Poor Taste In Movies

I was just looking at this site:

and apparently, 6 out of the total biggest box office losers of all time were movies that I thoroughly enjoyed, including one that I have waited most of my life to see, and have thoroughly enjoyed (2 times so far, but don't tell my wife). So, here is my question. What movies have you liked that were either/or financial or artistic flops? (They don't necessarily be the ones listed on CNBC's list, just movies that ou liked)

Good question!
I rarely watch movies...if I do, they have to be highly recommended by people I really like and respect..otherwise I ignore them.

Which is a total mistake on my part, I realise, but I genuinely hate wasting my time, I like knowing that I'll like what I'm gonna watch, before I watch it.

So I don't really think I like any huge flops.

I love The Last Action Hero. It's campy and silly and almost nobody likes it.

Wow, John Carter made the list... that just came out.

Ah well, I have a lot of movies that I know aren't the best that I love anyway but one of the movies that I actually know was a big box office let-down and that I absolutely adore is (as I've mentioned before) "Southland tales" - start to finish I think it's sheer brilliance, I bought it as soon as I could and I never get tired of watcing it.

I really love SMG's ubercheesy "Simply Irresistable". LOL I think her chemistry with Sean Patrick Flannery was awesome and that movie is just cute.

I also really love the movie "Saving Silverman", which a lot of people laugh at when I tell them. LOL I can't help it; Jason Biggs and Steve Zahn crack me up. 🙂

And, just on the other end of the spectrum, everybody positively RAVED about "The English Patient" when it was released, but my wife and I positively hated it. It's one of the very few movies that I have ever seen that, if we hadn't been there with friends (some of the aforementioned ravers) we would have walked out before it was half shown.

I've got Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within on video from when it first came out and Sahara on DVD. I've also watched Cutthroat Island when its aired on TV. I enjoyed watching all of them. The other films on the list I've never seen.

To be honest I dont look into what's big on the Box Office. I'll go and watch a film if the trailer looks good or if some of my friends have given it a good review. If I like a film, I like it, if I dont, I dont 🙂

The Spirit. I didn't like Sin City at all but I love this movie, it was a flop though.
Brüno. I guess I'm in the minority on this but I think Brüno was way funnier than Borat.

I was actually very surprised to see soldier, and 13th Warrior on that list. I liked them so much I guess I thought everyone else did too.

I'm with you; I don't normally go off by what the box office says. I see movies based on MY tastes, not other people's.

Awh Sahara is on there! I haven't seen it in a while but I remember enjoying that!

Um, apart from that I'm not sure of other flops I like. If I remember rightly Scott Pilgrim only made back like half its budget but I adored that film. Like you guys I don't really bother with critics and box office and whatnot. I'll see a film if I fancy it regardless of what other people say. That being said though I think a lot of my favourite films did pretty well!

I haven't actually seen any of the films in the link in the OP. I don't go to the cinema much as it costs too much, but I generally don't find the massively hyped films to be that good in reality. I suppose an exception is Harry Potter but even then I think some of them were terribly done in terms of consistency.

I don't have bad taste in movies. If anyone think that the movies I like are bad they're the ones with bad taste. 😉 The same goes for that list. That a movie loses a lot of money doesn't mean that the movie is bad. Just that it didn't attract enough people to go watch it.

With that said I think most of us enjoy one or 100 bad movies. I enjoy the scorpion king, and even more so with The Rock's commentary, but in my mind there's no denying that it's a bad movie.

From the list in the opening post I enjoy Cutthroat Island.

I love movies with an intense passion. I should, seeing as I'm a film major 😉. Movies are all about emotion. If a film makes you feel something...then it has done it's job. Taste in anything is subjective, in my opinion. If someone has put their heart and soul into a film, chances are, it's good. It may seem contrived, stupid, or even pretentious to some people (key word = some) but if it has a profound effect on someone, or if it just makes someone laugh or cry, the filmmaker has done his or her job. When people start making crap films just to make loads of cash *cough* Michael Bay....well, that's unfortunate. Haha I mean some people love his films, so again, it's all subjective. I guess a good example of what I consider to be a crappy movie, is Pig Hunt. Everything about it is awful. The acting, writing, everything! I mean the guy who made it was just lazy. Now that was an awful movie. Yikes. I hope that isn't on anyone's list of favorites.

I get that. There's a bunch of films I enjoy but when I take a step back you can see it's a completely rubbish or ridiculously cheesy movie. But then you get the 'so bad it's good' kind of movie. I have a few I love but really couldn't say they're particularly brill from a critical POV!

There's no such thing as poor taste. I betcha by golly wow that there are tons of people who are fans of the movies mentioned. For example: me. I love Speed Racer. 😀

The late great Will Rogers was fond of saying that he never met a man he didn't like, and with a very few exceptions, I could say the same thing about movies. I may not be totally enthralled every time that I see a movie, but there's always some redeeming factor, a scene, a character, or just a single line, that can save a movie from being a total waste of my time. I've actually enjoyed movies like "They Might Be Giants," "Paint Your Wagon," and even total cheese balls like "The Killer Shrews," which is why I could never be a movie critic. I love 'em all.

But, dammit, "John Carter" is a very good movie, and in no way should be considered "bad," or a "flop."
