Scream 7 - 4/10

So very disappointed in this sequel. Zero story, zero characterisation, no memorable lines, no memorable characters. I literally laughed during some of the kills. The killers were weak, as was their "motivation". Zero meta movie commentary. Chad and Mindy stuck out like sore thumbs. And, worst of all, the film was boring. Definitely the weakest instalment in the franchise.

Scream 7 is a step up from 6 which was more style than substance and more predictable than 7. 7 didn’t need the shallow flashiness of scream 6. It’s definitely more low key and quiet but it’s not slow paced.
The killers threw me at first in a bad way but the more I thought about it the more I liked it. Again- not as predictable as scream 6 ghost face. And the mother using her son like she did was very on point/relevant for our culture. They threw me; actually had me thinking stu was somehow alive (an idea I hated originally) and warming up to the idea but it gave us twist on twist which I appreciate.
I also love referencing Tatum I just wish Sydney said something more to the effect that Tatum wasn’t a victim she was a fighter til the end.
And no memorable lines? “Past my prime? **** you.”- Sydney, Scream 7… it’s almost on par with “you forgot the first rule of sequels Jill- don’t **** with the original.”- Sydney, Scream 4

I agree with you that the characters weren’t great- even Tatum was meh. Her friends were beyond superficial & unmemorable. Chad and Mindy— even though I don’t really mind them in 7 bc if they have to be there for some reason at least it’s a practical reason as gales media team.. I thought he probably should’ve died in 6 but another reason 6 sucks- no major character deaths. 7 is guilty of that too. Not even Sydney’s new husband after getting stabbed in the heart -_- Overall though of course it could’ve been better but it also could’ve been worse imo

I gotta respectfully disagree, I love Scream 6, I think it's dynamic and fun and the characterisation of the Carpenter sisters is great. It also fully proved to me that the franchise is more than ready and capable of moving on from Sidney Prescott.

Eh, again, I disagree. The motive felt really thin to me, the over-zealous fans/para-social relationship angle had been done in Scream 5, I don't think the mother/son dynamic was interesting or used well and it didn't feel like a twist to me. Just lazy writing. Ethan Embry's character had zero characterisation or motivation and yet somehow was still the most obvious Ghostface giveaway in the franchise. The second he started talking about "John Smith" I was like "Oh, okay, he's one of the killers"!

Death of the Unicorn (2025) -3/10
By contrast this one was up its ass, dull, and way too try hard, with a good cast cruising through it. It’s very zany, if it hits you right you’ll probably love it, if not it will be one of the most tedious things ever.

If you enjoyed the first one you’re probably going to have a decent time with this follow up, if not I don’t think it will win over new fans. The new cast are good, especially Newton, SMG and Hatosy (probably too many characters). A solid sequel.

Although this film was heavy on style, and lite in substance, I still found it to be a lot of fun.

The whole car chase in the begining was cool. "When you hear something that sounds like a gunshot. Drive." 🤣

I think the editing let it down a little, otherwise it would be flawless. Even if you're not an Elvis fan, it's still worth seeing.

Paris, Texas (1984) - 7.7/10
Had very high hopes for this movie and had it on my must watch list for a very long time but it unfortunately was a major let down. While it is a very visually beautiful film, I absolutely could not stand Travis and the storyline in general.

I'm all for anti-heros and a good redemption arc but this just wasnt it. You would think after 4 years of wandering around that you would have had enough introspection to realize your past mistakes and heal from them, not repeat them.

I was so furious that Travis meddled in his son's great life, only to leave, yet again. I was left feeling like he clearly brought them back together for his own self gratification. I found him to be a most unsympathetic character and I think it ruined the movie for me.

Definitely not a masterpiece film for me.

A surprisingly well done short film.

City of God (2002) - 10/10
Finally got around to watching this for the first time, and just wow! This film is truly a masterpiece! A visceral experience where I felt like I was actually right there in the movie with the characters. It's so real, and raw. The cinematography was incredible, and lended to that real feel.

I'm breaking my own rule of never rating a film 10/10, for this one. Truly one of the best films ever made!

Project Hail Mary (2026) - 4/10
I wanted to see a space movie in IMAX because I never had before. Production design was amazing. I enjoyed the more science-y parts as well. However, the dialogues were soulless and all I saw was Hollywood cliches for an audience raised on internet memes. Ryan Gosling being all charismatic really took me out of the emotional experience too. :s I couldn't enjoy it.

Also, I think what Arrival (2016) did with alien linguistics was more interesting.

RIP Gene Hackman gone a year now, one of the few good things about this otherwise tedious film.

Fright Night (1985) - 7.5/10
Somehow I'd managed to have missed this one up till now, it ticks a lot of the horror comedy boxes for me.

The Bride! (2026) - 6/10
File this one under interesting failure. I at least respect that the film was going for something a bit different even if it didn't always pull it off. One thing I would have changed is to cut down on the characters, we didn't need the Cruz and Sarasguard detectives (felt like a nod to Mulder and Scully), or the mob guy.

@NotASlayer I haven't read the book but I am curious since I've read that it details the hard sci-fi aspects more.

@HowiMetdaSlayer I love Arrival. I think those two movies are similar in the sense that both of their protagonists are scientists who are the sole experts on their subject in the project team and there is alien linguistics issue in both movies. Arrival is more of a drama-mystery-scifi while Project Hail Mary is comedy-adventure-scifi. I think the latter would've been better as a miniseries rather than a movie. I didn't read the book but I felt that there were more details to explore, better characterizations to build. Though the movie isn't my cup of tea, many people seem to like it and it holds a high rating.

I went in completely blind as I heard this was good. It has great cinematography and Ryan gosling was very good but i was hoping for horror and it wasn’t. Kind of boring tbh so even the cinematography and gosling couldn’t save it for me.

expected more from this- not terrible but could’ve been much better

Demon Hunter (2005) - 5/10

The demon Asmodeus is trying to raise an army by impregnating all the eligible women in the world. The Machiavellian Cardinal White assigns half-breed demon hunter Jake Greyman and Sister Sarah Ryan is recruited to assist Jake in his effort to find and eliminate Asmodeus. The story is not all that easy to follow but it is better than the 4.3/10 that imdb gives it.

I don't tolerate gore very well - would you consider this an overly gory film? Would like to eventually watch it when I get the opportunity.

Annoyingly slow paced in some parts but not totally unwatchable.

This is such a beautiful film, both in message, and cinematography.

The Lathe of Heaven (1980) - 7.5/10
The film adaptation of Ursula K. Le Guin's (1971) novel of the same name. This one actually impressed me, and ended up being quite a bit better than I expected.

The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) - 6.5/10

The dance of Kali was stop motion animation at its finest. Her movements were so fluid and beautiful. Imagine all the work and time it took! Definitely my favourite scene from the film.

Ray Harryhausen is an absolute legend. May he rest in peace.
