Article PETA Dubs Buffy Actress 'Jeffrey Dahmer'

Yay, I sense another veggie discussion approaching! Please. Can we... just not?

I'm a vegetarian. I support most PETA causes. I'm not against hunting because I can understand that in many cases wildlife populations have to be held in check in order to protect the environment. However, although I do agree with what most people said - that comparing hunters to serial killers is grossly exaggerated and does make the PETA people look like fundamentalist eejits and doesn't serve their purpose the least bit - I find people who enjoy killing animals for sport a bit twisted.

Most cows lead miserable lives. One of my best friends runs a 100,000 acre ranch with 1,000+ free range cows. They graze and lead wonderful lives... until it's time to gather them and sell them to the meat packing company. They are put into trucks and sent to a horrific place to get fat for the next 3-4 weeks, where they are inhumanely killed.
If your friend is sending them to a "horrible" place to get fat and then to be "inhumanely" killed, then your friend is doing it wrong and blame should not be placed on the consumer. There are other options.
And most cows don't live on 100,000 acre ranches. It simply is not profitable.
It must be profitable or people wouldnt do it.

BTW, PeTA put out a press statement, at no cost, and 18 months later we're talking about it on the Buffy Boards. Pretty smart, eh? 😉

There is no other way to "process" 1,000 cattle. He doesn't have a slaughterhouse on his property, and I don't know of any ranchers who do (except one in Virginia). I know plenty of people who raise a single cow on their land, and humanely shoot it in the head, and then have the butcher come out and turn it into meat products. There are so-called humane meats, but they are ridiculously expense and not available to most Americans. Most Americans purchase meat by price, not by the methods they are raised or killed. About 1%-2% of beef is organic (which doesn't mean humane). There is nothing nice about the meat industry. My friend isn't doing it wrong, it's really the only way to do it. And at least the cows are free ranging and happy for most of their life.

It is profitable for my friend because the owner of the ranch has had the property in his family for about 150 years. Unfortunately ranchers are no longer raising cattle because factory farm beef is so much cheaper; instead they are growing marijuana, or parceling and selling their ranches to marijuana growers. Marijuana is semi-legal in Humboldt County, California, and since most ranches generate their own electricity and water, and it is incredibly rural, they don't get caught growing.

If you still have question, check out this great film from the Springfield Meat Council:

You barbeque-wrecking, know-nothing know-it-all!
PETA are idiots that aren't even worth wasting a thought on. Yeah, compare someone to a serial killer, that really benefits the animals you so claim to care about (yet put down all the time) in any way, shape, or form. They're just attention seeking fools. ASPCA is the organization that actually cares about animals.

I'm going to say this once. If you truly believe eating meat is wrong then you want others to not eat meat to. The way to do that is NOT yell at them, tell them they're immoral, they're murders, or call them the names of really famous and horrible serial killers. That just pisses people off. So even if you agree with the stuff PETA says, their methods should be so awful they piss you off.

I'm a vegetarian, and I don't exactly agree with hunting (Though, I'm not anti-hunting, either; each to their own) but that is definitely a step too far. It's a little ridiculous comparing Eliza to a serial killer; for one, if she claims 'she has hunted' that doesn't mean it's a regular thing, she could have done it once, and if she was killing for meat, not just because she wanted to? Well then, that's not a huge deal. Besides, she's not the only person in the world who's hunted, hunts or will hunt in the future, PETA are simply dubbing her as such because she's famous. They're too extreme about everything, it really is ridiculous.

I'm against hunting and now lost all respect for this actress because of it. Though PETA is to shady a group to trust.

The fact that she hunts is actually a plus in my book.. she ain't got that many pluses as it is, but the fact that we could actually get our hunt on together is rather hot. Chicks with guns are hot.. chicks with rifles and in camo are ::swoon::

that's pretty impressive camo - look she blends right in to the background :)
I'm a kind-of-lapsed vegetarian (in that I tried giving up meat completely a couple of years ago, had a couple of skin problems a year or two back and found that having meat a couple of meals a week helped) but looked up PETA a month or two back. Their underlying principles are good, but I'm never quite sure about singling out people in the public eye for making the same life decisions as dozens of other people who aren't famous. Plus affordable cruelty-free men's toiletries are practically non-existent.

I don't know much about hunting in the US, but as long as hunters are eating at least some of what they kill then I don't have too much of a problem with that. I live in an area with a few pheasant shoots and used to have friends who had friends on an estate who used to let them have some of the birds that were left over- Marjorie had a freezer full of pheasants and used to curry them, casserole them, roast them...

LMAO those pigeons on the fence haven't even noticed she's a hunter 😛

PETA is disgusting. Always has been. Take a look at any one of their ads, their tactics, and it's full of sexism, fatphobia, ableism, you name it. It's awful. PETA isn't just too extreme- it does real harm in reinforcing bigoted cultural narratives. Even if you're for animal rights and all that, you don't have to support PETA to do it. It's really sad that they're the most visible organization, but there are plenty of others that don't resort to ignorant tactics to get their point across.

So yeah. I can't take PETA seriously at all with this news, and I shouldn't. Eliza is probably a fantastic person, and if she hunts deer from time to time, that's her business.

Scobro agrees: I have ne'er before heard of ableism before...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ableism

The ableist world-view is that the able-bodied are the norm in society, and that people who have disabilities must strive to become that norm. A disability is thus, inherently, a bad thing that must be overcome. The ableist worldview holds that disability is an error, a mistake, or a failing, rather than a simple consequence of human diversity.

This also includes those who are differently abled, and considering the number of ads PETA has about how going vegan=thin, being fat is disgusting and unacceptable, etc. it's ableist to believe that people are overweight simply because they eat too much (disregarding a body's natural state or possible medical conditions). It's also ableist to imply that all "overweight" people (in quotes because honestly, standards of measuring average weight change constantly) need to be "corrected", since that enforces only one viewpoint of a "healthy, able-bodied person" and condemns all others.

NO, I researched it after you said it.. but never knew it was 'real' before.

I remember when this happened... like practically 2 years ago (my math maybe off) it was right when dollhouse started. Its just ridiculous, I mean really PETA is just a bunch of annoying fanaticals. I just roll my eyes anytime anyone brings them up.

Ya know what.... I don't like hunting I really don't I hate it in fact because I feel too bad about the animals being killed. Its sad and I hate it. Yes I eat meat, but... only because I didn't have to look at it before it came wrapped up in the meat section at my local store lol. I couldn't look an animal in the eye or even look at it period and kill it also I tell my boyfriend (who does hunt) when he goes hunting he's not allowed to bring me any kind of dead animal because I wont touch it. If anything bring it already cut up and in packaging, don't tell me you killed it or You will sleep on the couch lol. However I don't hold grudges toward people who do hunt... Peta gets on my nerves. So what she hunts? As long as she eats what she kills it doesn't matter right? She's feeding her family. Its nature.

Eating meat is wrong, even if someone from the Buffyverse does it. Sorry. So Faith, hunt demons, not deer.

For me, if eating meat is wrong, so is eating fruits and vegetables. Whether you're eating fruits, vegetables or meat, you're still eating the dead flesh of a sentient being. So, you're screwed either way . . . unless you have no problems with starving.

For us to live, something has to die... it's a trade off. Deal with it. That's my philosophy.

As much as I love animals, there has to be some sort of logic applied here. If PETA thinks that the way that hunters kill game animals, and slaughter houses kill domestic livestock is cruel, they should take the time to observe how predators in the wild take their prey down. Personally, I see a bullet or an air hammer as being much more humane than being torn to pieces and literally eaten alive.
