Phones and children's addiction (and Tiktok, Instagram...)

The ban starts tomorrow. News said there has been an uprise of aps that are exempt from the ban. Youtube has said it will be more dangerous for kids now as they can access the site without an account, rather than being limited by parental controls on an account. Ministers are perplexed.

Funny timing, just in time for summer school holidays hahaha. Considering how covid went for parents, I cant see how they are going to keep their kids off these alternate sites over the summer (which has already been off to a record hot start).

Fortunately, the kids have been given plenty of time to install VPNs so that they can get around the ban.

I wonder if it will make a difference, not to the current teenagers but to the kids that are currently too young for phones. In a decade a lot can change, but if this ban stays, will the babies of today have a better chance of not being on social media and all that goes with it.

It might work out better, but our aim should not be to shield children from everything they don't like, it should be to raise resilient children. Children who will look at other peoples' opinions and make an objective assessment of whether to accept these opinions or not. Us old crocs from the television generation (I think "boomer" misses the point of who we are) remember our parents telling us;

"Sticks and stones may break our bones but names will never hurt me".

Both our parents and our peers believed in this and people complaining about names they were called were thought of as weak minds.

But now, names are closely examined and guarded and people are penalized for using any unapproved names. Children are taught that people who disagree with them are doing violence to their point of view. I first heard this in university from a communist who was defending his point of view and I thought it was an odd response to someone who disagreed with him but it is currently used as an excuse for violent retaliation. Children are sponges. They will absorb all ambient opinions and not differentiate between them so it is important for the parents to step in and instil modernist (and specifically NOT postmodernist) values.

There is no way to prevent people from getting information. The best thing to do is instill values that will negate any of the damage from this information.

What's your thoughts about the addiction of young children (even 2 years old children 😓) about phones ?
I don't have children, so perhaps my opinion is invalid, but I support not allowing kids under the age of 16 to use Instagram, Snapchat, etc. There are many ways they can be exploited on there, especially young girls.

I also completely support not allowing kids to use phones in the classroom.

When I worked at a restaurant, I was continuously shocked by how many parents would come in and bring their small children and just give them a tablet to entertain them, then get get drunk and not pay attention to their kids at all. What a wasted opportunity to teach them table manners...

Joan the Vampire Slayer Right, but kid these days are not reading fan fic. They're talking to strangers on snapchat...

And we were doing that in chat rooms, a/s/l was frequently lied about, making us not seem like 13 year olds. Of course because I live in the middle of nowhere, location was also lied about to make us seem cooler!

Of course, as young teens we found it hilarious, that these older guys invited us to private chat rooms and then told us how they would stalk or rape us.

The aim is not to shield children from things they don't like, but from things that can harm them. No amount of resilience is going to help against stalking and worse, and children are especially vulnerable to many things online, cyberbullying and more. Now, I think the way this is being done is stupid and won't work, but I understand the idea.

I go to the supermarket and in the trolley I see a parent who has given a phone or tablet to their 2 year old. Still kinda shocks me.

It's like when you go out for a meal, and see tables of people just all on their phones, no talking to each other.

Yes, agreed! Pretty sad.
Even when I go to the dances, there are always people on their phones. The question in my mind is, why did you come here and pay $15 to get in when you could read your phone in the comfort of your own home? It may look like a better idea than sitting and waiting for a guy to ask you to dance, but even the ones who get asked all the time do it. Some of them will dance with you when you ask, but they have to retrace back through the phone menu to do it.

What a lost opportunity to know your kids! I remember sitting at dinner and after TALKING TO MUM! When we watched limited TV together she would critique the messages and encourage me to do so as well. I learned discernment. I also spent time with mum not watching any TV.

Sad this is becoming rare. Instead of government rules, parents need to engage children. Talk to them. Play games with them. Monitor their online content AND duration. NOT let them have tablets during meals, homework or going out. I see people put 2 year olds!! on their phones so they can ignore their kids. Of course kids habituate to screens. That is what they are TAUGHT. Then they wonder why kids have no ability to entertain themselves or judge what they watch. Or why they dont know how to behave around others. Or how to be alone.

To try and protect those who are ill at ease, those who are being picked on, it is a common thought.
Many countries try to help those ill at ease, like Ukraine(?).
The leaders of many countries try to help other countries with regard to rising sea levels, extremes of the weather.
That is one of the things about being a decent human, to help those who could do with a bit of help.
