What are your pet peeves? Don't lie. Everyone has them. I actually made this thread because I have recently experienced my worst pet peeve twice, in the same day!

For me, it is chewing. People chewing with their mouths open and chewing loudly and extremely obnoxiously. It drives me crazzzy.

My brother's girlfriend was just chewing Tortilla chips. She chews like a horse, it is awful. And I was trying to do my science homework and my answers prolly don't even make sense. And earlier in school, this girl was chewing gum so loudly in my ear. Grrrrrrr it was so annoying...I had a double (2 hour class) of that class too.

Hm... Double negatives. Use of the "word" "aint". When someone repeats something they said in sequence. When teachers make grammatical - or non-grammatical - errors.

^ To name a few. 😀

ain't is a legit word. One that I ennjoy very much.

In your first sentence, "word" should not have quotation marks around them. That's a grammatical error. ;)

Ain't no problems with double negatives! ;)
still on the grammar front "yous guys." The northerners make fun of us southerners for using "y'all" but at least y'all makes sense! "Yous" is not a word!

OhWow agrees: I agree with you 1000% XD
Which brings up another... over 100%.

Now I'm going to continue with my list
Glass half full/half empty analogy. It's half full if you poured liquid into it and filled it halfway. It's half empty if you poured half of it out. If you stumbled across it and it had liquid in it filled to the halfway point, you check for evidence it was poured or drunk or something, if it wasn't, it's half full. If it was, it's half empty. And before you tell me, I know... I'm being very technical here.

"do onto others as you'd have done to you." I despise that phrase. It doesn't take into account the fact that we all have different levels of preferred politeness. Something that's polite to me may be rude to you and something that's polite to you may be rude to me. This is a problem in two main ways. 1. The logic of the statement says Person A (you) should do x to Person B, and Person B will give x back to Person A. However, if you apply this logic using the other person in the situation as person A and you as person B (because they have a perspective too) if what they give is y (which you consider rude), you have to give them y back. Or else by the logic of the statement, you're saying you don't want them to give you what you ask for. However, because you've given them y back instead of x, you haven't asked for x. So you can be nice to them and give them what they want (y) or you can be rude and ask for what you want (x). Either way, applying the logic of the statement, they're very free not to give you x in return.
And 2. If you give Person B x because it's what you consider polite, it might be what they consider rude. Since the rule doesn't leave room for different levels of preferred politeness, you might not even know you've been rude... I bring this up because whenever I give my number 1 everyone says "you're thinking about it too much. Just use whatever x is (note, that's what you, as person A was giving to person B). So if you do that and disregard their preferred level of politeness, if they consider it rude, the rule tells you not to care. That's ridiculous IMO.
I remedy this by instead saying "treat everyone with the highest level of preferred politeness given in the situation." So if you enter a room and say "hey" and the person in the room says "why hello. And how are you today?" you are to drop the casual and go with "quite well, thank you. And you?" And likewise if someone were to come in the room and say "sup" and you say "hey" they're to go "how are you" instead of asking the question "sup" again.

Another grammar rule here, it's my favorite... if you live in America, the periods and commas always go INSIDE ending quotation marks. So if I was typing a sentence and it ended with a quotation, I would put the period inside the ending quotation mark like "so." And also if I'm typing something and I have a "quote in the middle of a sentence," the comma goes inside the ending quotation mark. This is only an American grammar rule but I think it makes the sentence look much neater.

When people say my name and then "never mind."

When people say they have something to tell me then say they can't.

When I say "oh I love this song" and someone insists on talking to me the entire way through it. I cannot give my full attention to you if I'm giving it to the song which I've just stated I love. This annoys me so much more when I say "I love this song" and then someone talks to me, and I listen and then my favorite part comes and I say "Ok, this is my favorite part" and I start singing because it's my favorite part and they think that means "speak louder."

When I spell my name for someone as they're writing it and they mis-spell it.

When teachers who have seen my name spelled correctly on my papers and their role the entire semester spell my name wrong on the last day. This happened to me today and it made me so mad.

And I think I'm going to stop now because I'm having WAY too much fun with this.

Aside from table manners in general, I suppose most of my pet peeves are language-related. As apparently most people here, I get a twitch in my eye when people use incorrect grammar and spelling, especially of the they're/their/there and who's/whose variety. Come on people, English is my second language and I know the difference! It's not that hard!!!

At the same time though I get really offended when people say that a certain dialect is "ungrammatical" or even "wrong". You can say it differs from the standard variety, but it is not wrong. Language is arbitrary, we decide what is correct usage and what is not, and if a dialect is spoken and understood by members of the same community, it is grammatical and therefore correct. And yes, that includes double negatives, "y'all", "youse", "yiz", "I been goin'", "I'm after doing that" and the omission of the adverbial suffix -ly in some American dialects.

I also really hate gender stereotyping, especially when people say stuff like "that's not very ladylike" or "don't be such a girl" or "boys don't cry" to little children.

And last but not least (although this will make sense only to the German speakers here), I find the discussion about the correct way to tell the time incredibly wearisome. (In short, there are two ways to do it, one is pretty much a literal translation of the English way, while the other is always oriented at the next hour. So instead of saying "quarter past one", they say "quarter of two" and instead of "quarter to two" they say "three quarters of two". Sorry, I don't think I can explain it better.) So basically we have to perfectly legitimate systems, one's more common in the Northern/Northwestern part of Germany and the other is used in the East and in the South. I grew up with the first one, but then moved to a region where they have the second one; it took a bit of getting used to but now I can switch between the two pretty easily. But I swear, every single party I went to in my time in Leipzig there would be the discussion about which way was more logical ("The English use it too! Ours is better!" - "But it doesn't make sense! Look, the clock is a cake..." - "BUT TIME IS NOT A CAKE!") and I. Am. Sick of it. And they were all reading linguistics, so they should know about the arbitrariness of language.

coming from NRW and having spent lots of time chatting online with Bavarians, I know the last paragraph only too well, lol!

Whoa, seriously? So that's done on purpose? Every time I see punctuation put inside the quotation marks, I get annoyed reading it because it looks so wrong to me. After all, the punctuation marks should structure the overarching sentence, not the quote, so they should go outside the q.m. to be logical. You crazy 'mericans. 😛

Funny though that you and I not only are pet peeved about such a petty thing, but actually manage to be on opposing ends of it. :lmao:

LOL I actually remember that in school they taught us that "quotes are the most polite of all punctuation marks."
Another one I thought of. Pronouncing the word "naked" "nekkid" isn't actually a southern dialect thing. I can speak in a southern accent and still say "naked" I hear people do it all the time. "Naked" is a word. "Nekkid" is not. Learn to speak please. That drives me up the wall insane

I hate when people say nekkid!
One of mine is swearing around children. I was in the supermarket this evening and a Maori lady was swearing at her child like a drunken sailor!. Calling the child the 'c' word in front of other customers, I was disgusted, but thats what they're really like.

A funny story though about language around kids, a woman's son was playing around the store and she grabbed him by the hand and said "you know, you're acting like a real son of a bitch!". I laughed and I laughed.

Yes!!! My son is 9 years old and he's only heard me say "damn" twice. :)

Oh yea! My brother and his girlfriend swear around my niece all the time.

One of mine is parents telling me to not swear in front of their children. It is not my job to censor myself and it is not my job to know what you what your child to say and not say. It is not my job to teach your child how to speak properly. That is your job as a parent. If you don't want your child to say a word you just heard me say. Tell your child not to say that word. Don't tell ME not to say it. I'm not your kid. And you have absolutely no right to tell me what words I can and cannot say.

NOTE: when people do that to me, I yell at them in as many obscenities as I can pull out.

Oh Zobothehobo, you seem like such a sweetie.... but... I'm one of those parents who do tell others not to swear in front of my son, and (in the context of being a family law attorney), to not swear in front of their children.

You know what they say.... "Strong Words, Weak Mind." 😉

I don't like when people cuss in front of ME, let alone my children. I will say something about it, too. :)

Well no offense, but if you were ever around my kids and kept using words like that around them, after I'd politely asked you not to, you'd probably end up on the floor.

I cuss in front of my kids now and then. I try not to curse much anymore, 'cause I realize that it doesn't sound very classy at all. I'm not super anal about them not hearing those words, but it bugs the hell out of me when people around them don't even try to watch their language, or do it on purpose because it's "not my job" to watch your language in front of someone else's kids. Words like 'damn' and 'ass' don't really bother me, but I definitely don't want my kids hearing words like the c word or the f word.
One time we went out to eat with some of my husband's friends, and one of the guys kept on using the f word, even after we had nicely asked him to be careful 'cause of "little ears". He insisted that it wasn't his job to watch his language either... We both took it as not only a slap in the face towards us, but highly disgusting to talk that way around kids, ours or not. We stopped hanging out with him for a while, and he finally got the point.

Sorry, rant over.

Other things that are pet peeves? People chewing with their mouth open, or being really messy when they eat and not wiping food off their chin/cheeks when they eat. This pet peeve makes my life a living hell, having kids in my house. LMAO

I also can't take it when people scrape their teeth across silverware when eating. It's worse than nails on a chalkboard to me.

I try to watch my language generally because I used to curse WAY too much. But occasionally I let one slip... if I was with the person and child, I'd apologize and watch myself but a stranger, no.

Any time I even think about nail on a chalkboard I cringe...I just did when I read it

People leaving pens open. Everywhere I go and I see an open pen, I have to close it. And I complain about that to people all the time. I can't see open pens!!!

I'm the same way, except with cabinet doors. I don't like my pantry doors or kitchen cabinets to be left open.

Can't rep you again, but oh my God! We're so alike! Same with me about the cabinets doors.

I'm a vegetarian. So my pet peeves are:

1. You're a vegetarian.... do you eat fish or chicken? (Last time I checked fish and chicken were not fruits, vegetables, or grains)

2. How do you get your protein? (How many people do you know who suffer from protein deficiency?)

And one more....

Smokers!! Why is it ok for them to throw their butts EVERYWHERE? Why????? 😡

When poeple half close a door. I despise that... and if I can't fully shut it for some reason, I twitch. legit.

Also it bugs the hell out of me to be in a room that is "too clean" for an extended period of time. A little mess is nessecary for me to feel sane.

Same here. I tell my sister to close the door and she only shuts it halfway. Then I have to get upWTH!

When people are late. I hate it so much. I always, always try to be punctual, and if I'm not going to be, I always let people know beforehand.

It's rude, and arrogant. Why do people think they have a right to waste my time? I have certain friends that are always late, and it drives me insane.

Yup. My friend takes forever to get ready..and he's a guy.
People who spell "cool" "kool."

If you're reading this, Krystle, that applies to you.

Actually, any intentional misspelling to try and be "kool" (I twitched writing that) gets on my nerves. I'm a grammar nazi anyway, are you trying to make me flip?

That, and Kwik. There's a shop called Kwik Save, and it does my nut in.
Bad breath. Number one peeve. I get homicidal thoughts when people come next to me with their obnoxious (special emphasis on the "noxious") breath.

You haven't heard of mouthwash, you *(expletive deleted)*!!?? They make Tic Tacs for a REASON!! Colgate is calling your name you douchbag!!! Scope......it's what's for dinner!!

Also.....reality shows. A crime against the senses, and nature itself.

"Dancing With The Stars" my ASS! There are never any actual "stars" on that program. Paul McCartney's gold-digging second wife? The Palin kid? Sorry, that just doesn't cut it!
