True; if I ever choose to use my phone in the car at all, it is to use the maps app. It's mounted in the car when I'm doing that, and is also incidentally Bluetoothed to the car as well so that I can answer it if needed.

It appears that there is much said about the parents being at fault, I think it is the fault of those mega rich owners of those social media sites.

One thing that the UK has seen is an uptick in the use of VPNs. Which is hardly surprising; even the bigger companies who are supposed to be collecting highly sensitive personal data have shown that they cannot be trusted to maintain the security of any personal data.
 
Tech is dangerous if used incorrectly or without any form of savy, hell it's dangerous with savy!! However, I believe it's down to the parents and the kind of relationship they have with thier child and how old that child is mentally and physically. With Abbs I've always tried my best to control as much as I am physically able as far as social media goes. She currently still have no instagram, no interest in Facebook other than using messenger to keep in contact with friends, only just installed snapchat last week and has no use for forums. But, I can't as a parent control what happens outside so at school for example. It doesn't matter what rules schools put in place if they want to bring devices to school they will. Unfortunately YouTube is just as bad as my Abbs found out in year 7 at the bus stop she was shown a horrific rl video 🙁 traumatised her for a week or 2.... I think all you can do is educate and monitor if possible along with time limits at home.

It feels so…depressing reading something like this. She’s basically acting like it’s some sort of “gotcha” to all the “haters” that she peddles smut to pedophiles. If people are lining up to get pictures of you while nude literally the second you turn 18….thats really not the kind of “client base” you want to brag about.

I think the problem with social media and things like Only Fans is that it is has propagated this mindset and society where this sort of behavior is somehow seen as good or something to be proud of. I think of things like Belle Delphine, that girl who sold her bathwater to horn dogs and then up and vanished when she made her millions.

Is it lucrative? Sure. Is it something that is psychologically healthy? Absolutely not. You’re basically reducing yourself to the lowest possible form of entertainment all for a quick buck

Especially as the photos will have been taken before she was 18. The photos will have had to be ready for release the second she was 18. Which, I think, actually makes what she is doing illegal.
 
On the topic of children not being allowed phones… I get it.

But also growing up in the era of the internet as the Wild West with very few restrictions for anyone… I was 12 in AOL chat rooms. I was in middle and high school when MySpace was popular and Facebook took over in college. The difference is… I had to wait 20 minutes for a page to load and I got to sign in and log out nightly.

These kids have it nonstop. The bullying is nonstop sometimes. People have grown accustomed to being mean by default on socials for clout and laughs. And now we have children growing up thinking 1m followers is a lifetime goal.

So yea, it is a parents responsibility to make sure they understand how to responsibly use the internet, but it’s also government responsibility to keep kids safe. And they’re being harmed mentally, emotionally and sometimes even physically due to the internet.

But it’s a complex issue. Enforcement means giving data that we don’t want to give as adults to a database online. But our data is farmed online anyway. There’s no great answer here. But as a former kid who would lie to sneak past age requirements to enter chat rooms at the turn of the millennium.. I know it’s way too easy for kids to enter online spaces they should not be participating in as our structure is set right now for preventing kids from entering those spaces.

I wonder how it'll work with fanfic sites, will the more explicit fics now be behind a pay wall or some other verification page?

I definitely clicked the I'm over 18 box when I definitely was not!

Dreamwidth, with regards to one ruling, for a US state, said that they couldn't handle the sort of stuff that would be needed for age verification, so they were blanket banning all IPs from that state. However, they also stated that IP bans may hit those not from that state, and that they recommended those who were affected that shouldn't be use a VPN, explicitly stating that wasn't an advised method for people in that state to get around it. I think a lot of sites are going to end up following similar; they can't afford to enforce the rules and can't afford to break them, so will "ban" regions. Leading to an increase in VPN popularity and organisations moving their registered addresses to nations that frankly don't care about complying with such rules.
 
Well I look at it this way, we did just fine and survived before they were invented so if they were to disappear tomorrow we would all still be fine.....and maybe a little better off. The only thing we would have to deal with is all the kids that would go through DT's when they can't have them anymore. It would be like taking their pacifier away, which is pretty much what it is. Oh, I can just hear the crying and whining now!!! How many times have you seen a parent give their kid their phone to play with because him or her were being unruly or just because they didn't want to deal with them anymore?

Glad i am not on social media. not giving biometrics out. Bad enough the TSA takes it but for entertainment? No. Some portion of human kind will always take the easy way out. Those are the ones who will biometrically unlock devices for toddlers if the govt requires it. There is no way to stop it other than adults policing their own kids.

Meanwhile the rest of us will have to do more bs to live our adult lives. I really am tired of invasion of privacy (more elimination of) masquerading as "protection of minors" - ridiculous since society allows so many mistreatments of kids and other helpless people that they don't bother policing bc the perpetrators are "upstanding citizens". When they stop arresting teens for 'prostitution' and start arresting doctor and lawyer Johns for pedophilia; they may have some credibility,

Some sites make you verify to view medical sites bc the word breast (for example) is in it - the definition of adult content varies and there are sites that have had to fight such restrictions because some algorithim decided they were 'adult' in error.

This is only going to get worse as things depend more on AIs and less on human beings.

And the idea of giving even more personal data to companies that have already proven incapable of keeping what they have got secure is less than appealing to say the least. Supposedly, they have guaranteed there will not be any data breaches. I guess that until now they were simply not trying hard enough?

This is all very troubling.
I never use Reddit but I can see it going the way of 23 and Me, a company that generated genetic profiles and was suspected of selling their list to insurance companies who would look at the expected lifespan and deny coverage to individuals who were pronounced to be risks. If Persona does not show any income stream from Reddit, then they are selling your biometric data. No company survives without an income stream.

We raise children to get along with other people and to an extent this is good, but we also teach children to accept other people's opinion of them, which is bad. Our mixed messages to children are partly from our desire to maintain control and partly because we teach children to believe in a number of damaging things:

1. Popularity is the highest goal you can achieve
2. You need to justify your life to other people
3. Mistakes are always bad
4. You must always say yes to any request for help even from those who exploit you
5. Setting boundaries for what kind of treatment you will accept from others is bad
6. You should apologise for existing
7. You must always avoid confrontation even when you are right
8. Any thoughts of sexuality are bad and must be suppressed

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but we are raising children to live in fear of judgement whether just or unjust. We should raise children to have bulletproof minds that cannot be damaged by the things I have listed or any other items you could add to that list. Trying to raise a child to be "well adjusted" in spite of the delusions we feed them is a lost cause pretty much by definition.

I was involved in breast cancer research from 1993 to 1995. The idea that someone under 18 would be prevented from accessing a description of our work because it mentions "breast" (which was in advanced X-ray sensors) is the kind of lunacy we can expect when politics enters the picture.

It wont be as simple as a check box, they are talking biometrics, you'll need to upload face, fingerprint or voice identifications to access the targeted sites. Everyone will need access to a smartphone with the right technology to get access at all. Another one of those slippery slopes that people arn't worried about until its already done. Its already in place for verification on some sites and certainly on 18+ apps.

Its not set in stone yet - we can only wait and see how it will be enforced in Australia. A VPN isnt going to get around biometric requirements if sites decide to implement them. Its all very half baked right now, but it is just the start of these sorts of laws.

I'd assume smaller sites that dont require log in or arnt strictly "social media" might avoid the ban, but it does seem that eventually ALL internet access will be individualized and tracked. That will just spawn further underground sites and spaces that are likely going to be more appealing and dangerous for some users. Let alone the hacking risk.

Currently, as sites are only implementing the requirements based on IP addresses, because they don't want to do anything if they aren't legally required to do so, and almost everywhere they aren't required to do this, VPNs are getting around it. Biometrics may affect the UK and Australia, for example, but not someone visiting from elsewhere, and VPNs do fix that.

An example of where the cure is going to be far more dangerous than the problem. These databases will be hacked, that is guaranteed, and that information will get out and be used to destroy people's lives, just through identity theft, because this is going to make identity theft magnitudes easier. And that doesn't count all the sites who will deliberately make money from the information, even though that is unlikely to be legal.

It’s also worth noting most do it for legal purposes. Like when Steam asks for your birthdate to view M rated games. Because if they didn’t, some parent would sue for their kid looking at inappropriate imagery.

Legally, on paper, the person said they were 18 so no responsibility on the part of the company for whatever they saw or heard
