Monsters Uni- 8/10

I really enjoyed this. It'd probably be higher if I wasn't comparing it to Monsters Inc. But even with that comparison it was fun and had some really funny moments. It was a little slower to get going, but when it did, I loved it.
 
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) 6.5/10

An older Miyazaki animation and I don't think one of his best. I really like the dreamy/surreal moments, the lead character is full of charm, and there are some fun comic lines, and a thrilling score. But at times the story seems a bit mundled like they try to throw too many elements in at once, it is like Sci-Fi meets action, meets fairy tale. And because I was watching the English dubbed version (thanks Film4😡) I found that a bit distracting also. Still a fun watch, just not a classic Miyazaki.
 
Wispers of the Heart (1995) 8/10

Another from studio ghibli this time a teen drama about growing up and life choices. A schoolgirl is drawn to a boy who checks out the same books as her, and slowly deveolpments feelings for him, yet there is a lot of pressure from her family to study hard and to get into a good college. She becomes more confused and there are other complications with her friends alone the way. It is more character driven than some of animations, but the characters beautifully drawn. It is very funny for much of the first half, there is a lovely sense of place, but the characters are relastic and their problems ring true. The power of music is also wonderfully provoked, and there is a cute Cat also😛

The Quatermass and the Pit (1967) 7/10

Entertaining and camp Sci-Fi b-movie antics. There isn't much to the plot and the ending drags on a bit, but there are some good characters and sharp lines, and alien effects are nicely cheesy. Also there are some interesting themes to do with media control and politics.

I'm not a fan of Ryan Reynolds so maybe I should have just opted out of this one entirely - I wish I would've after suffering through most of it - because this movie was just... bad. The only thing that was remotely funny in it, is seeing the make up and costume design people try (very little) to "age up" Reynolds so that it might - at all - be concievable that he is the father of the girl (Elisabeth Harnois) about to marry Mike Erwin's character (both of these "kids" are obviously the same age as Reynolds so it looks really, really stupid. "Epilogue" scene of Harry Potter stupid.)
 
@Blaze I don't know there is a song called Hanging Tree at the end of the film? Is that what you are referring to?

Saw another animation today.

The Cat's Return (2002) 6/10

This was a follow-on to Wispers of the Heart, but it is a bit more aimed at kids. It doesn't have the that much of a story and lacks the character depth or power of that film, but there is still plenty of fun and imagation in it. It rips along at a good old pace, and is very watchable if nothing much else.

Is there! I haven't seen that movie, I was referring the the song The Hanging Tree in The Hunger Games series. It's been stuck in my head for the past few months, I couldn't resist.
 
Northwest Passage 9/10

(I'm not sure exactly when it started, but I find myself watching classic movies almost to the complete exclusion of what passes for contemporary entertainment these days)

Spencer Tracy as Major Rogers of Rogers' Rangers during the French & Indian War, with Robert Young and a young Walter Brennen as two of his Rangers. Great story, Highly recommended.

Will have to add this one to my list. Really like what I have seen of Tracy. BTW Northwest Passage was originally going to be the title of Twin Peaks. I think they went with the right title in the end😎

It's the theme from an old Gary Cooper western of the same name.

I hate it when someone names their song, book, movie, or whatever the same thing as a preexisting piece. It's like they're either too lazy to come up with their own name, or too dumb to realize that that name has already been used by someone else.

And as for it not being great, no, it isn't, but even less than great Gary Cooper beats anything currently being made.
 
King of Kings (1961) 6/10

Not the best Niclous Ray film. It should have been edited down, much of the dialouge is corny, and there are some bland characters and wooden performances. Bascially the material gets the best of him, but his direction, and visual storytelling is still pretty sound, and the music is emotive too.

Splash (1984) 8/10

A strong favourite of mine from that childhood, and while some elements have dated now, the heart of the story is still very moving. The casting is spot on with Tom Hanks at his physical/slapstick best, and yet convincing as an everyday guy just looking for love. John Candy and Eugene Levy offer great support, but Daryl Hannah is the real star, playing innocence, charm and sexuality to perfection. She says very little, but convernes so much. The jokes are pretty laugh out load throughout, but they support the story which is what movie comedy is supposed to do. A gem of a film.

It's quite a pity they never made a sequel... 🙄

The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) - 7/10
I definitely prefer this to the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes action movies and BBC's Sherlock.

Porco Rosso (1992) 7.5/10

Fun rif on the film noir genre, but with a talkin' Pig and boy is he funny! Nice doses of action, comedy and romance make up another fun animation.

White God (2015) 8/10

A deeply surpenseful, yet damning satire on the treatment of dogs in some easten european countries. It is kinda of like the Birds but for dogs. It is a thrilling, but also difficult film to watch in places, but there are charmy scenes also, you just need to overcome a lot to get to them. There are also some interesting sub-themes such as class. The young girl who is the only other character I really liked apart from the dogs is beautifully played by Zsofia Psotta who based on this subtle, yet powerful performance should have a bright career ahead.
 
Watched quite a few movies with my mom over Easter.

The imitation game: 9.5/10
Fantastic film. The right mixture of funny, sad, intelligent. Really, there isn't much bad to say about this movie, great performance by everyone. Seems faithful to the original story, although I must admit I don't know much about it beyond what I've read. The ending broke my heart a bit, the fact that such a brilliant man could suffer through such awful events.

Into the Woods: 6/10
This one was fun! Not by any means an oscar worthy film, but it was entertaining enough, and I love musical. Some parts made me laugh, I love how they make fun of the cliche's, especially the scene with the Prince brothers. And I might be slightly in love with Emily Blunt. Seriously, she's fantastic (and it has nothing to do with her being really good looking...nope, nothing 😛).

Unbroken: 9/10
Another good movie. I know the movie got some bad reviews, and again, I must admit I don't really know the story of the real Louie. But the movie for what it is was good. Yes, it's a 2h+ movie about torture and war, if that's not your thing you won't like this movie. As for Jack O'Connell, I am again bias, he's one of my favorite actor. But seriously, the guy is amazing, I've never seen a bad acting performance from him. He is truly excellent here.

Ladyhawke 10/10

One of my all time favorite movies, and quite likely the greatest fantasy movie ever made (Okay, that's just my opinion) For those who haven't seen it, Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer are lovers who have been cursed by a jealous man. Hauer is human by day. and a wolf by night. Pfeiffer is a woman by night and a hawk by day. Matthew Broderick is a thief who becomes the friend and confidante of the two. Fantastic story, well acted, and beautiful landscape.

And what's not to love about a giant black stallion named Goliath?
 
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 7/10

I enjoyed it enough. It's a decent feel good film and I needed some easy viewing to make me smile. Had a few good touching/sad moments also. Good acting from everyone involved. I'll definitely try the sequel at some point.
 
Fast and Furious 7 - 10/10

I don't even care, y'all can hate all over me all you want, I love these movies. I grew up with these movies. I was 16 when I saw the first one and now, at 30, they're over and I feel like I've lost something. The ending was beautiful and heartbreaking and such a perfect tribute to the late Paul Walker. The team did such a great job finishing the film after Paul's death, it was hard to spot the parts that were GCI/Paul's brothers, though there were one or two glaringly obvious parts.

It must have been so hard for these guys to continue and finish the film, but they should all be so damn proud of themselves. Can't wait to see it again. Definitely a fitting end.

I thought the end was kinda touching.. I just didnt really like the way "Walkers" face looked. It took me out of the moment briefly.. but otherwise a really good ending montage.
