Spartacus (1960) - 9/10

Saw this at the cinema yesterday, its my first time watch. I go up and down on Kubrick films, but from the ones I've seen this is one of my faves. It says something that I normally hate this subgenre of film, yet was completely engrossed throughout.
 
Gladiator (Rewatched), 9/10: I think the movie was very well done and acted (particularly Commodus' actor, Joaquin Phoenix), despite historical inaccuracies and a sort of traditional/simplistic storyline.

Also, it was loosely based on the Stoic philosophy (for example, the virtues valued by Marcus Aurelius: wisdom, temperance, justice, courage are the four virtues of Stoicism); however I think the movie was subtly influenced by a Christian representation.
As a matter of fact, Maximus, Commodus and Marcus Aurelius are symbolically represented as Michael the archangel/Lucifer (also Jesus/Judas) and God the Father with the division: "high social classes" (Emperor family, senators etc.) metaphorically "Heaven" and "low social classes" (soldiers, gladiators, poor people etc.) metaphorically "Hell".

1) Marcus Aurelius= God the Father: The emperor, the father of Commodus (symbolically also Maximus) represented as an old man with white hair/beard (typical "God the father" like depiction).
2) Commodus= The "real Lucifer/Judas" (the betrayer/Judas, that wanted to become emperor for his ambitions/Lucifer) that hypocritically posed as benevolent to people, framed Maximus. However, he also had the role of "Michael the archangel" (The prince, the legitimate heir, the number 2 of Marcus Aureilus, the emperor -number 1/Michael the prince, the number 2 of God the Father - number 1).
3) Maximus=The real "Michael/Jesus" but he had also the role of Lucifer, the greatest general (the greatest angel), fallen into slavery (the fall of Lucifer) and became a gladiator that challenged the emperor. Maximus vs Commodus was a sort of Michael vs Lucifer.
The scene where Maximus is chained was symbolically based on the crucifixion of Jesus with Commodus that kiss him and stab him in the back (like Judas, that according to the tradition betrayed Jesus)
The roles of Michael/Lucifer in relation to Maximus and Commodus are also reversed, since Commodus (the "real Judas/Lucifer") posed as benevolent and "demonized" Maximus ("the real Jesus/Michael").
 
Blood and Honey - 2/10

When I first heard of it, I thought it would be interesting because Winnie the Pooh and Piglet become psychopathic murderers. This is a slasher film - more than a dozen people get offed and the story is that Christopher Robin goes off to college to become a doctor and while he is gone, the animals of the 100-Acre Forest run out of food and kill Eeyore for food. This changes them into what they have become and when Christopher returns and brings his girlfriend with him, she becomes the next victim. Other girls come in independently to a house they rented and one by one, they get killed. I actually dozed off during parts of the movie but I have no desire to go back to anything I missed. It gets 2/10 for the acting, which is pretty good but the rest of this is just bad.
 
Tonia (2022) - 6.5/10

The Exorcist (Director’s Cut) - 10/10

Saw this at the cinema last night, it’s lost none of its edge or shock factor. Still the greatest horror of all time.

The Believers (1987) - 6/10

Lair of the White Worm (1988) - 6.5/10
Typical wild and trippy Ken Russell film with a young Hugh Grant and Peter Capadi.
 
The day after tomorrow 7/10

Watched this last night with my boyfriend, for the first time in maybe 15 years. Even already knowing the story and the movie kinda being old, I must say it's still very gripping and exciting to watch. And I absolutely love those scenes when everything suddenly starts to freeze in seconds.

Really enjoyable low budget horror with a natural feel and a good cast which works well at building tension and dread

Evil Dead Rise D- or 2/10

These were all terrible! Halloween Kills was halfway decent but the second two were just mind numbing & not in a good way.

For me it's Brosnan, Craig and Moore. If I really had to narrow that down, I'd say Brosnan. Sadly, the franchise went too off-course with him and they lost their way. Die Another Day had real promise at the beginning, and then we got down to cheesy gadgets, the Madonna cameo, and cheesy lines that I actually remember made me cringe in the cinema. Brosnan could only work with the material he had.

In a sense, the franchise losing its way allowed them to reboot and we got Daniel Craig and course correction. So, silver lining.

Dalton wasn't bad, but he's neither here nor there with me. He and Lazenby are at the bottom of my list.

Fair play. I grew up on Moore and Brosnan so enjoy what they both brought even if the films were up and down.
Mr Trick- Moore was my introduction to Bond, so he'll always be a favourite. Watching his run now, the films are campy and the fight sequences aren't so great, but it all works for him.
 
I don't know why people keep slagging George Lazenby. He struck me as the only guy who had enough brute strength to get himself out of a tough situation. He played a big part in making "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" the good movie that it was. But Dudley Moore is my favourite Bond with Daniel Craig second.

Moore had the aplomb, the calmness and the sense of humour that I associate with a good Bond film. I have met people in the espionage business and the first thing you notice about them is that they appear calm, which helps them appear invisible. If you ever heard the old Dobie Gray song "I'm in with the in crowd", that is the impression these people leave me with - they have a secret frat boy society where only they know what's going on.

Wow! Not sure if Craig would be gutted or delighted in coming second to Moore.
