letters that are not neatly written how many letters would have the topics not understood?

Mind you writing on these boards has its failings as well, should you try to write the shortened version of et cetera in brackets you'd get a stupid smiley face instead 🙂 .

My bestie moved back to their home state about a year and half ago. They're big card (post and regular) kinda peep. So have sent more of those in that time than I did my whole life before! To be fair, we still text and call, though. So not strictly just a penpal.
 
I never had a penpal, but I remember when comic books and kids' magazines would have letters from people asking for one, a common thing. It also used to be common to see requests for people to write soldiers overseas. I have a friend who married a British penpal (she's American); the marriage lasted 10 years.

As for writing, I learned cursive as a child, but reverted to print in high school for some reason. I have wondered, now that it's no longer taught, how young people will write their signatures on legal documents. It seems like a print signature could be more easily forged.

Seems like a good pretense to demand our biometric data, which they're already pushing hard. One day it will be mandatory. For the "public interest" of course.
