The other day, I was in a bus. There were only two other people. One of them was black.
The bus doesn't stop all the time. It only stops when you push the button. And as it was at the time where there were not a lot of people who take the bus, the bus wasn't supposed to stop a lot. And yet, it stopped about 5 times without anyone steps off or in the bus.
And at a moment, the driver stops the bus in the middle of nowhere. The driver starts screaming at the black guy: "Off my bus, get off my bus!". I had no clue what was going on, and clearly, the guy had no clue either. And the driver shouted "It's been the fifth time you make me stop for nothing, now just get out of my bus!" and the guy says "But I didn't do it on purpose sir!" and the driver says "Not on purpose? 5 times not on purpose? Are you kidding me?"
The thing is, I've grown up in a district where people would make that kind of jokes all the time and lie about it, saying they didn't do anything, so I could easily recognize when someone lies. And the guys seemed honest. He said "I didn't do it on purpose, it was because of the position of my foot!" and the driver said "Your foot? You push the button with your foot? OUT OF MY BUS!"
And the guy said "I'm not going to get out of this bus, I'm in the middle of nowhere, I must arrive at....in 30 minutes and the next bus is in one hour, I won't get out if I didn't do anything!" so the driver said "I won't ride until you are out" and the guy said "But I DIDN'T DO IT ON PURPOSE, you can see how I sat if you want!". And they keep argue like that for about ten minutes. When they started calling each other racist, I decided to step in. I said to the black guy "show me how you sat" and he lead me to the end of the bus, and showed me. He actually had his feet on the opposite bench and his knee against the button. I said "Oh, I see. So yes, I believe it was not on purpose, but you realize you shouldn't put your feet there in the first place? I'll talk to the driver, see what I can do." So I go to the driver and say "I'm sorry sir, but I've looked how he sat and okay he shouldn't put his feet on the opposite bench but I do believe he didn't do it on purpose. I suggest that he takes now my place, so you can watch him with the mirors and if you see he does it again, then you kick him out. If he sits in my place, you can drive again and keep an eye at him, so you guys can stop fighting".
And the driver said "Yeah that's a good idea but I already called the cops, I wait for them to arrive now".
So the black guy was so pissed and disgusted that he said "You know what? You won you stupid racist! I'm off your bus, happy? Now you can drive."
And the driver said "No. I wait for the police."
And then the guy was embarked by the police.
That whole event kind of upset me, because it was like the more 'violent' of the events alike I had ever seen.
You have on one side the guy who messed up a bit, and on the other side the guy who immediately calls the police. The guy calls the driver a racist, saying "You make such a fuzz about it because I'm black".
And the driver said "It's you who are racist to make the assumption I am racist because things don't go the way you want".
And there I am, the carteron girl who think they are both wrong and a bit right.
The thing is, that's not the first time something like that happens.
I've seen too many times people saying "You are racist" for some reasons.
I mean, if someone insult someone else on it's culture, colour, it is racist.
But calling someone a racist for another reason is also a kind of racism, right?
I mean, saying to the person that she's racist is saying "You do that because I'm coloured and you are white. White people are racist". And that is a racist assumption.
I don't really know what my point is.
Oh, I didn't precise a thing. The driver was Flemish, and the black guy was more from Brussel, so it was a Dutch speaker versus a French speaker. And I think I was so upset because in Belgium, there is racism between Dutch speakers and French speakers, no matter what their colour is, but there is also the mutual racism between white people and coloured people. And in this fight, it was like the apogee, the white Dutch speaker against the black French speaker. And they were racist toward each other.
I was really torn about what I should think.
In the end, I went for "The guy shouldn't have put his feet on the bench, and the driver shouldn't have called the police for that".
And I keep wondering "Would the driver have called the cops if the guy was not black?" and also "Would the guy have called the driver a racist if the driver was, say Moroccan and not Flemish?"
Did you ever live something like that?
Were you ever called a racist while your actions weren't racist?
It's like racism leads to more racism, which leads to everyone being racist with each other.
