Problem with the Edit Button

When you post something and then try to post something else right underneath it (ie: without anyone else having posted in that thread since your last post) within a certain time period (I think it's 30 minutes), your new post will be added to your old one. It's a function of the board software. If you post after whatever the time period is, the software will see it as a separate post, and two will appear. The presence and absence of the edit button is a byproduct of this function. Of course, someone else who knows more than I do about this stuff could probably explain it better, and I'm sure they will if I've mucked it up!

The edit button should only not appear when users aren't allowed to edit their posts. And since we are allowed to edit our posts it should show up at all times.

EDIT: The edit button has also dissappeared for me in the first post of this thread.

Apparently all the edit buttons disappear here. Mine are gone too. I'll ask Buffy what's the what. It's only this forum, since all my other posts are still editable...if that's a word...edible, maybe?

EDIT: editing now, as the button appeared. I bet there's a timer function on this forum. I'll ask.

I know the edit button shows up right away and then shows up again later. There's a time when it is not editable.

This didn't use to happen here, and it has never happened at other forums of this type I have and still go to.

OK, I just tried to re-edit my post and I got a vBulletin message saying I could only edit for 5 minutes after the first post. There's your answer. You need to contact an administrator after 5 minutes.

EDIT: I PMed the administration with your concern, and once Buffy or Faith gets online, I'm sure they'll be able to give you a definative answer.

Somehow editing permissions were switched back on at some point. When I noticed it I switched it back to keep people from changing what they said in a thread and making posts that come after it not make sense anymore. So you can edit posts for 5 minutes.

I have to agree that this is really irritating, I'll have to post another post after my laft one in a thread now, while I could have just been editing it.. Well well, not my thing to decide, I know.

Posts made within....I think it's an hour....automatically merge together. As I said, if people go back and edit posts after a long time, it makes the comments others have posted not make sense all the time. This was how the board was for a long time - not sure how it got changed.

If people would like to have a discussion on this we are open to ideas - just negative repping me doesn't really accomplish anything.

I agree with you Buffy, allowing people to go back and edit posts could lead to other issues such as making a person's response look misconstrued and/or irrelevant.

If there are blatant issues that you need dealt with in your post, a moderator should be contacted 😀

There are plenty of things I am willing to tolerate from administrations at boards, no sigs, no avatars, having my posts deleted for no reason, having my posts edited to make me look like a dofus, being badmouthed behind my back, having them turn my online friends against me, but there is one thing I will never tolerate in a million years and that is not being allowed to edit my posts.

As I said, if people go back and edit posts after a long time, it makes the comments others have posted not make sense all the time. This was how the board was for a long time - not sure how it got changed.

There is this magical thing called quoting it solves that problem. Oh look I just did it and I didn't even hit the quote button. I copied and pasted the quoted material and filled in the code for quoting along with the poster's name. As for neg repping you, it says dissaprove and that is exactly what I wanted to say.

EDIT: This is all the "discussion" you are getting out of me. Neg Repped you again by the way. If you decide to stop the stupidity let me know.

Second, if someone needs something edited after that time, they can contact a moderator to do it for them.

Third, quoting does not solve the problem. That would require every post to be quoted every time someone posts, which is unecessary.

Perhaps you would care to say why exactly you need to go back and edit posts later? I'll glady put it back if someone can give a good reason for the need of it that outweighs the aforementioned problem. The other problem with going back and editing much later is that people who have already read your post will not know that you changed something, so they'll miss whatever it was that was changed.

I agree that there is a problem if people edit other things than spelling mistakes in posts when people have already aswered to their post. But I usually look through threads some hours or a day after I've written in them and I find that I have made mistakes or something like that. Or that I want to change things completely in a post that is at the end of a thread (so it wouldn't be that thread-problem or anything)..

Perhaps its not the most convienient way around things but if there something that needs editing contact a mod or something. And get used to reading what you post after you've posted it.

Well I just think I need to point out what Buffy already did...in that if you completely change the last post in a thread, and it's been a few days, two things won't happen.

1. Your 'new' post won't be recognized when people search for 'new posts' and therefore most people wouldn't even see it; and

2. People participating in the discussion who might be checking back won't re-read your 'new' post because they think they've already read what you had to say. They won't realize it's changed.
