@thetopher I was going to ask if anyone has seen the sequels! okay good to know, I may watch one tonight!

Ginger Snaps is one of my favorites, but I didn't care for the sequel(s)...not sure why as I can't even recall what happened. But I know others who liked it (but still prefer the first).

Well, the third one really isn't a sequel, its just the same two sisters/characters transposed back to Colonial times America; it's still about werewolves though.

I guess you could call it a 'prequel' at a stretch, still a fun watch though. 🙂
 
Peter Pan & Wendy (unrated)

Against my initial reservations I went to see this movie with my niece; she is a big Peter Pan fan from the storybook and the original animated story is one the first Disney movies she ever saw; she loves it.

This film actually made her cry.

Not big sobbing 'betrayal!' tears, more in a damp-eyed quiet understated way, realizing that Disney is slowly ruining their legacy from one year to the next. She hated what they did to Peter, Wendy, Hook, Tink and The Lost Boys (they're the diversity tribe now) and just the overall messages this story now sends.
For me it was a new low that somehow surpasses Mulan in terms of awfulness.
It's a dreary, tedious, cheap-looking film that pretty much side-lines Pan (as well as making him far worse judging by past actions) to have Wendy go through a (you guessed it) a 'girl-boss journey of discovery'TM .

So, who's ready for the Moana live-action re-make!
 
Back to the Outback (2021) - 9/10
Brilliant. Everything a fun, family animation is supposed to be. Disney who?

(Maddie and Zoe were my favorite characters)
 
Beverly Hills Cop 2 (1987) - 6.5/10

Solid and watchable sequel, but Dean Stockwell should have been the main villain instead of the bland European Playboy 😀
 
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) - 5/10
The first 40-so minutes had so much potential! Then it all fell apart. I started to wonder if the critics had been to harsh on the film (especially as a lover of the Jovovich franchise that everyone else hates) but turns out, it just took a bit to get to the shitty stuff...
 
Evil Dead Rise: 8/10

I felt very attached to the family, and I thought the horror was effective, the acting was very good especially the performance from the woman who plays the mother.
There were a few comedic moments which surprised me and I can't really tell if they were supposed to be funny or not, but a couple of other people in my theatre laughed when I did. It got so absurd in the end that it kind of wasn't scary anymore but that was only at the very end so it doesn't take much away from the film to me.
I haven't seen any of the other Evil Dead movies so I can't compare it to them but as a horror movie I liked it a lot.

Because you haven't seen the other movies is probably why those moments didn't work so well for you, but I agree pretty much with your review and glad you enjoyed it.
@Mr Trick Did you also laugh at a few points in the film?

Yeah there were a few laughs. Which is fine you need a few lighter moments.
Primal (2018) 4.5/10 Really dumb movie with Nicolas Cage and (I presume) Famke Janssen. A bunch of exotic and/or deadly animals and an insane government assassin are loose on an isolated ship, and the only person who can stop them is Cage's grumpy, sweaty poacher. There's some over-acting, some bad dialogue, some terrible CGI animals but overall its a diverting enough action thriller that uses its setting reasonable well. But I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again.

Boss Level (2021) 7/10 A Frank Grillo vehicle (if there is such a thing) which takes a clever, action-packed spin on the 'time loop- repeating day' idea. It's there to showcase his grizzled charm and does a good job of it. Also nice that the film subverts some of the action movie formula as Grillo's character goes through a host of motivations; from survival to vengeance to protectiveness to simply wanting to be a present father and husband...to then going all out to save the day. Basically a nice character journey with explosions. Naomi Watts, Michelle Yeoh and Mel Gibson guest star.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023) 8.5/10 An object lesson in not prejudging a thing before seeing it. I was dreading this given what I had heard previously from the production side in interviews but this was, in fact, a very fun movie. It didn't take itself too seriously, had some good action, comedy, meta-humour for the RPG nerds and no insufferable characters. A welcome relief so I've probably rated it higher than it warrants but what the hell.

I normally like the Affleck movies but can't really get interested in this. Maybe it's because I know so much about the story already. What was your level of knowledge prior to seeing the movie? What was so great about it? Besides the soundtrack.

Women Talking (2022) - 8/10
This was a quiet, reflective movie, about Mennonite women in an isolated community considering their options after their men seem to dismiss horrific crimes. It left me with a lot of questions, some of which I thought should have been cleared up in the movie. Still, it was well-acted and uses a light touch on the horror of the situation.

Soul Survivors (2002) - 2.5/10

What a pile of trash. Its like the Supernatural, goth version of Dawson's Creek and is every bit as dull as that sounds. A half decent cast mostly go through the motions. Wes Bentley is like a CW actor who was 5th choice to be in Lord of the Flies. I guess American Beauty was a bit of a fluke for him 😵 This was so written by a bloke too😉
Eliza not being the lead was a mistake too.

Christiane F: Wir Kinder Vom Bahnhof Zoo (1981)

One of my favourite films ever. I've seen it several times, and it always moves me. Great acting!! Intriguing, real story. Everytime I hear Bowie's "Station to Station" I think of this film.
 
Evil Dead Rise (2023) 6.5/10
This was...fine. I'm bias because I'm a massive fan of the original and to be this felt too derivative to feel truly fresh. The new setting was welcome, the family characters were relatable (the others should've just had 'body count' stenciled on their t-shirt) and there was a nice creepy factor from the deadites, plus tons of gore.

But there was not much humour, no sense of madness or things spiraling out of control/unreality (except for the elevator bit) and I could've done without the chainsaw callback which felt tacked on (I guess its nostalgia callback, along with a few of the iconic lines). I would've much preferred the writers taking more risks and trying new things beyond the improved FX. Overall it was way too predictable for me.

Still, I enjoyed it, would like to see more like it, hopefully they can move on from the formula a bit. It's way better than that 2013 re-make which doesn't need to exist at all.
