(April 10) - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has a favor to ask of Pet Shop Boys -- they want the band to change its name.
PETA has asked that they rename themselves Rescue Shelter Boys to highlight how terrible the organization believes pet shops to be.

Are you KIDDING ME?! I mean, I'm as much for animals rights as the next person, but did PETA really think they'd change the name of thier band?

What, should Skinny Puppy change theirs too???

Haha, I saw this yesterday. What a laugh.

Obviously animal rights is a good thing, but come on. 😛

I wanna quote..."OH COME THE HECK ON!"

PETA has gone too far. I mean wtf? Get a grip. I love animals too, but this...What's next?

"Deaf Leopard, please change your name to Hearing Leopard, or just Leopard. It's not nice to make the poor creature deaf."

/me dies of her own sarcasm

I second NIX's lol. :P Love the band Def Leppard.
OK. First of all, PETA does NOT kill Animals. I am an animal rights activist, and even though I don't support PETA, I think that people who believe this PETA kills animals stuff are just being stupid. OBVIOUSLY they euthanize a lot of animals because they RESCUE a lot of animals.

Back on topic. PETA makes me angry and it makes it hard to be an animal rights activist because everyone associates us with crazy, immature, and rude PETA folk who are doing nothing more than embarrassing themselves. It's rather annoying because whether they realize it or not, they are representing a lot of us and we don't wanna be thought of as immature idiots. So basically I try to ignore it when they do something stupid and stick with the other organizations I'm a part of.

Pussycat Dolls - Cats aren't dolls - Please change.

Resin Dogs - Ingestion of glues or varnishes can prove fatal to dogs. - Please change.

Animal Collective - Stop collecting animals. It's wrong. - please change.

Adam and the Ants - Adam should return said ants to where he found them.

And that's how you do sarcasm. 🙂 I do respect Peta though.

Um. Do you see the inherent contradiction here? Does PETA kill animals or not? Euthanizing is still killing, hon.

You know what I mean. Why do people do that?
They don't kill animals in the way that that person is suggesting.
They humanely euthanize them because there really isn't anything else they can do.

^ Yeah, it's not like PETA are shooting the animals in the face.

(I would like to state here and now, that my status is not animal cruelty, I am punching a metaphorical cat in the head, thank you very much)

The paper where True got that story years ago noted that an autopsy on one of the dogs noted that it was healthy before it was killed.

Let me say it again: It was HEALTHY before it was killed.

For a group that professes to love animals, why can't it find homes for all of those in its care? Local animal shelters do a much better job on a budget that is many times less than PETA's.

And it's gotten worse over the years, not better.

HW: I think you'd agree that animal welfare is something we ALL can agree on...find unwanted animals loving homes, make sure they're not mistreated, make sure they're fixed, etc.

(For the record: I have 2 cats at home.)

Tons and Tons of healthy animals are euthanized each year by plenty of shelters everywhere.
PETA rescues a lot of animals, and it's impossible that they will find homes for all of them. It's just the way it goes and although I don't support them, I also know that they aren't killing animals for no reason.

I get that, but the average shelter places a lot more animals than they have to euthanize. It's as if PETA isn't even trying. Even the one in the organization's backyard does a better job with a fraction of the money PETA raises.

I've made my points...and you have done the same...how about we chalk this up to "let's agree to disagree"? 'Cause I don't think we want this thread to degenerate into a multi-page flame fest.

And, just for the record...to bring it back to what the OP said...sorry, but PETA's request to the Pet Shop Boys to "please change your name" should be laughed out of the room.

The thing that annoys me with PETA is the double standard it takes on hunters who cull over populated heards, much like they euthanize cats and the like.

I understand we are talking domesticated animals with PETA, and their culling the stray heard with the hot shot is what scientists call painless and it serves a point. Why does PETA rails against hunters and their "butchery' doing the same thing in the wild, but at the same time feeding people?

I further understand that hunting is not always a clean kill, but I imagine it's no less horrible to the animal than it being hamstrung and ate alive by whatever beastie might elsewhile be doing the deed. At least mankind worries about its suffering and an ethical hunter will make sure its dead before he starts quartering it. A mountain lion/wolf/any other predator in the natural world won't make that distinction.

Like so many other organizations, to me PETA exists in a vacume of good intent and a hopefully achievable nirvana that can only come about by changing the way we simply are.
I don't like their odds and if they took a long hard look at themselves...short of killing off humanity so it can not take notice of how cruel true wild life is, their goal is unachievable untill there truelly is a Dr. Doolittle.

What also bothers me is that some PETA folks are reported to state that humanity and it's keeping of pets are the problem instead of considering what further troubles would arise if everyone sudenly let their pets go feral.

Its this kind of confused good intentions that cause problems or lead to people making fun of the orginization for trying to change the diverse mechanic of humanity to their pipe dream mission statement when they ask bands to change their names. They simply can't see that what it is, is simply what it is.

I'm all for animal kindness and wildlife preservation and whatnot, but their ways just don't seem natural to me, or make that much sense.

Maybe I've been too influenced by the vocal bad apples in their group, I'm just tired of some of them screaming killer at hunters and non- vegans.

Next time one of them euthanizes a cat I hope they go circle of life on it and eat it afterwards, otherwise they should feed it to a starving polar bear somewhere, or something equally nonsensical.

Agree about the hunters. PETA goes about things in entirely the wrong way

I hate the idea of pets for this very reason.

You're justifying the killing of animals because 'its impossible to find homes'.

Animals did not evolve on this planet just so humans could inject them with poison.

Animals should be allowed to roam free.

A responsible pet owner spays or neuters their pet, or keeps its amourous intentions on a short leash (course some in Peta say thats cruel and unusual also) Snipping is offered free for rescue shelter pets where I live. (unless they are in it for the puppies in which case they need a breeders license.) Of course, my area doesn't have the problem with pet overpopulations many do.

The problem may be society is more irresponsible in todays times, or that the pet climate has gotten very safe since cave man days when animal comapnions as tools for hunting and for friendship began, and like us their population is way up. I think its a sign of the times, ill-prepared parents are popping out multi child families, and like owner like pet- so are their four legged kids with litters, because they are allowed to breed like wild animals; not domesticated ones. The level of care may be lacking.

I'd say thats a reason to 'hate' that kind of owner contributing to the kennel effect, not hate the idea of pets in general.

FFS - responsible pet owners stop an animal from doing what it has, essentially, been put on the earth, procreate.

What a great world we live in.

that something we agree on, I lagh at you, too.
FFS, yes. bastard litters and starvation being an unchecked foreseeable outcome of unprotected and key word here...unlimited doggy sex. Lots of puppies getting the hot shot is just one of the many undesirable after effects of that train-wreck of thought .

have you had many pets? They exist for alot more than humping, or maybe your the next Dr. doolittle or are tranfering too much of yourself onto them? Is that all you live for?

We have a boy dog, twig, but no berries. He still humps things now and then when the mood strikes him. Never wants for food, loves and is loved by our family, picture of health, sleeps like a dog and has a life I sometimes envy! he's snooring at my feet as I write this.

Would you release a tame dog like that into the wild?. 'FFS', thats a 'wonderful' world. Toby would be a snackwhich in an hour. I can tell you live in an urban area and watch too much TV. probably fancy yourself a zoologist.

Your still making me giggle ed. 🙂
