Question Political Spectrum

Also, where do you draw the line? Having a gun may increase your chance of being injured by it but so does owning a steak knife or a car. Should those be taken away? The constitution gives every American the right to own a gun. Denying that flies in the face of the foundation of the country.

A gun is a weapon, a car is not. A car wasn't designed as a weapon. It was designed as a means of transportation. A Gun is a weapon and that is what it was designed for. Equating the two is like a equating a gun to a blender. You could get hurt if you stick your hand in the blender, does that mean you should play with a blender? You can't equate a Gun and a Car.

And like Zobo said that ammendment was written a long time ago and doesn't have much bearing now. A lot of laws have had to be ammended over times as society progresses.

the second amendment means your right to bear arms is to protect you from the government.

And I still have that right.. including when and if the government decides to come and take it from me. Why dont you need protection from the government? Especially now with things such as the Patriot Act in place which robs us of due process that we are entitled to? We haven't outgrown anything. We still need the right as citizens.

This country was founded and came about as a result of the ordinary person being able to arm themselves, removing that right is also, in essence, removing ones own personal freedom. The right to bear arms has been around since the Roman Empire, Aristotle even called it a fundamental source of political power one which all should have. Thats the belief the country was founded on, so to remove our right to bear arms, is viewed by many as lessening the idea (at least to me) of a political system for the people and by the people.

The Declaration of Independence also supports the individual(s) rights to rise up and overthrow the government if it warrants (though the constitution ratified that saying in certain ways only) but it again points to personal power being the key (by the word key I do not mean dawn).

I can definitely see where you are coming from and you do make a good point.

I have to wonder though, do you think that a violent uprising (as unlikely as it is) would actually be halted because gun ownership was illegal? The very nature of revolution indicates that rebels, do not care for nor will they be impeded by, laws and regulations.

In the rebellion that began my own country's successful push for freedom, the lack of guns did nothing to quell the movement. And I'd wager the legality of gun ownership would do nothing to stop a revolution today, if it was desired.

It just strikes me as a primitive law. It made sense during the Roman Empire, even in 1791 when foreign power was ruling your nation but I don't know it applies to society today.

It would not be halted, because there will always be guns, but it would be diminished and easier to contain; and certainly it would be far less of an opposable force, or a movement that would demand attention.

Unrelated to previous comment:
The sad fact is, if you remove guns from law abiding citizens, you are only making things that much easier on the criminals. You are not talking about removing guns, but removing guns from responsible owners' possession.

The Constitution in no way addresses abortion. In fact, the Supreme Court weighed the right to privacy a higher right than the "right to life" in 1973.

But, I should no better than to debate this. I, too used to be a pro-life activist. It is next to impossible to change someone else's mind. Mine was an internal change that happened over time. So I guess I should bow out.
But the constitution does address it. Amendment 14 sec 1 "...nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law;"

My point was not to equate the two. My point was that something that can be (and is) used the proper way shouldnt be banned because it can be used the wrong way.

Totally unrelated to topic other than I remember when people talking about the x amendment et al.. but I thought this was very clever way to send a message to airport screeners..

Those are funny...my only fear in wearing one is that I would then be asked to remove it for the scans.

And the writers were really thinking about this specific issue when writing the 14th Amendment? Clearly the Supreme Court thought otherwise.

I assume not since women back then didnt have abortions because they wanted to get ahead in their career or because they were afraid to tell there daddy they had sex with their boyfriend.

Just out of interest, what do you think of abortion for other reasons? To give a few examples:
1. safety of the mother (wouldn't survive the birth)
2. mother got impregnated against her will (e.g. rape)
3. it is clear that the unborn child will be severely disabled, a normal life will under no circumstances be possible

I guess most people would agree with you that abortion for such selfish reasons you named is wrong (if you don't want to get pregnant, just make sure you don't get pregnant and use contraceptions), but those things I listed are the real issues imo.

--------------------
and to the whole debates of documents written in th 18th century still being valid or not:
You know that several American states have outlawed oral sex? Or that in one state (forgot which one) women are not allowed to get a new haircut without the permission of their husband? Of course we still abide to that today, because it's the law. [/sarcasm]

Well, the conversation has begun to get heated.

Let's take a deep breath. *breathes in* and exhale *breathes out*

Let's not fight. We're all friends-ish here. Let's just talk about our ideas, our values, and not get too heated about it. I respect your opinion, you respect mine, hold hands sing, songs together, etc, etc.

I thinks its incredibly offensive to make such a blanket statement about why women have abortions. There are many reasons why people have abortions you want to name the ones you think are ridiculous how about the more serious ones? Rape or incest! Should a woman have to keep the product of rape?? A woman should be allowed to do what she wants with her body. To make a judgment like that on why women have abortions is uncalled for. Who are you to judge them anyway?

@Scobro: it's a sexist joke. No question about it- it's offensive even if it was supposed to be funny. It's clearly meant to MOCK other people.

Incorrect!! that fact is wrong.. outlawed men preforming it.. women still can... I support the law!
(i dont know but it sounded good)

her fact wasnt wrong if its outlawed for men. It just wasn't the whole fact. But if its outlawed for men then clearly it is outlawed.

I'm Sorry if I misunderstood you. And I'm not being sarcastic lol I really did misunderstand you.

No worries.. I know you did.. I think its too easy to get in a heated 'debate' and then read everything with that tone of voice.. no worries. I am used to telling people that I am actually funnier than they think I am.

Oh please. Im not judging - according to Planned Parenthoods own statistics, less than 1% of abortions are because of rape, incest, or medical reasons. That means over 99% are because the baby is too inconvienient to have. I didnt "blanket" anything.

You are if you're assuming the reason is because they're inconvenient. Even if 99% aren't because of rape and incest. What if the woman isn't ready to have a child, and it has nothing to do with it being "inconvenient" you are making a blanket statement that every abortion is because they can't be bothered with a child. That sounds pretty judgmental to me. You have every right to your opinion but youre not just stating your opinion you're making judgmental statements.
